It is based on the detailed sequential analysis of audio recordings of conference discussions in the field of the humanities, the working languages being French and English. The analyses show that the delegates who actively participate in these interactions, whether as presenters, chairpersons or as members of the audience, carry out a considerable amount of identity work, attributing self and other to various categories of professional identity. The discussion participants co-construct themselves and each other discursively as academics, professionals, experts, junior or senior members of the scientific community; they also orient to this identity work as an important task to be achieved at conferences. This study provides detailed insights into the fine-grained mechanics of spoken academic discourse. From the perspective of applied research it serves the double purpose of raising experienced researchers’ awareness of their own routines and introducing novices to the discourse practices of academia.

Book excerpt: Cette étude vise à déterminer les caractéristiques génériques, à la fois linguistiques et discursives, de la communication scientifique orale de recherche. Dans ce but, nous avons constitué et transcrit un corpus composé d'enregistrements vidéo de 90 communications orales faites en anglais lors de congrès scientifiques internationaux en 1993-1994 dans trois domaines : géologie, médecine et physique (30 communications par domaine, équiréparties entre locuteurs anglophones et non-anglophones), ainsi qu'un corpus comparatif d'articles publiés dans les actes en physique. Trois variables sont isolées : le mode (oral/écrit), le domaine scientifique, et l'origine linguistique de l'orateur (anglophone/non-anglophone). La démarche est ethnographique et constructiviste. L'analyse informatisée montre que la communication scientifique orale présente des caractéristiques linguistiques fort différentes de celles de l'article de recherche. L'incidence de la variable modale s'avère déterminante, mais certaines caractéristiques sont fonction des deux autres variables. L'analyse discursive révèle deux caractéristiques clé de ce 'genre' : la nature de l'assertion avancée, et l'importance de la communication visuelle. La place de la communication orale dans la construction des faits scientifiques, et le rôle de la phase discussion, nous conduit à assigner le statut de 'proto-assertion' aux assertions avancées dans ce genre. Une quadruple typologie des visuels - la pyramide scriptovisuelle - est proposée, et la spécificité visuelle de chaque domaine dégagée. L'analyse de l'enchainement typologique des visuels dans chaque domaine révèle l'existence d'une argumentation et d'une hiérarchie visuelles. Book excerpt: This volume provides a generic description, based on a formal analysis of narrative structures, of the Middle English noncyclic verse romances. As a group, these poems have long resisted generic definition and are traditionally considered to be a conglomerate of unrelated tales held together in a historical matrix of similar themes and characters. As single narratives, they are thought of as random collections of events loosely structured in chronological succession. Susan Wittig, however, offers evidence that the romances are carefully ordered (although not always consciously so) according to a series of formulaic patterns and that their structures serve as vehicles for certain essential cultural patterns and are important to the preservation of some community-held beliefs. The analysis begins on a stylistic level, and the same theoretical principles applied to the linguistic formulas of the poems also serve as a model for the study of narrative structures. The author finds that there are laws that govern the creation, selection, and arrangement of narrative materials in the romance genre and that act to restrict innovation and control the narrative form. The reasons for this strict control are to be found in the functional relationship of the genre to the culture that produced it. The deep structure of the romance is viewed as a problem-solving pattern that enables the community to mediate important contradictions within its social, economic, and mythic structures. Wittig speculates that these contradictions may lie in the social structures of kinship and marriage and that they have been restructured in the narratives in a “practical” myth: the concept of power gained through the marriage alliance, and the reconciliation of the contradictory notions of marriage for power’s sake and marriage for love’s sake. This advanced, thorough, and completely original study will be valuable to medieval specialists, classicists, linguists, folklorists, and Biblical scholars working in oral-formulaic narrative structure.
