The result was a stagnation of the Opéra's repertory, and beneficiaries were the composers of larger-scale works for competing organisations: the Opéra Comique and the Théâtre Lyrique.

But this flawed form of development is now coming to an end, as the emerging economies of Asia and Africa begin to assert themselves on the world stage.
