Book excerpt: Fundamental understanding of the role of surface films that form in aqueous environments containing hydroxide and chloride, on the corrosion behaviour of pure magnesium was developed. The equivalent electrical circuits for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy that modelled the corrosion mechanism of magnesium in aqueous environments were developed and verified. Laser-assisted surface modification and organo-silane coatings were investigated for improvement of corrosion resistance of AZ91D. In spite of the change in corrosionmorphology, laser-assisted surface modification does not help in improving the over all corrosion resistance of the alloy. Role of specific alkaline surface pre-treatments on the corrosion resistance performance of Bis-1, 2-(TriethoxySilyl) Ethane BTSE coated AZ91D alloy has been investigated. A specific pretreatment before BTSE coating was found to improve the corrosion resistance of the coated substrates, as evidenced by the potentiodynamic polarization results and corroboratedby EIS analysis. Silane coatings were thus developed using Bis (Tri-Methoxy Silyl Propyl)Amine (BTMSPA), Bis (Tri-Methoxy Silyl Propyl) Tetrasulphide (BTMSPT), Bis-(TriEthoxy Silyl Propyl)-Ethane-Dithiol-Carbamate (BTESPEDC), and (2-Di Ethyl PhosphatoEthyl) Tri Ethoxy Silane (DEPETES). The silane coatings developed using BTMSPA and BTMSPT did not improve corrosion resistance. A silane coating developed from novel long chain BTESPEDC silane provided considerable improvement in corrosion resistance, which was attributed to the presence of hydrophobic thiol group and improved cross-linking between the silane molecules. A silanecoating developed using mixture of BTMSPA and DEPETES upon alkali treated AZ91D provided an improvement of at least three orders of magnitude in the corrosion resistance of the coated substrate. EIS analysis revealed high resistance to ingress of electrolyte, and improved cross-linking within the film as the primary reasons of improved corrosion resistance due to the coating of this silane mixture.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnesium (Mg) alloys are the lightest metallic material with excellent physical and mechanical properties. High strength to weight ratio makes them very attractive to the automobile and aerospace industries, but the use of Mg alloys is restricted due to their poor corrosion resistance. For wider use of Mg and its alloys for structural applications, it is necessary to find a durable solution for their poor corrosion resistance. Corrosion is essentially a surface degradation process, which can be minimized by suitable surface modification and/or coatings. In this study, the influence of laser surface melting and application of silane coating on the corrosion resistance of ZE41 alloy has been investigated. Influence of laser surface melting and laser processing parameters on the resultant microstructure, and as a result, on the corrosion kinetics has been investigated. Although laser surface melting has profound influence on the resultant surface microstructure, contrary to what has been reported for other magnesium alloys, this treatment has been found to have little effect on the corrosion resistance of ZE41. This has been explained on the basis of the results of the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray mapping, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). SEM investigations of the corroded specimens revealed that the corrosion morphologies of the laser melted and the untreated alloy were significantly different. Development of a uniform silane coating necessitates the presence of a reasonably uniform hydroxide layer on the metal surface. Hence, in the present study, the influence of alkali surface pre-treatment on the corrosion resistance of the silane coated ZE41 has been investigated using potentiodynamic polarization and EIS. This study concludes that alkaline pre-treatment prior to silane coating considerably improves corrosion resistance. A thorough morphological and electrochemical characterization suggests that a particular alkaline pre-treatment, that develops a thick and uniform hydroxide film on the surface, also facilitates formation of a protective silane film on the substrate.Octadecyltrimethoxy silane (ODTMS) has been applied on alkaline pre-treated ZE41 alloy, and, a thorough and systematic electrochemical and analytical investigation of the influence of different coating parameters (such as, silane concentration, pH of hydrolysis and dipping time) on the resultant ODTMS coating, and hence on the corrosion resistance of ZE41 alloy in 0.1 M NaCl has been undertaken. This study suggests that the concentration of ODTMS, pH of hydrolysis and dipping time play crucial roles in the determination of the concentration of the silanols in the coating bath available for bonding with the metal substrate. ZE41 alloy, pre-treated in 3 M sodium hydroxide solution for 48 h, and then immersed for 60 min in the hydroalcoholic solution of 5% ODTMS hydrolysed at pH 7, provided about two and half orders of magnitude improvement in corrosion resistance at 170 h of immersion in 0.1 M sodium chloride solution.

