Book Synopsis Current of Music by : Theodor W. Adorno
Download or read book Current of Music written by Theodor W. Adorno and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fleeing the Nazis, Theodor W. Adorno lived in New York City as a refugee from 1938 until 1941. During these years, he was intensively involved in a study of how the recently developed techniques for the nation-wide transmission of music over radio were transforming the perception of music itself. This broad ranging radio research was conceived as nothing less than an investigation, partly empirical, of Walter Benjamin's speculative claims for the emancipatory potential of art in the age of its mechanical reproduction. The results of Adorno's project set him decisively at odds with Benjamin's theses and at the same time became the body of thinking that formed the basis for Adornos own aesthetics in his Philosophy of New Music. Current of Music is the title that Adorno himself gave to this research project. For complex reasons, however, Adorno was not able to bring the several thousands of pages of this massive study, most of it written in English, to a final form prior to leaving New York for California, where he would immediately begin work with Max Horkheimer on the Dialectic of Enlightenment. Robert Hullot-Kentor, the distinguished Adorno scholar, reconstructed Adorno's project for the Adorno Archive in Germany and provides a lengthy and informative introduction to the fragmentary texts collected in this volume. Current of Music will be widely discussed for the light it throws on the development of Adorno's thought, on his complex relationship with Walter Benjamin, but most of all for the important perspectives it provides on questions of popular culture, the music of industrial entertainment, the history of radio and the social dimensions of the reproduction of art.

Book excerpt: "L'art nouveau, an artistic movement of a highly eclectic nature that developed in the late 19th century, took its lead from such diverse sources as Japanese art or the medieval revivalism of the Arts and Crafts. Perhaps in no medium was it better represented than in pottery, whose technical possibilities allowed for great freedom of expression. This richly illustrated dictionary, with glossary and select signatures, lists over 1,100 artists, ceramists and firms that participated in the creation of Art Nouveau ceramics in France, the melting pot of die new aesthetic."--Page 4 of cover.

Download or read book Stocks, Seasons and Sales written by Wouter Ronsijn and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents ten case-studies by eminent scholars dealing with food supply, storage and markets from c. 1600 to c. 2000. Together they present a long-term history of the tools for regulating the rhythms and the seasonal patterns of the agricultural production. How were the vast flows of staple food needed for metropolitan areas organised? What practical difficulties had to be overcome to preserve this food safely? Did people respond to price patterns in search for profit? Were governments successful in imposing regulation? In dealing with these issues, the contributing authors adopt different approaches and investigate cases from England, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Mexico. The focus on the stocks and flows of grains and other foodstuffs raises new questions combining economic, social, political, and environmental issues in the study of agricultural markets and food policies.
