Book excerpt: In the study complex reactions, the simple space-time interpretation of pion interferometry often breaks down due to strong correlations between spatial and momentum coordinates. In those cases, pion interferometry is still useful as a complementary test of specific dynamic models, but a refined formalism must be used, as discussed in the introduction. With this formalism, we show that recent NA35 data on O + Au → ?−?− + X at 200 AGeV are consistent with both hadronic resonance and quark-gluon plasma models for this reaction. The sensitivity of the outward and sideward transverse projected correlation function for pions is investigated. Finally, we compare pion and kaon interferometry predictions of these two models. 31 refs., 3 figs.

Book excerpt: Inclusive pion, kaon, proton, and antiproton production from proton-proton collisions is studied at a variety of proton energies. Various available parameterizations of Lorentz-invariant differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity are compared with experimental data. The Badhwar and Alper parameterizations are moderately satisfactory for charged pion production. The Badhwar parameterization provides the best fit for charged kaon production. For proton production, the Alper parameterization is best, and for antiproton production the Carey parameterization works best. However, no parameterization is able to fully account for all the data. Book excerpt: In 1912 Victor Franz Hess made the revolutionary discovery that ionizing radiation is incident upon the Earth from outer space. He showed with ground-based and balloon-borne detectors that the intensity of the radiation did not change significantly between day and night. Consequently, the sun could not be regarded as the sources of this radiation and the question of its origin remained unanswered. Today, almost one hundred years later the question of the origin of the cosmic radiation still remains a mystery.Hess' discovery has given an enormous impetus to large areas of science, in particular to physics, and has played a major role in the formation of our current understanding of universal evolution. For example, the development of new fields of research such as elementary particle physics, modern astrophysics and cosmology are direct consequences of this discovery. Over the years the field of cosmic ray research has evolved in various directions: Firstly, the field of particle physics that was initiated by the discovery of many so-called elementary particles in the cosmic radiation. There is a strong trend from the accelerator physics community to reenter the field of cosmic ray physics, now under the name of astroparticle physics. Secondly, an important branch of cosmic ray physics that has rapidly evolved in conjunction with space exploration concerns the low energy portion of the cosmic ray spectrum. Thirdly, the branch of research that is concerned with the origin, acceleration and propagation of the cosmic radiation represents a great challenge for astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology. Presently very popular fields of research have rapidly evolved, such as high-energy gamma ray and neutrino astronomy. In addition, high-energy neutrino astronomy may soon initiate as a likely spin-off neutrino tomography of the Earth and thus open a unique new branch of geophysical research of the interior of the Earth. Finally, of considerable interest are the biological and medical aspects of the cosmic radiation because of it ionizing character and the inevitable irradiation to which we are exposed. This book is a reference manual for researchers and students of cosmic ray physics and associated fields and phenomena. It is not intended to be a tutorial. However, the book contains an adequate amount of background materials that its content should be useful to a broad community of scientists and professionals. The present book contains chiefly a data collection in compact form that covers the cosmic radiation in the vicinity of the Earth, in the Earth's atmosphere, at sea level and underground. Included are predominantly experimental but also theoretical data. In addition the book contains related data, definitions and important relations. The aim of this book is to offer the reader in a single volume a readily available comprehensive set of data that will save him the need of frequent time consuming literature searches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study pion production from high energy nuclear collisions by means of a simple statistical model. The shapes of the observed spectra exclude that all pions result from freely decaying delta resonances. Rather, they have to participate in kinetic equilibration processes. Finite particle number effects are found to be very important: equilibration does not occur globally but rather in groups of only a few particles. The pion production rates cannot be explained in terms of a chemical equilibrium.

Book excerpt: Here, transverse momentum (pT) spectra of pions, kaons, and protons up to pT = 20GeV/c have been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76TeV using the ALICE detector for six different centrality classes covering 0%-80%. The proton-to-pion and the kaon-to-pion ratios both show a distinct peak at pT ≈ 3GeV/c in central Pb-Pb collisions that decreases for more peripheral collisions. For pT > 10GeV/c, the nuclear modification factor is found to be the same for all three particle species in each centrality interval within systematic uncertainties of 10%-20%. This suggests there is no direct interplay between the energy loss in the medium and the particle species composition in the hard core of the quenched jet. For pT

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mid-rapidity transverse mass spectra and multiplicity densities of charged and neutral kaons are reported for Au+Au collisions at √s{sub NN}=130 GeV at RHIC. The spectra are exponential in transverse mass, with an inverse slope of about 280 MeV in central collisions. The multiplicity densities for these particles scale with the negative hadron pseudo-rapidity density. The charged kaon to pion ratios are K/?− = 0.161 ± 0.002(stat) ± 0.024(syst) and K−/?− = 0.146 ± 0.002(stat) ± 0.022(syst) for the most central collisions. The K+/?− ratio is lower than the same ratio observed at the SPS while the K−/?− is higher than the SPS result. Both ratios are enhanced by about 50% relative to p+p and {bar p}+p collision data at similar energies.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) was designed to explore the phase diagram of nuclear matter. In this document data collected using the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) during the BES program are used to study the production of pion (pi [superscript ±), kaon (K [superscript ±), and proton (p, p) across seven collision energies, [root s[subscript NN] = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27.0, 39.0, and 62.4 GeV. The results are presented differentially in nine centrality bins and over as broad a transverse mass and rapidity range as the detector capabilities allow. The yields of each particle species are first presented as transverse mass spectra. The spectra are then fit with spectral shapes to extract rapidity density distributions. Full phase space yields are also obtained for the case of the pion. These results help characterize the nature of the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. In particular, the dependence of the medium's chemistry, expansion properties, and thermal condition on collision energy, event centrality, and kinematic phase space are now accessible using the results of this study.
