This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. K. Laxman immortalised the common man in his cartoons. Prem Janmejay's protagonist Radhelal is very similar to him. Like the average Indian, he does not understand much about the game of cricket but feels sad when the Indian team loses an international match and cheers up when it emerges victorious. Through him the satirist depicts the absurdity of cricket mania among those who look at the game more as a status symbol than anything else. Through Radhelal, the satirist takes a critical look at many of the things that trouble society, the overpowering effect of social media being one of them. However, Radhelal is not the only protagonist of this selection. Janmejay is careful to retain variety and therefore introduces a number of characters so that the perspective remains varied and the reader moves from one article to another, without complaining of monotony. The author confines his interest to urban topics, his favourites being politics and corruption. The language is simple; humour is conveyed through puns and skilful use of language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of stories in Krishna’s Jaunt and Other Stories is a blend of fiction and fantasy. While most of them deal with human emotions and human reactions to different sets of circumstances and situations, quite a few deal with gods and goddesses who also, despite their supernatural powers, display human emotions and reactions. At times, they too commit blunders that lead to hilarious situations. Besides, the gods and goddesses take to sports like cricket and soccer, and a couple of stories are woven around them. Animals like the dog and the squirrel too find a place in the stories where they play vital roles in apprehending criminals. Amongst the stories, are a few involving men of high principles, and who are a role model for others. With romance being the main theme in most of them, and with humour interspersed here and there, the stories make for an interesting read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book portrays the world history in an entirely new landscape which highlights the pace of development of all the major civilizations of the world since the dawn of human history. Man's rational behavior compelled him to search and innovate new things in order to emerge victorious in his struggle for existence, and in the process, he elevated human civilization. But different civilizations developed on different lines. Some were fast initially but later turned static, and some were static initially but later gained momentum to become world leaders, while some were in between. The author has broadly categorizes all the world civilizations into seven segments and demonstrated their behavior of development graphically. Indian civilization has been evaluated as initially glorious and highly developed, but later it turned static due to several inherent factors. Anglo-Saxon civilization has been adjudged as initially primitive and after AD 1000 it began to move slowly and later gained pace to become world leader. It has been suggested in the book that Indians should learn from the Anglo-Saxons and should follow their road to development, which has been heavily propitiated with scientific and technological innovations and rational thinking since AD 1000.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book engages in a dialogue with Krishnachandra Bhattacharyya (K.C. Bhattacharyya, KCB, 1875–1949) and opens a vista to contemporary Indian philosophy. KCB is one of the founding fathers of contemporary Indian philosophy, a distinct genre of philosophy that draws both on classical Indian philosophical sources and on Western materials, old and new. His work offers both a new and different reading of classical Indian texts, and a unique commentary of Kant and Hegel. The book (re)introduces KCB’s philosophy, identifies the novelty of his thinking, and highlights different dimensions of his oeuvre, with special emphasis on freedom as a concept and striving, extending from the metaphysical to the political or the postcolonial. Our contributors aim to decipher KCB’s distinct vocabulary (demand, feeling, alternation). They revisit his discussion of Rasa aesthetics, spotlight the place of the body in his phenomenological inquiry toward “the subject as freedom”, situate him between classics (Abhinavagupta) and thinkers inspired by his thought (Daya Krishna), and discuss his lectures on Sāṃkhya and Yoga rather than projecting KCB as usual solely as a Vedānta scholar. Finally, the contributors seek to clarify if and how KCB’s philosophical work is relevant to the discourse today, from the problem of other minds to freedoms in the social and political spheres. This book will be of interest to academics studying Indian and comparative philosophy, philosophy of language and mind, phenomenology without borders, and political and postcolonial philosophy.

Book excerpt: This book is an English translation of the Sanskrit classic Play Abhijnan Shakuntalam by the great poet and Playwright Mahakavi Kalidas, written around 220 CE. The play is about the strange fate of Shakuntala, a simple, beautiful ascetic lady. King Dushyant meets her and falls in love with her. They get married. After some time, king Dushyant returns to his capital, assuring her that he would soon send for her. However, due to the curse by a wrathful sage, Durvasa, the king completely forgets about her. Humiliated, Shakuntala goes off into the forest to live by herself. In due course, she gives birth to a boy, whom she names Bharat. Fortuitously, following certain turns of events, Durvasas curse is removed, and the king remembers all about Shakuntala. He tries to find her, but of no avail. One day, he accidentally meets the young boy, Bharat, in the forest. The family is thus united and happily returns to the capital. Bharat grows up to become a great emperor. The original name of India is Bhaarat after his name. Rama, worshipped by Hindus all over the world as an Incarnation of God, was a descendent (some 6000-7000 years ago) of emperor Bharat.
