Book excerpt: The World Food Summit, held in Rome in November 1996, recognised the urgent need for better information. As a result the FIVIMS (Food Insecurity and Vulnerability Information and Mapping System) initiative was launched, as a co-operative venture, to assist countries and the international community to identify the "who, where and why" of food insecurity. Even before the Summit, many countries had established approaches for this purpose based on multidisciplinary networks, at national and local levels. One of these approaches, developed first in French-speaking Africa, is the FSIEWS method (Food Security Information and Early Warning System) proposed in this handbook as one of the tools available to those engaged in the fight against hunger. This contribution to the FIVIMS initiative is addressed to the national technical officers at central and decentralised level, as well as to their collaborators from the technical assistance community.

Book Synopsis Agricultural Growth Linkages in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Christopher L. Delgado
Download or read book Agricultural Growth Linkages in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Christopher L. Delgado and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much extra net income growth can be had in rural areas of Africa by increasing the spending power of local households? The answer depends on how rural households spend increments to income, whether the items desired can be imported to the local area in response to increased demand, and, if not, whether increased demand will lead to new local production or simply to price rises. For every dollar in new farm income earned, at least one additional-tional dollar could be realized from growth multipliers, according to Agricultural Growth Linkages in Sub-Saharan Africa, Research Report 107, by Christopher L. Delgado, Jane Hopkins, and Valerie A. Kelly, with Peter Hazell, Anna A. McKenna, Peter Gruhn, Behjat Hojjati, Jayashree Sil, and Claude Courbois.
Book Synopsis A Not-so Natural Disaster by : Xavier Crombé
Download or read book A Not-so Natural Disaster written by Xavier Crombé and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, a famine ravaged the country of Niger. From the outset, the media focused more on the supposed natural causes of the food shortage& —the droughts and locust infestations that have always plagued the region& —rather than the political issues that kept NGOs and the government from adequately addressing the crisis. In fact, a more comprehensive study would have revealed that drought and locusts overtook the Sahel region a year before the famine began and that the death of tens of thousands from malnutrition was not a "natural" phenomenon.Through the diligent work of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the humanitarian organization also known as Doctors Without Borders, a more accurate picture of the 2005 Niger crisis can now take shape. MSF treated more than 60,000 children for severe malnutrition during the famine-one of the most ambitious operations in the organization's history. Struggling to mobilize others to intervene in this emergency situation, the MSF sparked controversy among a variety of actors trying to manage the crisis, which led to an intense argument over the exact nature of the situation they confronted. The public nature of the MSF's involvement, outside of the zones in which it traditionally operates, led to new routes of reflection and insight. The wisdom and knowledge the organization gained informs the essays contained in this book, a balanced, multifaceted account of the factors that allowed a preventable disaster to occur. This unique volume also details the necessary steps Niger should take to prevent this tragedy from happening again.
