Prepared as a tribute to Carl Adam Petri on the occasion of his 60th birthday, it is devoted to an outstanding personality and his pioneering and fruitful scientific work. Part I (70 pages of over 600) presents the congratulatory addresses and invited talks that were given at an Anniversary Colloquium. The contributions of this part honor Carl Adam Petri and his work from many different perspectives. Part II is a collection of invited papers discussing various aspects of the theme Concurrency and Nets. These papers are contributed partly by researchers that were or are still associated with the Petri Institute at GMD and partly by researchers whose scientific work deals with Net Theory or related system models. The topics range from basic theoretical aspects to application oriented methods.

Book Synopsis Concurrent Object-Oriented Programming and Petri Nets by : Gul A. Agha
Download or read book Concurrent Object-Oriented Programming and Petri Nets written by Gul A. Agha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-04-18 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concurrency and distribution have become the dominant paradigm and concern in computer science. Despite the fact that much of the early research in object-oriented programming focused on sequential systems, objects are a natural unit of distribution and concurrency - as elucidated early on by research on the Actor model. Thus, models and theories of concurrency, the oldest one being Petri nets, and their relation to objects are an attractive topic of study. This book presents state-of-the-art results on Petri nets and concurrent object-oriented programming in a coherent and competent way. The 24 thoroughly reviewed and revised papers are organized in three sections. The first consists of long papers, each presenting a detailed approach to integrating Petri nets and object-orientation. Section II includes shorter papers with emphasis on concrete examples to demonstrate the approach. Finally, section III is devoted to papers which significantly build on the Actor model of computation.

Book Synopsis Transactions on Petri Nets and Other Models of Concurrency II by : Wil M. P. van der Aalst
Download or read book Transactions on Petri Nets and Other Models of Concurrency II written by Wil M. P. van der Aalst and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transactions on Petri Nets and Other Models of Concurrency (ToPNoC) II These Transactions publish archival papers in the broad area of Petri nets and other models of concurrency, ranging from theoretical work to tool support and industrial applications. ToPNoC issues are published as LNCS volumes, and hence are widely distributed and indexed. This Journal has its own Editorial Board which selects papers based on a rigorous two-stage refereeing process. ToPNoC contains: - Revised versions of a selection of the best papers from workshops and tutorials at the annual Petri net conferences - Special sections/issues within particular subareas (similar to those published in the Advances in Petri Nets series) - Other papers invited for publication in ToPNoC - Papers submitted directly to ToPNoC by their authors The second volume of ToPNoC focuses on Concurrency in Process-Aware Information Systems. Although the topic of business process management using information technology has been addressed by consultants and software developers in depth, more fundamental approaches towards such Process-Aware Information Systems (PAISs) have been rather uncommon. It wasn't until the 1990s that researchers started to work on the foundations of PAISs. Clearly, concurrency theory is an essential ingredient in these foundations as business processes are highly concurrent involving all types of routing logic and resource allocation mechanisms. The 16 papers in this special issue of ToPNoC cover topics ranging from the formal (mostly Petri-net based) foundations of PAISs to more applied topics such as flexibility and process mining. Thus, this volume gives a good overview of the state of the art in PAIS research.

This book was released on 1987-05-26 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is the second of two parts which constitute the proceedings of the 1986 Advanced Course on Petri Nets in Bad Honnef. It discusses tools supporting the design of petri nets as well as their modification and analysis, presents a variety of applications, and covers the relationship of petri nets to other concurrency models. These current issues of the "Advances in Petri Nets" present the most significant recent results in the application and theory of petri nets to the broad computer science community. They particularly address those who are: - interested in systems design and would like to learn to use petri nets, - familiar with subareas of the theory or the applications of nets and wish to become acquainted with the whole area, - interested in learning about recent results presented within a unified framework, - going to learn about successfully applying petri nets in - various practical situations, - interested in the relationship of petri nets to other models of concurrent systems.
Book Synopsis Control of Discrete-Event Systems by : Carla Seatzu
Download or read book Control of Discrete-Event Systems written by Carla Seatzu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-07-27 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of Discrete-event Systems provides a survey of the most important topics in the discrete-event systems theory with particular focus on finite-state automata, Petri nets and max-plus algebra. Coverage ranges from introductory material on the basic notions and definitions of discrete-event systems to more recent results. Special attention is given to results on supervisory control, state estimation and fault diagnosis of both centralized and distributed/decentralized systems developed in the framework of the Distributed Supervisory Control of Large Plants (DISC) project. Later parts of the text are devoted to the study of congested systems though fluidization, an over approximation allowing a much more efficient study of observation and control problems of timed Petri nets. Finally, the max-plus algebraic approach to the analysis and control of choice-free systems is also considered. Control of Discrete-event Systems provides an introduction to discrete-event systems for readers that are not familiar with this class of systems, but also provides an introduction to research problems and open issues of current interest to readers already familiar with them. Most of the material in this book has been presented during a Ph.D. school held in Cagliari, Italy, in June 2011.
