Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Essays on Church and Religion The present volume closes the series of my attempts to deal directly with questions concerning religion and the Church. Indirectly such questions must often, in all serious literary work, present themselves; but in this volume I make them my direct object for the last time. Assuredly it was not for my own pleasure that I entered upon them at first, and it is with anything but reluctance that I now part from them. Neither can I be ignorant what offence my handling of them has given to many whose good-will I value, and with what relief they will learn that the handling is now to cease. Personal considerations, however, ought not in a matter like this to bear sway; and they have not, in fact, determined me to bring to an end the work which I had been pursuing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the Millions: A Selection of Past Essays This Introduction may be regarded as in some sort the long-deferred continuation of the essay, entitled Tracts for the Million, in which it is maintained that the con ditions wherein we are placed in these modernized countries, justify some effort to meet the religious questionings of the semi educated in a way adapted rather to their incapacity than to the demands of better informed and more cultivated minds. We hold, however, that this can be at most a temporary palliative, but never a radical remedy against the spreading epidemic of unbelief. Sand-barriers may retard the ad vancing tide here and there, but eventually it creeps round and over. History shows us that the beliefs of the masses (we are not dealing with units in this discussion) follow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theological Essays Some months ago I seemed to see a way in which I might acquit myself of the obligation. A series of Discourses which had occurred to me as suitable for my own Congregation, in the interval between Quin quagesima Sunday, and Trinity Sunday, might, I thought, embrace all the topics which I should wish to bring under thenotice of Unitarians. It was suggested by a friend that I should throw each discourse into the form of an Essay, after it had been preached. By following this advice, I have been able to avail myself of criticisms which were made on the sermons when they were delivered; to introduce many topics, which would have been unsuitable for the pulpit and at the same time, I hope, to retain something of the feeling of one who is addressing actual men with whom he sym pathises, not Opponents with whom he is arguing. I did not allude to Unitarians while I was preaching. I have said scarcely anything to them in writing, which I do not think just as applicable to the great body of my contemporaries, of all classes and opinions. Nearly every Essay has been re-written, and greatly enlarged in its passage out of the sermon state. Two were originally composed in their present form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Church, 1840 The phrases by which Dr. Pusey and his friends had been currently designated, had partaken very little, if at all, Of this character. The term Pusey ites, which I do not think a good one, and have not adopted, is merely the ordinary mode Of naming a party from one of its recognized leaders: as Ln theran, Wesleyan, Hutchinsonian, and the like. The Master of the Temple designates them as the Oxford Tractarians, - another term merely descriptive, and involving nothing contemptuous or reproachful. The first four essays deal with Church and State in history; the fifth is a bridge of transition to the theory and politics of the modern state, which are treated in the three subsequent essays; The nineth is another bridge of transition, from history and politics to education; and the last three are concerned with different phases of that subject, in the university, the school and the area of adult education. All the essays may be said, in a word, to deal with the history or theory of society. This is an interesting historical reference work for students of politics and religion.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ in the Church: A Volume of Religious Essays It is put forward in the hope that it may suggest a new point of view to some of the many 'men of goodwill' who only desire to see the truth in order to grasp it. It is not at all meant as a controversial work for those who are determined to find fault with it, or with Catholicism. It is, in short, a well-meant attempt to indicate in a few strokes the wood, as a whole, to those who cannot see it for the trees. But, while this is so, I find that Essay II. - where there has had to be produced a sort of rapid sketch of Biblical Theology, from the point of view of eschato logical doctrine - contains much discussion of the outside, or apologetic and critical aspects, of questions, with the heart of which one has been dealing in Essay I. If Essay I. Seems to be too slight in its treatment of certain questions regarding the Gospels, may I hope that Essay II. Will supply its deficiencies? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Christian Church, for well over the first three centuries of her existence, left all the killing to her persecutors and herself per sisted and prevailed not by killing but by dying. Nevertheless, we shall do well, I think, not to deny that even the persecutions tolerated or encouraged by later Church authorities, have con tributed, in certain times and places, to the real consolidation of Christendom. And especially we shall be wise if we do not insist upon any sense, innate in all human hearts, of the essential heinousness of all persecution. And in Paper No. 4 I have attempted to show how the reality of Evil is beyond any direct explanation by anyone - the true state of affairs here is not that believers can explain and that unbelievers cannot explain, still less that Christians cannot explain but that sceptics can. No but that Christianity does, if something other, yet something more than explain Evil. Christianity has Immensely increased the range and depth of our insight as to Evil and, at the same time, Christianity alone has given man the motives and the power not only to trust on, unshaken, in the spiritual sun, in God, in spite of these sun spots of Evil, but to transform Evil into an instrument of Good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Vol. 2: Critical and Historical The Objection which we have in mind, concisely stated, is this: on the one hand, that unity is the tenure of divine favour; that communion with our brethren is the means of communion with our Lord and Saviour; that the Church is not only Apostolic, but Catholic that schism cuts Off the fountains of grace and that es'trange ment from the Christian world is schism; and, on the other, that in matter Of fact our Church is emphatically in a state Of estrangement, having intercourse with no other Christian body in any part of the world, except ing her own dependencies and offshoots. This is the point, which deserves, as we think, to be attentively considered; we make no pretences and have no hopes of doing justice to it in the pages of a Review yet it is something to direct attention to it, and so much we propose to do in the pages which follow.