Book excerpt: Biomaterials are used in several medical applications today, such as fixation devices, replacements and surgical equipment. Implants are typical examples of a biomaterial application and there are several different implant materials used today. Conventional implant materialsinclude stainless steels, cobalt-chromium alloys, alumina, polymers (methyl methacrylate), polyethylene etc. There are several impediments associated with long term presence of implants inside body, including allergy and sensitization. After the healing and curing, the implant isremoved by a second surgery which is not only costly but also very painful. To make this process simpler, less painful and cost effective, there is a need for alternative methodology, called the use of temporary biodegradable implants. The purpose of biodegradable implant is to support tissueregeneration and healing by material degradation and simultaneous implant replacement through the surrounding tissues. In recent years there has been increased amount of focus on magnesium and its alloys for their potential use as biodegradable implant materials. Magnesium isbiocompatible; has excellent mechanical properties; is natural for human body, and seems to stimulate new bone formation. However, a serious problem with magnesium is its high corrosion rate with consistent hydrogen gas formation which delays the healing process. Hence, there is need for controlling their degradation rate, by some surface modification. In this research work magnesium based alloy system containing calcium and zinc wasinvestigated (Mg-6Zn-Ca alloy) which are supposed to be non-toxic in the body. The work focused on to mitigate/delay the corrosion rate of the alloy by development of silane based coating systems for effective corrosion resistance and selecting the coating chemistry to providebiocompatibility. Two different types of silane based coating systems were studied anddeveloped. Phosphonato silane approach (DEPETES with MTEOS and BTESPT as precursor)and non-Phosphonato silanes approach (GPTMS with MTEOS) were used to develop coating. As developed coatings were subjected to various detailed characterization techniques like, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and the cross-linking in the coating was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)and performance evaluation, using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Potentiodynamic polarization, hydrogen evolution and pH change. Further, biological responseof human osteoblast cell line on the developed coating system was studied. The in vitro cytotoxicity studies were performed on human osteoblast cells MG-63 to observe cellmorphology, attachment, proliferation and differentiation. It was found that the silane coated alloy shows an improved corrosion resistance and biocompatibility as compared to bare Mg-6Zn-Ca alloy.

In this chapter, a new method to deposit aluminum (Al) film on a Mg alloy surface is demonstrated. Electrodeposition of Al on AZ91D Mg alloy, using an acidic aluminum chloride–1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ionic liquid (AlCl3–EMIC), has been shown to be feasible. The existence of Al coating can cause a substantial increase in corrosion resistance, reducing the susceptibility of Mg alloy to aqueous corrosion. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that Al coating leads to an increase in the polarization resistance of a bare Mg alloy by one order of magnitude in 3.5wt% NaCl solution. Furthermore, the potentiodynamic polarization results show that Al-coated Mg alloy can be passivated, and a wider passive region with a lower passive current density can be obtained if the Al is electrodeposited at a lower applied current or a low cathodic overpotential. The passivity of the co-deposited Al/Zn film is slightly inferior to that of the pure Al coating.

