But Grace Park and Shawn Matthews have their own problems. Grace is sheltered and largely oblivious, living in the Valley with her Korean-immigrant parents, working long hours at the family pharmacy. She’s distraught that her sister hasn’t spoken to their mother in two years, for reasons beyond Grace’s understanding. Shawn has already had enough of politics and protest after an act of violence shattered his family years ago. He just wants to be left alone to enjoy his quiet life in Palmdale. But when another shocking crime hits LA, both the Park and Matthews families are forced to face down their history while navigating the tumult of a city on the brink of more violence.

Book Synopsis Children’s Literature in Translation by : Jan Van Coillie
Download or read book Children’s Literature in Translation written by Jan Van Coillie and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many of us, our earliest and most meaningful experiences with literature occur through the medium of a translated children’s book. This volume focuses on the complex interplay that happens between text and context when works of children’s literature are translated: what contexts of production and reception account for how translated children’s books come to be made and read as they are? How are translated children’s books adapted to suit the context of a new culture? Spanning the disciplines of Children’s Literature Studies and Translation Studies, this book brings together established and emerging voices to provide an overview of the analytical, empirical and geographic richness of current research in this field and to identify and reflect on common insights, analytical perspectives and trajectories for future interdisciplinary research. This volume will appeal to an interdisciplinary audience of scholars and students in Translation Studies and Children’s Literature Studies and related disciplines. It has a broad geographic and cultural scope, with contributions dealing with translated children’s literature in the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, Spain, France, Brazil, Poland, Slovenia, Hungary, China, the former Yugoslavia, Sweden, Germany, and Belgium.

Download or read book The Corona Lie - Unmasked written by Hermann von Bering and published by Tredition Gmbh. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to examine the Corona phenomenon in its entirety and uncovers plenty of contradictions. A wealth of information is substantiated with hundreds of sources and raises doubts about the official account of the virus, the disease and the sense of the measures. The political background responsible for the economic decline is revealed. The book answers important questions such as: Can the PCR test detect infections at all? Why do the statistics show far too high case numbers? How dangerous is the virus really? What did the alledged "corona" dead die of? What are the problems of wearing masks? Why lockdowns and spacing rules cannot stop the virus? Why are the new vaccinations hazardous? Who planned and profits from the global crisis? What is the objective? What is happening to the freedom of speech and democracy? Why the fundamental rights are being abolished? The book reveals the secret agenda behind the corona crisis. From thousands of documents, the author has researched the evidence that is hidden by the media. It presents the facts in a way that is easy to understand for everybody. Despite scientific explanations, the book reads easily because the author knows how to lighten up the complex topic with ironic comments.
Book Synopsis Children's Literature in Translation by : Jan Van Coillie
Download or read book Children's Literature in Translation written by Jan Van Coillie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's classics from Alice in Wonderland to the works of Astrid Lindgren, Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman are now generally recognized as literary achievements that from a translator's point of view are no less demanding than 'serious' (adult) literature. This volume attempts to explore the various challenges posed by the translation of children's literature and at the same time highlight some of the strategies that translators can and do follow when facing these challenges. A variety of translation theories and concepts are put to critical use, including Even-Zohar's polysystem theory, Toury's concept of norms, Venuti's views on foreignizing and domesticating translations and on the translator's (in)visibility, and Chesterman's prototypical approach. Topics include the ethics of translating for children, the importance of child(hood) images, the 'revelation' of the translator in prefaces, the role of translated children's books in the establishment of literary canons, the status of translations in the former East Germany; questions of taboo and censorship in the translation of adolescent novels, the collision of norms in different translations of a Swedish children's classic, the handling of 'cultural intertextuality' in the Spanish translations of contemporary British fantasy books, strategies for translating cultural markers such as juvenile expressions, functional shifts caused by different translation strategies dealing with character names, and complex translation strategies used in dealing with the dual audience in Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales and in Salman Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories.
Book Synopsis The Making of Middle Indonesia by : Gerry Klinken
Download or read book The Making of Middle Indonesia written by Gerry Klinken and published by Brill Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What holds Indonesia together? 'A strong leader' is the answer most often given. This book looks instead at a middle level of society. Middle classes in provincial towns around the vast archipelago mediate between the state and society and help to constitute state power. 'Middle Indonesia' is a social zone connecting extremes. This book examines the rise of an indigenous middle class in one provincial town far removed from the capital city. Spanning the late colonial to early New Order periods, it develops an unusual, associational notion of political power. 'Soft' modalities of power included non-elite provincial people in the emerging Indonesian state. At the same time, growing inequalities produced class tensions that exploded in violence in 1965-1966.
