Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987. This book is about the processing of information. The central domain of interest is face-to-face communication in which the speaker makes available both audible and visible characteristics to the perceiver. Articulation by the speaker creates changes in atmospheric pressure for hearing and provides tongue, lip, jaw, and facial movements for seeing. These characteristics must be processed by the perceiver to recover the message conveyed by the speaker. The speaker and perceiver must share a language to make communication possible; some internal representation is necessarily functional for the perceiver to recover the message of the speaker. The current study integrates information-processing and psychophysical approaches in the analysis of speech perception by ear and eye.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second symposium on processing visible language constituted a different "mix" of participants from the first. Greater emphasis was given to the design of language, both in its historical development and in its current display; and to practical questions associated with machine-implementation oflanguage, in the interactions of person and computer, and in the characteristics of the physical and environmental objects that affect the interaction. Another change was that a special session on theory capped the proceedings. Psychologists remained heavily involved, however, both as contributors to and as discussants of the work pre sented. The motivation of the conferences remains one of bringing together graphic designers, engineers, and psychologists concerned with the display and acquisition of visible language. The papers separately tended to emphasize the one of the three disciplines that mark their authors' field of endeavor, but are constructed to be general rather than parochial. Moreover, within the three disciplines, papers emphasized either the textual or the more pictorial aspects. For example, a session on writing systems ranged from principles that seem to characterize all such systems to specific papers on ancient Egyptian writing, modern Korean, and English shorthand. The complementary session on the nontextual media opened with a discussion of general principles of pictorial communication and included papers on communicating instructions, general information, or religious belief through designs and other pictorial forms, as well as a discussion. of misrepresentation.

The publication presents nine contributions on the perceptual system's reliance on visual speech to process and learn language. This learning is addressed in its various stages of development and in reference to typical and atypical language development. Insights are discussed in the areas of multimodelity, environmental constraints, brain maturation and visuo-attentional components.

Book excerpt: Learning by ear and by eye describes the processes involved in understanding spoken and written language and provides examples of activities which develop the receptive skills and practise all four language skills in an interdependent way. It presents strategies to help learners become more effective listeners and readers. Part 1: Listening in a foreign language outlines how this process differs from listening in a first language. It provides ideas for listening for different purposes, for grading activities and for pre- and post-listening work. Part 2: Developing skills for independent reading explores how the MFL classroom can reflect the curriculum, how to encourage independent reading and how to effectively exploit the texts we already have.
