Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the history of French nineteenth-century stage music have blossomed in the last decade, encouraging a revision of the view of the primacy of Austro-German music during the period and rebalancing the scholarly field away from instrumental music (key to the Austro-German hegemony) and towards music for the stage. This change of emphasis is having an impact on the world of opera production, with new productions of works not heard since the nineteenth century taking their place in the modern repertory. This awakening of enthusiasm has come at something of a price. Selling French opera as little more than an important precursor to Verdi or Wagner has entailed a focus on works produced exclusively for the Paris Opéra at the expense of the vast range of other types of stage music produced in the capital: opéra comique, opérette, comédie-vaudeville and mélodrame, for example. The first part of this book therefore seeks to reintroduce a number of norms to the study of stage music in Paris: to re-establish contexts and conventions that still remain obscure. The second and third parts acknowledge Paris as an importer and exporter of opera, and its focus moves towards the music of its closest neighbours, the Italian-speaking states, and of its most problematic partners, the German-speaking states, especially the music of Weber and Wagner. Prefaced by an introduction that develops the volume’s overriding intellectual drivers of cultural exchange, genre and institution, this collection brings together twelve of the author’s previously published articles and essays, fully updated for this volume and translated into English for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have used Levinas as a lens through which to view many authors and texts, fields of endeavor, and works of art. Yet no book-length work or dedicated volume has brought this thoughtful lens to bear in a sustained discussion of the works of Shakespeare. It should not surprise anyone that Levinas identified his own thinking as Shakespearean. "The play's the thing" for both, or put differently, the observation of intersubjectivity is. What may surprise and indeed delight all learned readers is to consider what we might yet gain from considering each in light of the other. Comprising leading scholars in philosophy and literature, Of Levinas and Shakespeare: "To See Another Thus" is the first book-length work to treat both great thinkers. Lear, Hamlet, and Macbeth dominate the discussion; however, essays also address Cymbeline, The Merchant of Venice, and even poetry, such as Venus and Adonis. Volume editors planned and contributors deliver a thorough treatment from multiple perspectives, yet none intends this volume to be the last word on the subject; rather, they would have it be a provocation to further discussion, an enticement for richer enjoyment, and an invitation for deeper contemplation of Levinas and Shakespeare.

This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the majority of scholars, the Animal Apocalypse is a militant text, a piece of pro-Maccabean propaganda. This text, however, develops theological reflections that are distinctly different from a justification of an armed struggle. Its themes are even incompatible with the Maccabean movement. It is impossible to condemn the Second Temple and, at the same time, mobilise people for a fight in order to purify that very Temple. After dealing with text-critical issues, this work challenges the thesis that the text is military propaganda through the use of narrative and historical approaches. The analyses, besides proposing a new way of a studying an apocalypse, spell out the peculiarity and the significance of the theology of the Animal Apocalypse in connection with the biblical history of Israel and the theology of the Qumran community.

Book excerpt: 'the oldest biography of Spinoza', La Vie de Mr. Spinosa, which in the manuscript copies is often followed by L'Esprit de M. Spinosa. Margaret Jacob, in her Radical Enlightenment, contended that the Traite was written by a radical group of Freemasons in The Hague in the early eighteenth century. Silvia Berti has offered evidence it was written by Jan Vroesen. Various discussions in the early eighteenth century consider many possi ble authors from the Renaissance onwards to whom the work might be attributed. The Trois imposteurs has attracted quite a bit of recent attention as one of the most significant irreligious clandestine writings available in the Enlightenment, which is most important for understanding the develop ment of religious scepticism, radical deism, and even atheism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Scholars for the last couple of decades have been trying to assess when the work was actually written or compiled and by whom. In view of the widespread distribution of manu scripts of the work all over Europe, they have also been seeking to find out who was influenced by the work, and what it represented for its time. Hitherto unknown manuscripts are being turned up in public and private libraries all over Europe and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ,,The enamel pictures of the Hungarian Saint Crown" mark the pick of the successful painter's carrier of Éva Nyáry. Her uncle, Ernest Nyáry,Archbishop of Baghdad inspired the paintings of equal size, representing the pictures decorating the crown of our first king, Saint Stephan's, presented with national and international recognition to the interested public. the artist published the birth of the art pieces and the spirit and history of the crown in a work published with the similar title in 2002. She took the pen in 2006 and composed her following book entitled the Ancient Hungarian decorative art. Mgr. Ernest Nyáry, Carmelite monk, archbishop of the Catholic Latin mission of Baghdad, a member of the Saint Congregation of the Oriental Churches, awarded with the French Legion of Honor, approaching the age of 80 came to see his disciples, parents and friends living in Hungary for the last time, and than he transmitted his legacy in full to his brother Joseph's daughter, confiding her to preserve and manage it. Her father told many stories to Éva Nyáry about the romantic priest's carrier in her childhood. the several long meeting with him in the eighties meant her extraordinary impressions. the recorded conversations, the writings published about the noble thinking, sainted monk, matured the conception to share her impressions with readers. When she was handed over his diaries, texts, correspondence, photos and recorded memories, having his uncle's complete confidence, she has already felt as an obligation to work this fantastic treasury up. Ernest Nyáry's history of life who was born in an ancient Hungarian noble family in Turcansky Peter, today Slovakia in 1906, evolved in the priest's vocation, bridging world wars and continents--served as a lesson about faith, tolerance, decisions made in critical moments, and especially about humanity. Éva Nyáry's newest work follows her uncle's fantastic life relying on the documents at her disposal, many original quotations, and contemporary descriptions with historic fidelity. the unordinary story is completed by the archive photos of the legacy.
