Book excerpt: Jan M. Broekman is since 1996 Professor emeritus of Philosophy of Law and Legal Theory at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and of Philosophy and Medical Ethics at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam (Netherlands).During a long and distinguished career he has won an international reputation for his work in the fields of legal anthropology, legal theory and the philosophy of law and medicine. He published widely in these fields and lectured throughout Europe, Latin America and the United States of America. This Festschrift reflects some important themes of his work, especially the ones concerning the intertwinement of legal, medical and moral discourse and its related aspects in technology, politics and anthropology.Due to their different fields of research, the authors approach their topic from their own scientific and cultural perspective. The contributions provide the reader with well-documented and skilled insights into specific questions in many countries like Germany, Brasil, Chile, Italy, Belgium and the United States of America. The composition of the colourful range of contributions is focussed on the core theme of both legal modernism and post-modernism: the tacit assumption of a discursive unity behind thinking, acting and talking. The mimetic representation of man and humanity in legal and medical discourse is built on this assumption.Fundamental questions belonging to the discursive unity are dealt with, for instance concerning language and reality; being and mimesis; norms, rights and facts. They are confronted with actual questions in health care (quality of life, autonomy, the elderly), in European politics and in economics. The contributions document the leading developments in today's legal, medical and philosophical debates. They will provide the reader with outstanding thoughts on the future orientation of law in society.

Book Synopsis Imago Dei: Man/Woman Created in the Image of God by : George Hobson

This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question "What is human nature?" is in vogue today. Like everything else, this concept is being deconstructed in the context of the reigning ideology of individualistic materialism. Is there a fixed human nature, or is this simply a manipulatable social construct with no objective reference? This book says: "Yes, there is: the imago Dei: man/woman created in the image of God." Hobson argues that this text from Genesis 1:26-28 is a God-given anthropological revelation that establishes the relational bond of human beings with their Creator and also with his creation, for which the imago equips us to be responsible stewards. Many of Hobson's essays were delivered as talks in parishes. They explore from multiple angles the import of the imago Dei for theological and sacramental reflection, apologetics, aesthetics, art, and, at a hands-on practical level, for pastoral counseling and inner healing. His texts, one of which opens with a discussion of genocide, contain incisive critiques of the dark side of modernity alongside wide-ranging demonstrations of the pertinence of the imago Dei to the current debates about human dignity and rights. His book is a ringing call to the church to take the measure of the value of this anthropological revelation for its proclamation of the gospel.
Download or read book Genesis written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2009-11-23 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genesis begins the Bible, and is foundational to it. In recent years, it has become commonplace for both humanists and churchmen to sneer at anyone who takes Genesis 1-11 as historical. Yet to believe in the myth of evolution is to accept trillions of miracles to account for our cosmos. Spontaneous generation, the development of something out of nothing, and the blind belief in the miraculous powers of chance, require tremendous faith. Darwinism is irrationality and insanity compounded. Theology without literal six-day creationism becomes alien to the God of Scripture because it turns from the God Who acts and Whose Word is the creative word and the word of power, to a belief in process as god. The god of the non-creationists is the creation of man and a figment of their imagination. They must play games with the Bible to vindicate their position. Evolution is both naive and irrational. Its adherents violate the scientific canons they profess by their fanatical and intolerant belief. The entire book of Genesis is basic to Biblical theology. The church needs to re-study it to recognize its centrality.

Book Synopsis The Concept of Human Dignity in Human Rights Discourse by : David Kretzmer
Download or read book The Concept of Human Dignity in Human Rights Discourse written by David Kretzmer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of human dignity plays a central role in human rights discourse. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognition of the inherent dignity and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. The international Covenants on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and on Civil and Political Rights state that all human rights derive from inherent dignity of the human person. Some modern constitutions include human dignity as a fundamental non-derogable right; others mention it as a right to be protected alongside other rights. It is not only lawyers concerned with human rights who have to contend with the concept of human dignity. The concept has been discussed by, inter alia, theologians, philosophers, and anthropologists. In this book leading scholars in constitutional and international law, human rights, theology, philosophy, history and classics, from various countries, discuss the concept of human dignity from differing perspectives. These perspectives help to elucidate the meaning of the concept in human rights discourse.
