The longitudinal studies started at approximately age one year and six months and continued till age six. The study is primarily concerned with the acquisition of so-called 'functional categories' and the consequences of their acquisition for the development of grammar. Specific points dealt with in these papers include: gender, number and case and their internal structure (DP vs NP); inflection and its consequences for agreement marking; and word order phenomena (subject-raising constructions (incl. passives), word order in subordinate clauses). The basic hypothesis underlying this study is that early child grammars consist only of lexical categories and that functional categories are implemented later in the child's grammar. Book excerpt: Les études comparatives entre les enfants avec dysphasie (SLI) et les enfants apprenant une langue seconde (L2) mettent en évidence des indices communs d'un développement atypique de la morphosyntaxe, notamment dans le traitement de constructions impliquant de la complexité morphosyntaxique telles que les flexions verbales, les passives, les subordonnées relatives, les questions-QU ou les clitiques objets. Ce mémoire porte sur les implications de la complexité morpho syntaxique dans l'acquisition des pronoms clitiques chez ces deux populations et sur les stratégies de compensation mises en place. Selon l'hypothèse de la complexité computationnelle (Jakubowicz, 1998), les structures impliquant un certain degré de complexité émergent tardivement. La production de clitiques objets exigeant un coût computationnel élevé (dû en partie à leur emplacement préverbal), ils émergent plus tardivement que les clitiques sujets (Hamann et al, 2006). Dans cette étude nous comparons la production des clitiques sujets et objets dans deux épreuves: la production spontanée et la production induite. Cela nous permettra une meilleure appréciation des stratégies de compensation telles que la substitution, l'omission, qui pourra amener à l'identification d'un marqueur clinique de la dysphasie essentiel dans le cadre du diagnostic différentiel. En outre, l'intérêt pratique de ce projet réside dans l'exploitation de ces stratégies compensatoires pour permettre une meilleure prise en charge orthophonique. Des données de production induite des pronoms clitiques et un échantillon de production spontanée ont été recueillis chez des enfants dysphasiques et apprenants L2 du français d'origine anglophone, âgés de 6 à 12 ans. L'analyse des résultats nous a permis de confirmer le rôle de la complexité syntaxique dans l'acquisition des clitiques et de mettre en évidence des comportements différents entre la production induite et la production spontanée dans les deux groupes. Nous avons également observé des stratégies d'évitement différentes chez les enfants L2 et SLI, ces derniers privilégiant l'omission.

A partir de corpus longitudinaux de quatre enfants en interaction avec un adulte, nous nous sommes intéressées au rôle de ces formes dans l'acquisition des articles et des clitiques sujets. L'utilisation du terme « formes de transition », et non de « fillers », nous a permis de décrire des formes produites par les enfants notamment à la fin de l'acquisition des articles et des clitiques sujets. Alors qu'une majorité des études sur les fillers se focalise sur le langage de l'enfant, notre objectif est de mettre en évidence le rôle fondamental de l'interaction entre l'enfant et l'adulte dans le processus d'appropriation des articles et des clitiques sujets. Une étude de l'évolution de la production de formes de transition nous a permis de décrire des tendances générales de développement chez les enfants observés, suivant un certain nombre de variations de l'émergence jusqu'à la maîtrise complète des articles et clitiques sujets. Une analyse de l'évolution des reprises chez l'enfant et l'adulte et du déroulement de leurs échanges nous a conduite au repérage de séquences d'interaction où l'adaptation des reprises de l'adulte aux tâtonnements de l'enfant entraine une progression dans les essais et les productions de ce dernier nous permettant d'illustrer le rôle d'une interaction immédiate adaptée dans le processus d'appropriation des articles et des clitiques sujets.

Lors de précédentes études, il a en effet été montré différents types de comportements à l'égard de la production de ces pronoms (utilisation d'un syntagme nominal, omission, ou évitement de la construction) qui ont conduit de nombreux linguistes à s'interroger sur sa nature même, ainsi que sur le déroulement de son acquisition. Les chercheurs ont ainsi longtemps considéré que la complexité syntaxique pouvait être à l'origine des difficultés à produire le clitique objet, mais n'ont pas trouvé de preuves suffisantes au sein des productions enfantines pour étayer leur théorie. Rejoignant un courant théorique complémentaire qUI assimile les clitiques à des affixes, nous nous sommes spécifiquement intéressés aux suites de clitiques groupés (contenant un clitique objet), que nous proposons de considérer comme des cas de double affixation, en faisant l'hypothèse que cela pouvait représenter une forme de complexité morphologique contraignante pour la production des clitiques accusatifs. Nous avons alors étudié la production des suites de clitiques par des enfants dysphasiques et apprenants L2 du français d'origine anglophone, âgés de 6 à 12 ans, au moyen du Protocole de Production induite des Pronoms Clitiques (Tuller et coll., à paraître). L'analyse des résultats nous a permis d'attester le rôle de la complexité morphologique dans les difficultés à produire les clitiques objets, et d'identifier une stratégie d'évitement consistant en la séparation des clitiques, qui équivaut selon nous à un véritable moyen de compensation potentiellement exploitable dans le cadre de la rééducation orthophonique.
