Book excerpt: There are more books written about the Keweenaw, or set in the Keweenaw, than most regions ten times its size and with a hundred times, or a thousand times, as many people. Something about the Keweenaw Peninsula evokes emotions that need to be put to paper. The history is rich, the people strong, and the land both beautiful and unpredictable. This magazine series explores all this and more, in full color! You may find your ancestors, or a story that you heard as a child - some true, some not so much -- and along the way you'll get to know just a little better a land which in many ways defies description -- yet everyone keeps trying! (The first four issues of this series were previously titled Calumet History Magazine.)

Book excerpt: There was a time when the Keweenaw Peninsula and the surrounding areas, known as the Copper Country, produced 90% of the world's copper. It wasn't just that tere was so much copper in the Keweenaw -- in fact, although it exists in massive amounts it was difficult to find and even harder and more expensive to produce -- but that Keweenaw Copper was the purest to be found anywhere. The history of the Keweenaw must include the history of copper, and vice verse; and while the heyday of copper may be over, the stories and the rich history remains. The Keweenaw is not merely about copper, however. In this land you'll find beautiful shores, breaktaking forests, fascinating wildlife...and of course some of the most unique characters in the world. There's a reason that more books are written about the Keweenaw that areas many time sitys size and with much larger population . . . and whether it is in the photos or the words or the people, you'll find it is all about color! (This magazine was previously titles Calumet History Magazine. It contains original material, public domain material, and material previously published elsewhere by Calumet History and Hobby.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the years 1840-1875, Beyond the Boundaries focuses on the settlement of Upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, telling the story of reluctant pioneers who attempted to establish a decent measure of comfort, control, and security in what was in many ways a hostile environment. Moving beyond the technological history of the period found in his previous book Cradle to the Grave: Life, Work, and Death at the Lake Superior Copper Mines (OUP 1991), Lankton here focuses on the people of this region and how the copper mining affected their daily lives. A truly first-rate social history, Beyond the Boundaries will appeal to historians of the frontier and of Michigan and the Great Lakes region, as well as historians of technology, labor, and everyday life.

Book excerpt: Concentrating on technology, economics, labor, and social history, Cradle to Grave documents the full life cycle of one of America's great mineral ranges from the 1840s to the 1960s. Lankton examines the workers' world underground, but is equally concerned with the mining communities on the surface. For the first fifty years of development, these mining communities remained remarkably harmonious, even while new, large companies obliterated traditional forms of organization and work within the industry. By 1890, however, the Lake Superior copper industry of upper Michigan started facing many challenges, including strong economic competition and a declining profit margin; growing worker dissatisfaction with both living and working conditions; and erosion of the companies' hegemony in a district they once controlled. Lankton traces technological changes within the mines and provides a thorough investigation of mine accidents and safety. He then focuses on social and labor history, dealing especially with the issue of how company paternalism exerted social control over the work force. A social history of technology, Cradle to Grave will appeal to labor, social and business historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the largest Michigan county with land and water combined, Keweenaw County is also the most sparsely populatedat least during the vicious winters. The population blooms in the summertime when seasonal residents come in droves to enjoy their little slice of heaven. The county was formed in 1861 as an offshoot of Houghton County and now encompasses the top half of the Keweenaw Peninsula, where Michigans Upper Peninsula juts north into Lake Superior. Throughout the 1800s, the area was at the center of the copper mining boom, spurring construction of Fort Wilkins in Copper Harbor. The military outpost served to keep order among miners and the areas native inhabitants, the Ojibwa. Moving through time, Keweenaw County would also serve as a hub for the maritime, fishing, and lumbering industries before becoming the resort community it is today.
