Il s'agit alors de relations sexuelles dites non-romantiques (Rnr). Bien que l'association entre le bien-être psychologique et les Rnr ait été examinée chez les jeunes adultes, particulièrement ceux fréquentant l'université, elle l'a moins été chez les adolescents. En se basant sur les données d'une enquête représentative d'adolescents québécois de 14 à 18 ans fréquentant les écoles secondaires publiques, cette thèse à deux articles explore les différences de genre et entre deux formes de Rnr, soit les amitiés avec bénéfices et les aventures sans lendemain, à l'intérieur de cette association. Le premier article examine le rôle prédicteur de cinq mesures de bien-être psychologique (détresse psychologique, idéations suicidaires, estime de soi, consommation d'alcool, et consommation de drogues) dans l'engagement dans des Rnr sur une période de six mois chez des garçons et des filles sexuellement actifs (N = 2 601). Le deuxième article examine les conséquences associées aux mêmes mesures de bien-être psychologique six mois après un tel engagement en contrôlant pour le bien-être psychologique au premier temps de mesure (N = 2 304). Des analyses de régressions multinomiales pour le premier article et des analyses acheminatoires pour le deuxième article ont été effectuées. Les résultats indiquent que les idéations suicidaires, la consommation d'alcool, et la consommation de drogues sont associées à un plus grand engagement dans des Rnr chez les filles, alors que la consommation d'alcool est associée à un tel engagement chez les garçons. Ce sont également les filles qui vivent une faible augmentation de leur détresse psychologique et de leur consommation d'alcool et de drogues six mois après un tel engagement, alors que les garçons ne présentent aucun changement dans leur bien-être psychologique. Toutefois, les résultats du deuxième article permettent de constater que ce changement chez les filles est faible. Les implications de ces résultats sur la recherche et la pratique sont abordées.

Très peu de recherches, à notre connaissance, ont été effectuées sur cette thématique chez les jeunes, précisément lorsqu'il est question de vivre une relation amoureuse à l'adolescence. Pourtant, les relations de couple débutent souvent à l'adolescence et peuvent avoir des conséquences sur les relations futures. Ainsi, cette étude s'intéresse à l'intimidation, mais lorsqu'elle survient par le biais de commentaires négatifs reçus par rapport au poids en contexte de relation amoureuse. L'objectif global vise à comprendre l'influence de vivre une relation amoureuse à l'adolescence et des commentaires négatifs sur le poids sur la satisfaction de l'image corporelle et l'estime de soi. Cette étude est de nature transversale. L'échantillon comprend 740 élèves, dont 382 filles et 358 garçons âgés de 11 à 17 ans. Les adolescents ont rempli individuellement en classe un questionnaire en ligne incluant des mesures portant sur diverses dimensions liées à l'estime de soi, l'image corporelle de même que des indicateurs liés à leur relation amoureuse. Les résultats démontrent que les filles ont significativement une moins bonne estime de soi, sont moins satisfaites de leur apparence et ont plus peur de l'évaluation négative de leur apparence par autrui que les garçons. Les filles désiraient davantage une silhouette plus mince alors que les garçons une silhouette plus forte. Concernant le fait de vivre ou non une relation amoureuse, les filles en couple ont une moins bonne estime de soi et elles ont reçu plus souvent des commentaires négatifs par le partenaire amoureux, alors que ceci n'est pas observé chez les garçons. De plus, les adolescents en couple, filles et garçons, sont moins satisfaits de leur apparence et ont une plus grande peur de l'évaluation négative de leur apparence par autrui. Pour ce qui est des liens entre l'IMC et l'insatisfaction corporelle, les adolescents ayant un partenaire amoureux affichent plus souvent un poids normal et ceux qui n'en ont pas affichent plus fréquemment un poids insuffisant. L'étude du lien entre les variables et la satisfaction amoureuse a permis de constater que la satisfaction amoureuse était corrélée positivement avec l'estime de soi. Finalement, les commentaires négatifs reçus par un partenaire amoureux sur le poids et l'apparence étaient associés à une plus faible estime de soi et à la peur de l'évaluation négative de l'apparence. En somme, les résultats de cette étude viennent confirmer l'importance d'étayer la recherche sur les commentaires par rapport au poids en plus de sensibiliser davantage les adolescents aux impacts négatifs de vivre de l'intimidation dans leur relation amoureuse au sujet de leur apparence.
