Book excerpt: A memorial conference for Leon Ehrenpreis was held at Temple University, November 15-16, 2010. In the spirit of Ehrenpreis’s contribution to mathematics, the papers in this volume, written by prominent mathematicians, represent the wide breadth of subjects that Ehrenpreis traversed in his career, including partial differential equations, combinatorics, number theory, complex analysis and a bit of applied mathematics. With the exception of one survey article, the papers in this volume are all new results in the various fields in which Ehrenpreis worked . There are papers in pure analysis, papers in number theory, papers in what may be called applied mathematics such as population biology and parallel refractors and papers in partial differential equations. The mature mathematician will find new mathematics and the advanced graduate student will find many new ideas to explore.A biographical sketch of Leon Ehrenpreis by his daughter, a professional journalist, enhances the memorial tribute and gives the reader a glimpse into the life and career of a great mathematician.

Book excerpt: This volume is based on two special sessions held at the AMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans in January 2007, and a satellite workshop held in Baton Rouge on January 4-5, 2007. It consists of invited expositions that together represent a broad spectrum of fields, stressing surprising interactions and connections between areas that are normally thought of as disparate. The main topics are geometry and integral transforms. On the one side are harmonic analysis, symmetric spaces, representation theory (the groups include continuous and discrete, finite and infinite, compact and non-compact), operator theory, PDE, and mathematical probability. Moving in the applied direction we encounter wavelets, fractals, and engineering topics such as frames and signal and image processing. The subjects covered in this book form a unified whole, and they stand at the crossroads of pure and applied mathematics. The articles cover a broad range in harmonic analysis, with the main themes related to integral geometry, the Radon transform, wavelets and frame theory. These themes can loosely be grouped together as follows:Frame Theory and ApplicationsHarmonic Analysis and Function SpacesHarmonic Analysis and Number TheoryIntegral Geometry and Radon TransformsMultiresolution Analysis, Wavelets, and Applications

Book excerpt: The study of geometric discrepancy, which provides a framework for quantifying the quality of a distribution of a finite set of points, has experienced significant growth in recent decades. This book provides a self-contained course in number theory, Fourier analysis and geometric discrepancy theory, and the relations between them, at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. It starts as a traditional course in elementary number theory, and introduces the reader to subsequent material on uniform distribution of infinite sequences, and discrepancy of finite sequences. Both modern and classical aspects of the theory are discussed, such as Weyl's criterion, Benford's law, the Koksma–Hlawka inequality, lattice point problems, and irregularities of distribution for convex bodies. Fourier analysis also features prominently, for which the theory is developed in parallel, including topics such as convergence of Fourier series, one-sided trigonometric approximation, the Poisson summation formula, exponential sums, decay of Fourier transforms, and Bessel functions.

Book excerpt: In this text, integral geometry deals with Radon’s problem of representing a function on a manifold in terms of its integrals over certain submanifolds—hence the term the Radon transform. Examples and far-reaching generalizations lead to fundamental problems such as: (i) injectivity, (ii) inversion formulas, (iii) support questions, (iv) applications (e.g., to tomography, partial di erential equations and group representations). For the case of the plane, the inversion theorem and the support theorem have had major applications in medicine through tomography and CAT scanning. While containing some recent research, the book is aimed at beginning graduate students for classroom use or self-study. A number of exercises point to further results with documentation. From the reviews: “Integral Geometry is a fascinating area, where numerous branches of mathematics meet together. the contents of the book is concentrated around the duality and double vibration, which is realized through the masterful treatment of a variety of examples. the book is written by an expert, who has made fundamental contributions to the area.” —Boris Rubin, Louisiana State University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book has been out of print for some time and I have decided to follow the publisher's kind suggestion to prepare a new edition. Many examples with explicit inversion formulas and range theo rems have been added, and the group-theoretic viewpoint emphasized. For example, the integral geometric viewpoint of the Poisson integral for the disk leads to interesting analogies with the X-ray transform in Euclidean 3-space. To preserve the introductory flavor of the book the short and self-contained Chapter Von Schwartz' distributions has been added. Here §5 provides proofs of the needed results about the Riesz potentials while §§3-4 develop the tools from Fourier analysis following closely the account in Hormander's books (1963] and [1983]. There is some overlap with my books (1984] and [1994b] which however rely heavily on Lie group theory. The present book is much more elementary. I am indebted to Sine Jensen for a critical reading of parts of the manuscript and to Hilgert and Schlichtkrull for concrete contributions men tioned at specific places in the text. Finally I thank Jan Wetzel and Bonnie Friedman for their patient and skillful preparation of the manuscript.

