Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Soviets launched Sputnik in 1957, thousands of ordinary people across the globe seized the opportunity to participate in the start of the Space Age. Known as the "Moonwatchers," these largely forgotten citizen-scientists helped professional astronomers by providing critical and otherwise unavailable information about the first satellites. In Keep Watching the Skies!, Patrick McCray tells the story of this network of pioneers who, fueled by civic pride and exhilarated by space exploration, took part in the twentieth century's biggest scientific endeavor. Around the world, thousands of teenagers, homemakers, teachers, amateur astronomers, and other citizens joined Moonwatch teams. Despite their diverse backgrounds and nationalities, they shared a remarkable faith in the transformative power of science--a faith inspired by the Cold War culture in which they lived. Against the backdrop of the space race and technological advancement, ordinary people developed an unprecedented desire to contribute to scientific knowledge and to investigate their place in the cosmos. Using homemade telescopes and other gadgets, Moonwatchers witnessed firsthand the astonishing beginning of the Space Age. In the process, these amateur scientists organized themselves into a worldwide network of satellite spotters that still exists today. Drawing on previously unexamined letters, photos, scrapbooks, and interviews, Keep Watching the Skies! recreates a pivotal event from a perspective never before examined--that of ordinary people who leaped at a chance to take part in the excitement of space exploration.

Book excerpt: Relive and thrill to the science fiction movies of the '50s (through 1962), when jujubes and popcorn with extra butter went arm and arm with mad women (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman), weird teenagers (I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, Teenage Zombies), ill-fated matches (I Married a Monster from Outer Space), victims of scientific experiments (The Fly), and all those things that kept dropping in from outer space (The Blob, The Brain Eaters). As Warren meticulously and unfailingly points out, special effects were infantile ("They fall into a huge spider web which strongly resembles a cargo net," Earth vs. The Spider), budgets incredibly small ("As Jack Moffitt noted, 'the giant spaceman must be a fugitive from medieval France since, on his chest, he wears a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis. On his back, is an Assyrian bull, indicating he may have had his cleaning, pressing and mending done in Babylon'," Attack of the 50 Foot Woman). From The Astounding She-Monster, another small budget reminder: "In the first day of filming, the She-Monster bent over to kill one of the characters and ripped (her) suit in the back ... so in all subsequent scenes, the She-Monster makes exits and entrances facing the camera. Of course, this means she is walking backward much of the time, but aliens are weird." The book is filled with witty, fanatically in-depth critiques, with insider anecdotes. In addition to detailed plot synopses and production data, Warren cites good and bad reviews from the period, then adds his own analysis of how the film stands up after two or three decades. Credits add to and correct other published sources. Fantastic photographs, drawings, appendices and index are included.

Book excerpt: Cult Films: Taboo and Transgression looks at nine decades of cult films history within American culture. By highlighting three films per decade including a brief summary of the decade's identity and sensibility, the book investigates the quality, ironies, and spirit of cult film evolution. The twenty-seven films selected for this study are analyzed for story content and in their respective transgressions regarding social, aesthetic, and political codes. Characteristic of this book is the notion that many exciting genres make up cult films-including horror, sci-fi, fantasy, film noir, and black comedy. Further, the book reaches out to several foreign film directors over the decades in order to view cult films as an intentional art form. Political and ideological controversies are covered; arresting back-story details that lend perspective on a film fill out the analysis and the historic framework for many film titles. The book, by emphasizing the condensed survey over decades and by choosing outstanding titles, differs from other general studies on cult films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, numerous “atomic narratives”—books, newspapers, magazines, textbooks, movies, and television programs—addressed the implications of the bomb. Post–World War II youth encountered atomic narratives in their daily lives at school, at home and in their communities, and were profoundly affected by what they read and saw. This multidisciplinary study examines the exposure of American youth to atomic narratives during the ten years following World War II. In addition, it examines the broader “social narrative of the atom,” which included educational, social, cultural, and political activities that surrounded and involved American youth. The activities ranged from school and community programs to movies and television shows to government-sponsored traveling exhibits on atomic energy. The book also presents numerous examples of writings by postwar adolescents, who clearly expressed their conflicted feelings about growing up in such a tumultuous time, and shows how many of the issues commonly associated with the sixties generation, such as peace, fellowship, free expression, and environmental concern, can be traced to this earlier generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between March and September of 1951, three very different films launched a new Hollywood genre, the alien invasion feature, defining our cultural expectations for extraterrestrial contact in the process. Where The Thing from Another World gives us the first movie monster capable of total human annihilation, The Day the Earth Stood Still provides a messianic messenger who unmasks our own destructive potential. And then there is The Man from Planet X, whose ambiguous alien may have gotten some clandestine design help from the C.I.A. Invasion ‘51 charts the historical and cinematic context for these films, and analyzes each from several angles including their symbolism, messaging, legacies and cultural impacts. Through intensive research, the book resolves mysteries and corrects misconceptions as well. Why did Hollywood switch from mad scientists to scientist heros in the ‘50s? Were Howard Hawks’ jokes simple punchlines or was there something else going on? Did Frank Lloyd Wright have a hand in designing Klaatu’s spaceship? Why does the description of the Planet X spacecraft differ from its appearance on screen? ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Like many readers of this book, Sean Kotz’s love of classic horror and science fiction began as a child and never dissipated. He is a writer, researcher, documentary filmmaker and educator from Virginia. He has taught film, literature and writing at Virginia Tech and Radford University, where he currently teaches genre film courses.

Discusses the various divisions and feuds within the movement, its evolution through the decades, and its relation to believers' beliefs about the government, military, and other aspects of society. With great difficulty, our Space Force establishes bases on the two Martian moons, and also on the surface of the Red Planet. But a series of firefights demonstrate that the aliens hold the upper hand, and that communication between the species is the only thing that will keep our bases from being exterminated. Alex Smith once again must step forward, and offer himself as part-prisoner, guest, interpreter, guinea pig, negotiator, and--ultimately--the last, best hope of mankind. But finding any consistent and understandable method of communication with a truly alien race is almost impossible. Can the gulf be breached in time? War of Two Worlds, Book Two.

A complete filmography provides a concise summary of each film discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vivid images of the apocalypse proliferate throughout contemporary cinema, which pictures the death of civilization in wildly different ways. Some films imagine a future where humanity is wiped out entirely, while others envision humans as an endangered species, enslaved by alien invaders or hunted by zombie hordes. This book provides a lively overview of apocalypse cinema, including alien invasions, nuclear annihilation, asteroid collisions, climate change, and terrifying plagues. Covering pivotal films from the silent era to the present day, including Metropolis, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Dr. Strangelove, Contagion, and Avengers: Endgame, Stephen Prince explores how these dark visions are rooted in religious and prophetic traditions, and he considers how our love for apocalypse cinema is tied to fundamental existential questions and anxieties that never go out of fashion.
