Book excerpt: The Street Kids is the most important novel by Italy's preeminent late-20th Century author and intellectual, Pier Paolo Pasolini. A powerful, groundbreaking contemporary classic, The Street Kids is now available in a new translation by Ann Goldstein, translator of Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels. Set in Rome during the post-war years, the Rome of the "borgate," outlying neighborhoods beset by poverty and deprivation, The Street Kids tells the story of a group of adolescents belonging to the urban underclass. Living hand-to-mouth, Riccetto and his friends eek out an existence doing odd jobs, committing petty crimes and prostituting themselves. Rooted in the neorealist movement of the 1950s, The Street Kids is a tender, heart-rending tribute to an entire social class in danger of being forgotten. Pasolini's novel was heavily censored, criticized by professional critics, and lambasted by much of the general public upon its publication. But its undeniable force and vitality eventually led to it being universally acknowledged as a masterpiece.

Book excerpt: Street outreach workers comb public places such as parks, vacant lots, and abandoned waterfronts to search for young people who are living out in public spaces, if not always in the public eye. Street Kids opens a window to the largely hidden world of street youth, drawing on their detailed and compelling narratives to give new insight into the experiences of youth homelessness and youth outreach. Kristina Gibson argues that the enforcement of quality of life ordinances in New York City has spurred hyper-mobility amongst the city’s street youth population and has serious implications for social work with homeless youth. Youth in motion have become socially invisible and marginalized from public spaces where social workers traditionally contact them, jeopardizing their access to the already limited opportunities to escape street life. The culmination of a multi-year ethnographic investigation into the lives of street outreach workers and ‘their kids’ on the streets of New York City, Street Kids illustrates the critical role that public space regulations and policing play in shaping the experience of youth homelessness and the effectiveness of street outreach.

Their collective experiences in all facets of life far surpass what an individual is capable of learning alone. It is also fair to say that one can learn something from every living creature. Sometimes it is an obvious lesson but more often it is not! All information is acquired from others but the lessons that you are prepared to learn from that association is what matters. Life does not have to be so difficult! Street Smart Kids is offering you a chance to experience a more fulfilling, less stressful life experience, starting right now! With nothing to lose, enjoy these thought provoking chapters. Share a few of the messages with someone that is dear to you...or perhaps could or should be. With what today's current generation of preteens, teenagers, young adults, parents, coaches, mentors and teachers have to deal with, just one good idea put into practice can change the course of a life or two. Problems that can't be solved with resources are best solved by prevention, made possible by the implementation of objectivity, common sense and logic. This book is loaded with real life experiences aimed at preventing more than a few hard knocks.

When Dylan's farm is snatched away by a huge global company, he can't just sit back and watch. But the journey to rescue his home takes him deep into the heart of the Amazon. With Floyd, a friend he's not sure of, and Lucia, a street kid armed with a thesaurus and a Great Dane puppy, he uncovers dark and dangerous secrets, and learns some surprising truths. 'Wow! What a book! It's riveting, it's moving, it's topical, it's superb! ... superb writing, brilliant characters, a glorious adventure and the warmest of heart. Amazing!' Malachy Doyle 'Emma Rea has written a beautifully researched adventure which encompasses the Welsh countryside and the Amazon. The unfolding friendship between Welsh Dylan and Brazilian Lucia is fabulous, and the clever plot sweeps along like a boat in a current.' Sue Wallman 'When nature-loving Dylan, 12, discovers his family farm in Wales (beautifully evoked) is being bought by a conglomerate based in Brazil, he plans to go there secretly to plead for the purchase to be abandoned ...This is the kind of adventure everyone likes to imagine when young, about being ingenious and brave and outwitting adults.' Nicolette Jones, Sunday Times Children's Book of the Week ' My Name is River... is a fantastically original adventure about a boy whose idyllic Welsh home is bought by an evil corporation. Desperate to save it, he travels from Birmingham to Brazil with his best friend. Rea's flight of imagination has two sympathetic heroes risking everything while lying their heads off. Packed with ecological indignation, it is both funny and timely.' Amanda Craig, New Statesman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Kids on the Street Joseph Plaster explores the informal support networks that enabled abandoned and runaway queer youth to survive in tenderloin districts across the United States. Tracing the history of the downtown lodging house districts where marginally housed youth regularly lived beginning in the late 1800s, Plaster focuses on San Francisco’s Tenderloin from the 1950s to the present. He draws on archival, ethnographic, oral history, and public humanities research to outline the queer kinship networks, religious practices, performative storytelling, and migratory patterns that allowed these kids to foster social support and mutual aid. He shows how they collectively and creatively managed the social trauma they experienced, in part by building relationships with johns, bartenders, hotel managers, bouncers, and other vice district denizens. By highlighting a politics where the marginal position of street kids is the basis for a moral economy of reciprocity, Plaster excavates a history of queer life that has been overshadowed by major narratives of gay progress and pride.
