Book excerpt: 'One of the great mythic poems of Europe' The New York Times Sharing its title with the poetic name for Finland - 'the land of heroes' - Kalevala is the soaring epic poem of its people, a work rich in magic and myth which tells the story of a nation through the ages from the dawn of creation. Sung by rural Finns since prehistoric times, and formally compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the nineteenth century, it is a landmark of Finnish culture and played a vital role in galvanizing its national identity in the decades leading to independence. Its themes, however, reach beyond borders and search the heart of human existence. Translated with an Introduction by Eino Friberg

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE following translation was undertaken from a desire to lay before the English-speaking people the full treasury of epical beauty, folklore, and mythology comprised in The Kalevala (the Land of Heroes, the national epic of the Finns.) The Kalevala describes Finnish nature very minutely and very beautifully. Grimm says that no poem is to be compared with it in this respect. A deeper and more esoteric meaning of the Kalevala, however, points to a contest between Light and Darkness. The numerous myths of the poem are likewise full of significance and beauty, and the Kalevala should be read between the lines, in order that the full meaning of this great epic may be comprehended. The whole poem is replete with the most fascinating folk-lore about the mysteries of nature, the origin of things, the enigmas of human tears, and, true to the character of a national epic, it represents not only the poetry, but the entire wisdom and accumulated experience of a nation. One of the most notable characteristics of the Finnish mythology is the interdependence among the gods. The Finnish deities, like the ancient gods of Italy and Greece, are generally represented in pairs. They have their individual abodes and are surrounded by their respective families. The Sun and the Moon each have a consort, and sons and daughters. Only two sons of Paeivae appear in The Kalevala, one comes to aid of Wainamoinen in his efforts to destroy the mystic Fire-fish, by throwing from the heavens to the girdle of the hero, a "magic knife, silver-edged, and golden-handled;" the other son, Panu, the Fire-child, brings back to Kalevala the fire that bad been stolen by Louhi, the wicked hostess of Pohyola. 10% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.

Book excerpt: The national folk epic of Finland is here presented in an English translation that is both scholarly and eminently readable. To avoid the imprecision and metrical monotony of earlier verse translations, Francis Magoun has used prose, printed line for line as in the original so that repetitions, parallelisms, and variations are readily apparent. The lyrical passages and poetic images, the wry humor, the tall-tale extravagance, and the homely realism of the Kalevala come through with extraordinary effectiveness.

Book excerpt: In the preface of this edition of Kalevala, we embark on a journey of rediscovery—a journey that takes us back to 19th-century Finland and introduces us to the visionary mind of Elias Lonnrot. It is within these pages that we uncover the fascinating origins, the transformative impact, and the enduring legacy of this epic tale. Kalevala, a work born out of Lonnrot’s tireless dedication to preserving Finnish folklore, emerged at a time when the nation was undergoing a profound cultural and national awakening. Lonnrot, a physician and a philologist, recognized the importance of collecting and documenting the oral traditions of the Finnish people, and he embarked on a remarkable mission to gather these fragments of ancient wisdom. In this preface, we delve into the historical and cultural context that gave rise to Kalevala. We explore the significance of the Finnish national identity and the role that folklore and mythology played in shaping that identity. We learn about the turbulent times of Finland's struggle for independence and how Kalevala became a symbol of cultural resilience and unity. The preface also unravels the process by which Lonnrot meticulously compiled and shaped the verses of Kalevala. We discover the countless journeys he undertook through the Finnish countryside, listening to the tales of the people, and meticulously piecing together the fragments of an epic that had been passed down through generations. It is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and unwavering belief in the power of storytelling. As we immerse ourselves in the preface, we come to understand the significance of Kalevala in the Finnish literary tradition. Lonnrot’s work not only preserved the ancient tales but also breathed new life into them, transforming them into a coherent narrative that captured the imagination of readers. The preface offers insights into the structure, themes, and motifs that define Kalevala, and the ways in which it resonated with readers both within and beyond Finland's borders. Moreover, the preface highlights the impact of Kalevala on subsequent generations of writers, artists, and musicians. We explore the echoes of Kalevala in Finnish literature, where its themes and characters continue to inspire and influence. We learn about the musical compositions and operas that have been created in response to the epic, showcasing the enduring power of its verses to ignite the creative spirit. Lastly, the preface invites readers to embark on their own journey of discovery through the pages of Kalevala. It is an invitation to explore the beauty, wisdom, and magic that lie within these verses—to immerse oneself in the tales of heroes and deities, to witness the power of words and music, and to experience the profound connection between folklore, culture, and the human experience. As we delve into the preface, we open the gateway to a world of wonder, where ancient tales and timeless wisdom converge. Book Synopsis Finnish Folk Poetry and the Kalevala by : Thomas A. DuBois

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its initial publication in the early nineteenth century, Elias Lonnrot’s Finnish epic Kalevala has attracted international interest and scholarship. However, the author comments that the distorting lenses of translation, cultural difference and historical distance, have rendered the work a cryptic and often misinterpreted text outside of its country of origin. Even within Finland, scholars have found it difficult at times to judge the relation of the Kalevala to its oral sources. Lonnrot’s meticulous notes and discussions of intent and accomplishment make clear what he changed and how he went about it, but give us less inkling of why. This study's view is that the key to understanding Lonnrot’s changes lies in Romantic aesthetics and in the intellectual and socio-political agendas which they encode. Lonnrot created a Romantic epic out of Baltic-Finnic folk poetry, an epic complete with the narrative, generic, gendered and political characteristics of literary epics in nineteenth century’ Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeper and more esoteric meaning of the Kalevala, however, points to a contest between Light and Darkness, Good and Evil; the Finns representing the Light and the Good, and the Lapps, the Darkness and the Evil. Like the Niebelungs, the heroes of the Finns woo for brides the beauteous maidens of the North; and the similarity is rendered still more striking by their frequent inroads into the country of the Lapps, in order to possess themselves of the envied treasure of Lapland, the mysterious Sampo, evidently the Golden Fleece of the Argonautic expedition. Curiously enough public opinion is often expressed in the runes, in the words of an infant; often too the unexpected is introduced after the manner of the Greek dramas, by a young child, or an old man.
