Book excerpt: The national folk epic of Finland is here presented in an English translation that is both scholarly and eminently readable. To avoid the imprecision and metrical monotony of earlier verse translations, Francis Magoun has used prose, printed line for line as in the original so that repetitions, parallelisms, and variations are readily apparent. The lyrical passages and poetic images, the wry humor, the tall-tale extravagance, and the homely realism of the Kalevala come through with extraordinary effectiveness.

It is within these pages that we uncover the fascinating origins, the transformative impact, and the enduring legacy of this epic tale. Kalevala, a work born out of Lonnrot’s tireless dedication to preserving Finnish folklore, emerged at a time when the nation was undergoing a profound cultural and national awakening. Lonnrot, a physician and a philologist, recognized the importance of collecting and documenting the oral traditions of the Finnish people, and he embarked on a remarkable mission to gather these fragments of ancient wisdom. In this preface, we delve into the historical and cultural context that gave rise to Kalevala. We explore the significance of the Finnish national identity and the role that folklore and mythology played in shaping that identity. We learn about the turbulent times of Finland's struggle for independence and how Kalevala became a symbol of cultural resilience and unity. The preface also unravels the process by which Lonnrot meticulously compiled and shaped the verses of Kalevala. We discover the countless journeys he undertook through the Finnish countryside, listening to the tales of the people, and meticulously piecing together the fragments of an epic that had been passed down through generations. It is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and unwavering belief in the power of storytelling. As we immerse ourselves in the preface, we come to understand the significance of Kalevala in the Finnish literary tradition. Tolkien’s unique and warm relationship to the Kalevala, a poem usually hailed as the Finnish and Karelian national epic, compiled, edited and partly revisioned from older folk poetry by Finnish scholar Elias Lönnrot in the 19th century. J. R. R. Tolkien, an Oxford academic and the greatest author of the 20th-century fantasy, creator of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was fascinated from early on by the Kalevala. Tolkien himself described the Kalevala as “a germ” of his fantasy fiction.
Book Synopsis Finnish Folk Poetry and the Kalevala by : Thomas A. DuBois
Download or read book Finnish Folk Poetry and the Kalevala written by Thomas A. DuBois and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its initial publication in the early nineteenth century, Elias Lonnrot’s Finnish epic Kalevala has attracted international interest and scholarship. However, the author comments that the distorting lenses of translation, cultural difference and historical distance, have rendered the work a cryptic and often misinterpreted text outside of its country of origin. Even within Finland, scholars have found it difficult at times to judge the relation of the Kalevala to its oral sources. Lonnrot’s meticulous notes and discussions of intent and accomplishment make clear what he changed and how he went about it, but give us less inkling of why. This study's view is that the key to understanding Lonnrot’s changes lies in Romantic aesthetics and in the intellectual and socio-political agendas which they encode. Lonnrot created a Romantic epic out of Baltic-Finnic folk poetry, an epic complete with the narrative, generic, gendered and political characteristics of literary epics in nineteenth century’ Europe.

This is a bold approach to Kalevala by an established talent – visually powerful and accessible. Download or read book The Kalevala. Volume I written by John Martin Crawford and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-29 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeper and more esoteric meaning of the Kalevala, however, points to a contest between Light and Darkness, Good and Evil; the Finns representing the Light and the Good, and the Lapps, the Darkness and the Evil. Like the Niebelungs, the heroes of the Finns woo for brides the beauteous maidens of the North; and the similarity is rendered still more striking by their frequent inroads into the country of the Lapps, in order to possess themselves of the envied treasure of Lapland, the mysterious Sampo, evidently the Golden Fleece of the Argonautic expedition. Curiously enough public opinion is often expressed in the runes, in the words of an infant; often too the unexpected is introduced after the manner of the Greek dramas, by a young child, or an old man.
