Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Latin American Theoretical Inf- matics (LATIN) conference that was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, April 5–8, 2004. The LATIN series of symposia was launched in 1992 to foster interactions between the Latin American community and computer scientists around the world. This was the sixth event in the series, following S ̃ ao Paulo, Brazil (1992), Valparaiso, Chile (1995), Campinas, Brazil (1998), Punta del Este, Uruguay (2000), and Cancun, Mexico (2002). The proceedings of these conferences were also published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series: Volumes 583, 911, 1380, 1776, and 2286, respectively. Also, as before, we published a selection of the papers in a special issue of a prestigious journal. We received 178 submissions. Each paper was assigned to four program c- mittee members, and 59 papers were selected. This was 80% more than the previous record for the number of submissions. We feel lucky to have been able to build on the solid foundation provided by the increasingly successful previous LATINs. And we are very grateful for the tireless work of Pablo Mart ́ ?nez L ́ opez, the Local Arrangements Chair. Finally, we thank Springer-Verlag for publishing these proceedings in its LNCS series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at CONCUR 2005, the 16th - ternational Conference on Concurrency Theory. The purpose of the CONCUR series of conferences is to bring together researchers, developers, and students in order to advance the theory of concurrency and to promote its applications. This year’s conference was in San Francisco, California, from August 23 to August 26. We received 100 submissions in response to a call for papers. Each subm- sionwasassignedto at leastthreemembers ofthe ProgramCommittee; in many cases, reviews were solicited from outside experts. The ProgramCommittee d- cussed the submissions electronically, judging them on their perceived imp- tance, originality, clarity, and appropriateness to the expected audience. The Program Committee selected 38 papers for presentation. Because of the format of the conference and the high number of submissions, many good papers could not be included. Although submissions werereadand evaluated, the papers that appear in this volume may di?er in form and contents from the corresponding submissions. It is expected that many of the papers will be further revised and submitted to refereed archival journals for publication.

Book excerpt: By the end of the 19th century, British imperial medical officers and Christian medical missionaries had introduced Western medicine to Tibet, Sikkim, and Bhutan. Their Footprints Remain uses archival sources, personal letters, diaries, and oral sources in order to tell the fascinating story of how this once-new medical system became imbedded in the Himalayas. Of interest to anyone with an interest in medical history and anthropology, as well as the Himalayan world, this volume not only identifies the individuals involved and describes how they helped to spread this form of imperialist medicine, but also discusses its reception by a local people whose own medical practices were based on an entirely different understanding of the world.

The authors of Logic and Automata take the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of Wolfgang Thomas to present a tour d’horizon of automata theory and logic. The twenty papers in this volume cover many different facets of logic and automata theory, emphasizing the connections to other disciplines such as games, algorithms, and semigroup theory, as well as discussing current challenges in the field.

Book excerpt: A memorial conference for Leon Ehrenpreis was held at Temple University, November 15-16, 2010. In the spirit of Ehrenpreis’s contribution to mathematics, the papers in this volume, written by prominent mathematicians, represent the wide breadth of subjects that Ehrenpreis traversed in his career, including partial differential equations, combinatorics, number theory, complex analysis and a bit of applied mathematics. With the exception of one survey article, the papers in this volume are all new results in the various fields in which Ehrenpreis worked . There are papers in pure analysis, papers in number theory, papers in what may be called applied mathematics such as population biology and parallel refractors and papers in partial differential equations. The mature mathematician will find new mathematics and the advanced graduate student will find many new ideas to explore.A biographical sketch of Leon Ehrenpreis by his daughter, a professional journalist, enhances the memorial tribute and gives the reader a glimpse into the life and career of a great mathematician.
