Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brown of Moukden: A Story of the Russo-Japanese War My dear Raymond, Last year I wove a romance about the early incidents of the great war now happily at an end; this year I have chosen its later incidents as the background for my heroes adventures. But while in "Kobo" the struggle was viewed from the Japanese stand-pointy in "Brown of Moukden" (which is in no sense a sequel) you will find yourself among the Russians looking at the other side of the shield. It is not the romancer's business to be a partisan; and we British people were at firsts perhaps a little blind to the fact that the bravery the endurance the heroism have not been all on the one side. As a boy preparing for the Navy, you would have liked I dare say, to see jack Brown in the thick of the great naval battle, at Tsushima. But I had three reasons for giving no space to that famous victory. First, jack could not possibly have seen it. Secondly, sea-fights had a very good turn in "Kobo." Thirdly, I hope some day to give you sea-dogs a whole book to yourselves - but that, as Mr. Kipling somewhere says, will be another story. Meanwhile, if you get half as much fun in reading this book as I have had in writing it, I shall count myself very lucky indeed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russo-Japanese Conflict: Its Causes and Issues The issues of the conflict that forms the topic of this little volume are bound inevitably to influence the future of the civilized world for many years. Dr. Asakawa presents them with a logical thoroughness that reminds us of the military operations of his countrymen now in evidence elsewhere, and recalls very pleasantly to my own mind the sane and accurate character of his scholastic work while a student at Yale. It is the sort of presentation which a great subject needs. It is content with a simple statement of fact and inference. It is convincing because of its brevity and restraint. The generous and almost passionate sympathy of our countrymen for Japan in this crisis of her career has aroused some speculation and surprise even amongst ourselves. The emotion is, doubtless, the outcome of complex causes, but this much is obvious at present: the past half-century has brought both America and Japan through experiences strikingly similar, and their establishment at the same moment as new world Powers has afforded both the same view of their older competitors for first rank among nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Navy in the Russo-Japanese War In translating this work I have endeavoured to do justice both to the author and to the British Public. I have kept to the author's text as much as possible, and though he has said many things about my country, which I as an Englishman do not agree with, I have, nevertheless, translated the bare, unpolished statements in order that my countrymen may know what is being said about them. In one of his letters to me, Captain Klado frankly acknowledges that his writings may not be agreeable reading for an Englishman, but expresses the opinion that in a free country one ought to hear all the critics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cavalry in the Russo-Japanese War: Lessons and Critical Considerations Though the literature of the late campaign, in a general way, already shows quite a considerable library, in its purely cavalry branch it is still very badly provided for. This is a decided neglect which, according to our idea, in the interests of the future of cavalry, should be redressed as soon as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russo-Japanese War From the Outbreak of Hostilities to the Battle of Liaoyang But the glacier at last comes to a point where it breaks up; and it is not in the Japanese character to submit, but rather to die fighting, or choose suicide, if there is no hope whatever. The watchword of modern Japan is Defence - self-preservation, or a fight to the death if there is no other way. This has been made especially plain since 1895, but it was no secret prior to that - in fact, through all the lifetime of the re awakened nation. She had felt that the whole world was against her in the first days of her unwilling acquaintance with it. The ancient Japan was rudely put out of existence by the Allied Powers, and a new born nation was forced into the world at the point of the bayonet. The whole of her young life was darkened by the shadow of the Foreign Peril until after the allied forces withdrew, and then arose instead the Russian Peril, year by year pressing more closely. Each new move was a new menace. The climax came in 1891, when the huge Siberian Railway scheme was announced. Russia openly declared her determination to dominate the Far East Japan sternly, desperately, resolved not to be dominated. In effect, the war of 1904 was declared in 1891. Book excerpt: It is now nearly ten years since, on one of the bridges in Osaka, I watched a battalion of the Imperial Guards marching to the China war. The Chinese had been driven across the Yalu and hustled through Manchuria; the Guards were to assist in carrying the war, if necessary, to the walls of Pekin. There was something in the bearing of those short, sturdy, alert little soldiers to arrest the attention and give food for thought. They had all the purposeful air of our own Gurkhas, with a look of keener intelligence, and a joyous eagerness that thrilled the observer. In the China war the Japanese were for the first time measuring their strength. It was merely practice for the great struggle with the Colossus of the North which all knew to be inevitable, however long delayed. The humbling of China cost Japan little real effort, and we in this country hardly realized all that was at stake when European diplomacy robbed the victor of the fruits of victory. The part of Great Britain at that period was regarded, perhaps justly, by the Japanese as something less than that of the warm friend and well-wisher she was supposed to be. Yet, in common with other English visitors to their country, I never met with aught but perfect courtesy and smiling hospitality. The politeness and self-restraint of the people, and their extraordinary military promise, were among my strongest impressions of Japan. How completely they have been justified the history of the past ten years and of the present struggle has shown.
