Book excerpt: "Family planning policy, or the commonly called "one-child policy", introduced in 1978 and officially applied in 1979, is the one-child limitation imposed on the population of the People's Republic of China. It officially restricts married, urban couples to having only one child, while allowing exemptions in several cases, including rural couples, ethnic minorities, and parents who have no siblings. The one-child policy was created by the Chinese government to alleviate social, economic, and environmental problems, but the policy itself and the manner in which the policy has been implemented can be against humanity, and it is controversial because it has been implicated in negative social consequences. China, like many other Asian countries, has a long tradition of son preference because only sons carry the family name and are responsible for continuing the bloodline. This tradition, coupled with the one-child policy, has resulted in an increase in forced abortions, female infanticide, underreporting of female births, and the imbalance of the sex ration: more men than women. This thesis contains narrative and oral history of 12 interviewees including single children, people with siblings, parents who have tried in many ways to have more than one child, mothers who were forced to have abortions, and government officials. This thesis would not only document the one-child policy but also uncover the role it has played in the lives of Chinese citizens.