Book excerpt: Magnesium alloys, as the lightest structural metallic material with promising physical, mechanical, and biodegradable properties, have become very attractive for different technical applications, especially for industrial and biomedical fields. However, rapid corrosion is the most critical obstacle that limits its use to play a major role in large-scale applications. The simplest way to control the corrosion rate is to prevent a direct contact of the magnesium substrate with the environment by using surface modification technologies. Silica sol-gel coatings are considered a promising solution to enhance the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys because sol-gel-based coating systems form very stable chemical bonds with the metallic surface. In this chapter, an insight about the advances in silica sol-gel coatings as an alternative method to control the corrosion of Mg and its alloys will be exposed. A wide overview of the most relevant aspects and their current applications, specifically for aerospace, automobile, and biomedical applications will be described. The modification of silica sol-gel matrix by the incorporation of different types of inhibitors to achieve an active barrier property on Mg alloys has been also considered. Finally, the future perspective based on the development of new silica sol-gel coatings on Mg alloy will be presented.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are emerging as a possible biodegradable implant material. The corrosion behavior of pure Mg, AZ31, and AZ91D were evaluated in various In Vitro and In Vivo environments to investigate their potential application of being biomaterials. Mg implants may degrade too quickly in the body, before the natural healing process is complete. Anodization is known to be an effective approach for slowing down the initial corrosion rate of magnesium (Mg) and its alloys. Anodization was investigated to slow down the initial corrosion of Mg in a simulated body corrosive environment. Pure Mg and AZ91D alloy were anodized and their corrosion resistance was compared in terms of anodization behavior and parameters such as applied voltage and current with different anodization time. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, DC polarization, and immersion testing were used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of Mg samples and further optimize anodization parameters. The results showed that anodization increased the corrosion resistance of both pure Mg and AZ91D samples. Further characterization showed the anodized layers on both pure Mg and AZ91D consisted of Mg, O and Si, in the mixture of MgO and Mg2SiO4. The anodization of AZ91D was further investigated by studying the specific use of oxy-salts to improve the corrosion resistance of anodization coatings. Oxy-salts of silicate, phosphate, and carbonate were added separately to a sodium hydroxide alkaline electrolyte used for anodization. This modified process was investigated in terms of anodizing behavior, the surface properties of the film, and enhanced corrosion protection of the metal. Anodization of AZ91D using the silicate containing electrolyte generated sparks and increased the electrolyte temperature, and produced a thicker and more corrosion resistant layer than the other oxy-salts. In this process, MgO and SiO2 formed Mg2SiO4 at high temperature and silicon (Si) in the anodized coating was mainly presented in Mg2SiO4. Phosphorus (P) and carbon (C) were not found in the coatings from the phosphate and carbonate containing electrolyte anodizations. The effects of silicate concentration and anodizing time on the surface properties and corrosion resistance were studied in detail. A detailed chemical structure of the Si-containing anodized coating was postulated. Moreover, this paper described the water-based bis-[triethoxysilyl] ethane (BTSE) silane modification on the surface of Magnesium-Yttrium (Mg-Y) alloy for adhesion promoting, crosslinking of resins, and corrosion protection. Surface characterization of ESEM, FTIR, and EDX showed the hydrolysis and condensation of silane resulted in a strong covalent bonding. In Vivo corrosion behaviors of the uncoated and coated Mg-Y alloy were evaluated in the acute implantation by using novel self-developed corrosion probes which were inserted into the body cavity and subcutaneous tissue of the mice. In Vitro experiments, compared to In Vivo results, artificial simulated body solutions were more corrosive. Based on the electrochemical experiments of potentio-dynamics polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the epoxy-modified BTSE silane coating successfully increased corrosion resistance at the initial stage of implantation.

Book excerpt: The escalation of ongoing research on the topic of conversion coatings for magnesium alloys confirms that the search continues for appropriate replacements to toxic chromate-based coatings. This chapter reviews the performance of the range of typical conversion coating technologies presently available. As a means to rationalise coating performance and characteristics more generally, thermodynamic analysis has been used to compare coating processes and coating pretreatment, the latter of which appears to be at least as significant as the choice of coating technology itself.

Book excerpt: Magnesium and its alloys are promising materials for automotive, aerospace and bio-implant applications due to low density (1.81g/cm3), very low elastic modulus (45GPa) and high tensile yield strength (200MPa). However, they corrode too quickly in aggressive environments and possess poor wear resistance. Wear and corrosion are essentially surface dependent degradation which may be improved by suitable modification of surface microstructure and composition. Laser as a source of coherent and monochromatic radiation may be applied for tailoring the surface microstructure and composition. In the present contribution, a detailed overview of laser surface engineering of magnesium-based alloys is presented. Finally, the future scope of application of laser surface engineering of magnesium-based alloys is presented with examples.
