Book excerpt: Kanji compounds (a combination of two or more Japanese characters) are an essential part of texts because they constitute the most common word structure in the Japanese written language. The emphasis on kanji compounds will bring definite benefits such as acquiring vocabulary and improving reading proficiency because they feature so dominantly in the writing system. Any reference to more abstract concepts will invariably involve the use of compounds and that means that anyone who wishes to go beyond "everyday language" will need to confront this linguistic challenge. Just like vocabulary in western languages, many Japanese character compounds are not transparent requiring a fair amount of rote learning and causing at times considerable frustration? Nonetheless, to focus on one singular character without considering compounds is arguably "unfinished business" because it shows only half of the story. It's like a bell without a clapper or a canvass without a brush: the rudiments are there but without the other components its potential will remain unfulfilled. There are three supplements in total that are part of the Kanji Alchemy series that include Jouyou kanji, Jinmeiyou kanji and Hyougaiji amounting to more than 6400 characters. To randomly list these thousands of characters would be a self-defeating exercise and will not be of much use to anyone. Kanji Alchemy highlights common aspects and similar elements with all characters cross-referenced and presented in a way that facilitates recognition and understanding. It is a consistent and rational approach to what otherwise would be a bewildering collection of non-related characters. In any event, the road to Japanese literacy might be long and tortuous but it is paved with kanji compounds!

Book excerpt: During the first half of the twentieth century, Zen Buddhist leaders contributed actively to Japanese imperialism, giving rise to what has been termed "Imperial-Way Zen" (Kodo Zen). Its foremost critic was priest, professor, and activist Ichikawa Hakugen (1902–1986), who spent the decades following Japan’s surrender almost single-handedly chronicling Zen’s support of Japan’s imperialist regime and pressing the issue of Buddhist war responsibility. Ichikawa focused his critique on the Zen approach to religious liberation, the political ramifications of Buddhist metaphysical constructs, the traditional collaboration between Buddhism and governments in East Asia, the philosophical system of Nishida Kitaro (1876–1945), and the vestiges of State Shinto in postwar Japan. Despite the importance of Ichikawa’s writings, this volume is the first by any scholar to outline his critique. In addition to detailing the actions and ideology of Imperial-Way Zen and Ichikawa’s ripostes to them, Christopher Ives offers his own reflections on Buddhist ethics in light of the phenomenon. He devotes chapters to outlining Buddhist nationalism from the 1868 Meiji Restoration to 1945 and summarizing Ichikawa’s arguments about the causes of Imperial-Way Zen. After assessing Brian Victoria’s claim that Imperial-Way Zen was caused by the traditional connection between Zen and the samurai, Ives presents his own argument that Imperial-Way Zen can best be understood as a modern instance of Buddhism’s traditional role as protector of the realm. Turning to postwar Japan, Ives examines the extent to which Zen leaders have reflected on their wartime political stances and started to construct a critical Zen social ethic. Finally, he considers the resources Zen might offer its contemporary leaders as they pursue what they themselves have identified as a pressing task: ensuring that henceforth Zen will avoid becoming embroiled in international adventurism and instead dedicate itself to the promotion of peace and human rights. Organised more as a workbook than a textbook, the objective is to select a radical that is the appropriate element for a character that only lists the English translation(s) and the Japanese readings. Although the number of radicals has been limited to 96, approximately 80% of Jouyou kanji has been covered whilst through clustering of orthographically similar kanji only 1/3 of Jouyou kanji (or about 700) new forms need to be learned. There are 12 chapters of which the last 2 chapters each share 3 units related to Complementary Characters. (Complementary Characters are kanji that in addition to a previously allocated radical can take a second one. This category has been separated from the main text and features in the last two chapters of this book.) Each of the remaining other chapters contain 7 units or weeks. This design makes it easy to start with small, self-contained units as each week has 7 days that can be studied individually. Each week contains 3 sections: in the first section the task is to select the appropriate radical for the kanji. This is followed by the Answer Key that features the kanji and their respective radicals and completed by the Practice section in which the character is shown in a kanji compound.
