Book excerpt: Alexis Piron was a significant figure in France in the first part of the eighteenth century and his twenty or so opéras-comiques include some of the finest works in the genre. The two plays included in this edition are among Piron’s best, and have in common the fact that they make use of pre-existing sources, although these are very different in kind, being, on the one hand, a short and obscure text made available by a group of writers working in the Netherlands but writing in French, and, on the other, one of the best known works of classical literature, the only novel in Latin to survive complete, The Golden Ass of Apuleius. The introduction studies how these disparate texts have been adapted, and notes draw attention to points of detail, comparing and contrasting the two plays. The background to the development of the genre of opéra-comique is also discussed, as is Piron’s use of the musical material associated with the genre in the first decades of its existence.

At this time of momentous change, the three authors represented in this volume contributed to the Europe-wide debate over the nature of women and their position in society. Benito Jerónimo Feijoo was an admired scholar and a prolific author. One of his most controversial essays was Defence of Women, which argued that women were men's intellectual equals. This sparked a pamphlet war that continued for twenty-five years. Josefa Amar y Borbón was a writer and translator who submitted her own spirited argument, the Defence of the Talents of Women, to a debate on whether women should be admitted to the new Economic Societies. She also demanded in her Discourse on the Education of Women that women should be given the opportunity to study and learn. At the very end of the century, Inés Joyes y Blake published an Apology for Women, arguing that women should develop self-respect, support each other and refuse to be manipulated by insincere lovers and domineering husbands. All three writers wrote with verve and imagination about one of the most important social questions of their day

Amongst their number were Jean Mongin (1637–1698) and Claude Breban (1695–1735), whose letters vividly depict the experience of the evolving colonial world. Writing from Martinique, and Saint Kitts (Saint-Christophe), Mongin describes his attempts to convert Protestants, his ministry to the populations of slaves and their mistreatment by colonists, as well as concerns with unorthodox spiritualities. Breban depicts the rhythms of life in the burgeoning slave colony of Saint-Domingue, with the distinctive cultural and linguistic practices – and cruelty – of its plantation environment. Mongin and Breban’s letters reflect debates about the transatlantic slave trade, and the nature of human difference, and testify to the cultural and social environment of early Creole societies. The letters in this volume are an unrivalled source of information about the lives of enslaved people in the early modern French Caribbean. It can also be seen as a release of multiple signifying possibilities, an opening of the source text to Language in all its plurality. The first view is underpinned by the regime of European standard languages which can be lined up in bilingual dictionaries, by the technology of the printed book, and by the need for regulated communication in political, academic and legal contexts. The second view is most at home in multilingual cultures, in circumstances where language is not standardised (e.g., minority and dialectal communities, and oral cultures), in the fluidity of electronic text, and in literature. A medieval Welsh translation of the first book of the Latin encyclopedia known as Imago Mundi, written by Honorius Augustodunensis in the first quarter of the twelfth century, this text is a fine example of the ties between the intellectual world of Europe and Wales in the late-twelfth/early-thirteenth centuries, when the text was translated, ties that brought across the scientific knowledge based on Roman and late antique sources. Structured according to the four elements: earth, water, air and fire, the text presents geographical, anthropological, and astronomical information, often with historical and mythological contexts. The present edition follows that organizational principle, providing a glimpse into the medieval understanding of the overarching structure of the universe. The text is presented in its historical and literary context, with an updated account of its transmission. A commentary on the scientific context of the most interesting passages is provided, as well as a linguistic one. The edition also provides an overview of the variants by printing parallel texts based on all surviving medieval manuscript witnesses for a number of selected chapters.
