Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art and Science of Surgery The position I have held for the last twenty years as a teacher of anatomy and surgery has placed me under obligations to numerous friends who have frequently requested me to pre pare a work on the principles and practice of surgery; and hav ing been induced to engage in the labor, I found it more and more captivating as progress in the undertaking was made. When my manuscript and illustrations were nearly completed, a fire swept away the toil of years; but not discouraged by the seemingly un toward event, I undertook at once to reproduce what had been lost; and I have obtained so much additional experience, and have acquired so many maturer views upon important chirurgical topics, that my readers may have been the gainers. I begin to congratulate myself upon what I once considered a misfortune. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Surgery: A Presentation of the Scientific Principles Upon Which the Practice of Modern Surgery Is Based MY associate, Dr. Lewis, and myself have undertaken the translating and editing of this text-book on General Surgery, written by Prof. Erich Lexer, because we believe that it presents the present status of the subject of general surgery in a more thorough and complete way than any other text-book. This work is a presentation of the scientific principles upon which the practice of modern surgery is based. In text-books on surgery in all languages two great divisions of the subject are made, and to these two divisions of the subject various names have been given. In England and America, the terms the Science and Art of Surgery and the Principles and Practice of Surgery have been generally employed. On the Continent, the terms General and Special Surgery are used. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A sequel to her seminal book on Chaucer’s House of Fame, Sheila Delany’s elegant and innovative study of Chaucer’s Legend of Good Women explores what it meant to be a reader and a writer, and to be English and a courtier, in the late fourteenth century. The richness of late medieval art, philosophy, and history are powerfully brought to bear on one of Chaucer’s most controversial works. So too are the insights of modern critical theory—semiotics, historicism, and gender studies especially—making this a unique achievement in medieval and Chaucerian studies. Delany’s strikingly original readings of Chaucer’s Orientalism, his sexual wordplay, his theological attitudes, and his treatment of sex and gender have given us a Chaucer for our time. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical texts written in English during the late Middle Ages have in recent years attracted increasing attention among scholars. From approximately 1375 onwards, the use of English began to gain a firmer foothold in medical manuscripts, which in previous centuries had been written mainly in Latin or French. Scholars of Middle English, and editors of medical texts from late medieval England, are thus faced with a huge medical vocabulary which no single volume has yet attempted to define. This dictionary is therefore an essential reference tool. The material analysed in the Dictionary of Medical Vocabulary in English, 1375–1550 includes edited texts, manuscripts and early printed books, and represents three main types of medical writing: surgical manuals and tracts; academic treatises by university-trained physicians, and remedybooks. The dictionary covers four lexical fields: names of sicknesses, body parts, instruments, and medicinal preparations. Entries are structured as follows: (1) headword (2) scribal variants occurring in the texts (3) etymology (4) definition(s), each definition followed by relevant quotations (5) references to corresponding entries in the Dictionary of Old English, Middle English Dictionary, and The Oxford English Dictionary (6) references to academic books and articles containing information on the history and/or meaning of the term.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgery as a medical discipline has from its beginnings appealed to the imagination of many. It is therefore not surprising to find that its colourful past has induced quite a few authors to take up their pens. The truth of this in the Netherlands is witnessed by a number of dissertations and monographs and especially by the numerous articles related to the history of surgery which have appeared in the medical weekly Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde, particularly during the two decades preceding the Second World War. The memorial volume, published in 1977 by the 'Nederlandse Vereniging voor Heelkunde' (Association of Surgeons of the Netherlands) has thoroughly covered the history of Dutch surgery since the tum of the century, but a chronological survey of the earlier events which led to these modem achievements is still wanting. This book has been written with a view to meeting this need. In it, Dutch surgery has by no means been taken as an isolated phenomenon, but considered in its context with European surgery as a whole. Foreign influences on the on surgery abroad are discussed Netherlands and, conversely, Dutch influences whilst contemporary medical thinking is set against a cultural and political back ground. It is hoped that this approach will allow the book to exceed the narrow boundaries of'campanilismo' and make it of interest to non-Dutch readers as well.
