This book was released on 2006 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objectives of the workshop were to raise the importance of managing fishing capacity and effort and discuss strategies that may be used to reduce capacity where necessary as part of taking measures for ensuring long-term sustainable utilization of the fishery resources of Lake Victoria; to develop and agree on mechanisms for assessing overall capacity on the entire lake; and to highlight the linkages between the management of fishing effort, capacity, and concomitant IUU fishing. The results of the workshop include actions for progressing work on the management of fishing capacity as well as guidance for the development of a Regional Plan of Action for the Management of Fishing Capacity on Lake Victoria. This document contains the report of the workshop as well as the papers and input provided by the participants. This document, and in particular, the actions adopted by the workshop participants can serve as a basis for further work aimed at improving regional fisheries management and the management of fishing capacity

Book Synopsis Lake Victoria Fisheries Resources by : Yunus D. Mgaya
Download or read book Lake Victoria Fisheries Resources written by Yunus D. Mgaya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book synthesises the historical trends of the lake fisheries, the lake ecology, biology and biodiversity, socio-economics, stock assessment, aquaculture, fish quality assurance, environmental quality and management of the fisheries resources. The evolution of fisheries in Lake Victoria has undergone dramatic changes over the last few decades, leading to both ecological and socio-economic consequences. The lake has changed from one dominated by haplochromines in the 1950s, to one currently dominated by Nile perch, ‘dagaa’ (Rastrineobola argentea) and Nile tilapia. These changes have mainly been driven by the introduction of the predatory Nile perch in the lake, eutrophication due to increased human activities in the catchment, increased human population growth, overfishing and changes in the global climate system. This work should therefore be a particularly useful reference to fisheries scientists and managers, potential investors, students and other professionals who may be interested in the Lake Victoria fisheries.

Book Synopsis Reinventing Fisheries Management by : T.J. Pitcher
Download or read book Reinventing Fisheries Management written by T.J. Pitcher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judged by a dismaying track record and a consequent downturn in the reputation of fisheries scientists, fisheries management is certainly a candidate for calls for reinvention, with many of the world leaders in this area holding the view that no fishery has ever been properly understood or managed. With fisheries science in a state of flux, this extremely important book seeks a new paradigm that will place this flux of ideas in perspective and help us to choose those that will make fisheries management work. The book was planned at a symposium of over 100 fishery researchers at the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and is organized into five parts: Why does Fisheries Science Need Reinventing?; New Policies; The Role of the Social Sciences; Ecology; Modelling. Carefully integrated and edited by three of the world's leading fishery scientists, this stimulating book should find a place on the shelves of all fishery scientists throughout the world. It will be an invaluable reference source to those studying fish biology, fisheries and oceanography and all those involved in fisheries policy decisions in government and university research establishments.

Book Synopsis Lake Governance by : Velma I. Grover
Download or read book Lake Governance written by Velma I. Grover and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lake Governance book will focus on comparative analysis of governance structures by examining policy, legal and institutional structures of current transboundary commissions to develop a common framework for good governance of transboundary lakes. Cooperation among nations sharing natural resources is important for sustainable use of the shared resources. Lakes contribute a big part to GDP in most of the countries and in some cases are also responsible for providing fisheries (for food, source of protein and livelihood). Climate change and associated risks and uncertainties add more complexity to the problems. This book will explore current water governance challenges, knowledge gaps and recommend a framework for good lake governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one volume, this book brings together a diversity of approaches, theory and frameworks that can be used to analyse the governance of renewable natural resources. Renewable natural resources are under pressure, with over-exploitation and degradation raising concern globally. Understanding governance systems and practice is essential for developing effective and fair solutions. Each chapter provides an introduction to an area of literature and theory and demonstrates application through a case study. The book covers a range of geographical locations, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries, and several types of natural resources. The approaches and theories introduced include common property theory, political ecology, institutional analysis, the social -ecological systems framework and social network analysis. Findings from across the chapters support an analytical focus on institutions and local context and a practical focus on diverse, flexible and inclusive governance solutions. The book serves as an essential introduction to the governance of renewable natural resources for students, researchers and practitioners.