Book excerpt: This book offers a gentle introduction to the geometry of numbers from a modern Fourier-analytic point of view. One of the main themes is the transfer of geometric knowledge of a polytope to analytic knowledge of its Fourier transform. The Fourier transform preserves all of the information of a polytope, and turns its geometry into analysis. The approach is unique, and streamlines this emerging field by presenting new simple proofs of some basic results of the field. In addition, each chapter is fitted with many exercises, some of which have solutions and hints in an appendix. Thus, an individual learner will have an easier time absorbing the material on their own, or as part of a class. Overall, this book provides an introduction appropriate for an advanced undergraduate, a beginning graduate student, or researcher interested in exploring this important expanding field.

Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings from a conference at Temple University celebrating the work of Leon Ehrenpreis, distinguished by its insistence upon getting to the heart of the mathematics and by its astonishing consistency in doing so successfully. Professor Ehrenpreis has worked in many areas of mathematics and has found connections among all of them. For example, we can find his analysis ideas in the context of number theory, geometric thinking within analysis, transcendental number theory tied to partial differential equations. The conference brought together the communities of mathematicians working in the areas of interest to Professor Ehrenpreis and allowed them to share the research inspired by his work. The collection of articles presents current research on PDE's, several complex variables, analytic number theory, integral geometry and tomography. The thinking of Professor Ehrenpreis has contributed fundamental concepts and techniques in these areas and has motivated a wealth of research results. This volume offers a survey of the fundamental principles that unified the conference and influenced the mathematics of Leon Ehrenpreis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the second of Helgason's impressive three books on Lie groups and the geometry and analysis of symmetric spaces, is an introduction to group-theoretic methods in analysis on spaces with a group action. The first chapter deals with the three two-dimensional spaces of constant curvature, requiring only elementary methods and no Lie theory. It is remarkably accessible and would be suitable for a first-year graduate course. The remainder of the book covers more advanced topics, including the work of Harish-Chandra and others, but especially that of Helgason himself. Indeed, the exposition can be seen as an account of the author's tremendous contributions to the subject.Chapter I deals with modern integral geometry and Radon transforms. The second chapter examines the interconnection between Lie groups and differential operators. Chapter IV develops the theory of spherical functions on semisimple Lie groups with a certain degree of completeness, including a study of Harish-Chandra's $c$-function. The treatment of analysis on compact symmetric spaces (Chapter V) includes some finite-dimensional representation theory for compact Lie groups and Fourier analysis on compact groups. Each chapter ends with exercises (with solutions given at the end of the book!) and historical notes. This book, which is new to the AMS publishing program, is an excellent example of the author's well-known clear and careful writing style. It has become the standard text for the study of spherical functions and invariant differential operators on symmetric spaces. Sigurdur Helgason was awarded the Steele Prize for Groups and Geometric Analysis and the companion volume, ""Differential Geometry, Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces.""

Book excerpt: Since their emergence in 1917, tomography and inverse problems remain active and important fields that combine pure and applied mathematics and provide strong interplay between diverse mathematical problems and applications. The applied side is best known for medical and scientific use, in particular, medical imaging, radiotherapy, and industrial non-destructive testing. Doctors use tomography to see the internal structure of the body or to find functional information, such asmetabolic processes, noninvasively. Scientists discover defects in objects, the topography of the ocean floor, and geological information using X-rays, geophysical measurements, sonar, or other data. This volume, based on the lectures in the Short Course The Radon Transform and Applications to InverseProblems at the American Mathematical Society meeting in Atlanta, GA, January 3-4, 2005, brings together articles on mathematical aspects of tomography and related inverse problems. The articles cover introductory material, theoretical problems, and practical issues in 3-D tomography, impedance imaging, local tomography, wavelet methods, regularization and approximate inverse, sampling, and emission tomography. All contributions are written for a general audience, and the authors have includedreferences for further reading.
