Download or read book Adam Smith written by Ryan Patrick Hanley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Smith (1723–90) is perhaps best known as one of the first champions of the free market and is widely regarded as the founding father of capitalism. From his ideas about the promise and pitfalls of globalization to his steadfast belief in the preservation of human dignity, his work is as relevant today as it was in the eighteenth century. Here, Ryan Hanley brings together some of the world's finest scholars from across a variety of disciplines to offer new perspectives on Smith’s life, thought, and enduring legacy. Contributors provide succinct and accessible discussions of Smith’s landmark works and the historical context in which he wrote them, the core concepts of Smith’s social vision, and the lasting impact of Smith’s ideas in both academia and the broader world. They reveal other sides of Smith beyond the familiar portrayal of him as the author of the invisible hand, emphasizing his deep interests in such fields as rhetoric, ethics, and jurisprudence. Smith emerges not just as a champion of free markets but also as a thinker whose unique perspective encompasses broader commitments to virtue, justice, equality, and freedom. An essential introduction to Adam Smith’s life and work, this incisive and thought-provoking book features contributions from leading figures such as Nicholas Phillipson, Amartya Sen, and John C. Bogle. It demonstrates how Smith’s timeless insights speak to contemporary concerns such as growth in the developing world and the future of free trade, and how his influence extends to fields ranging from literature and philosophy to religion and law.

Book excerpt: Personal rights are such as can be claimed by a law-suit from a particular person, but not a quocumque possessore. Such are all debts and contracts, the payment or performance of which can be demanded only from one person. If I buy a horse and have him delivered to me, though the former owner sell him to another, I can claim him a quocumque possessore; but if he was not delivered to me I can only pursue the seller. Real rights are of four kinds, property, servitudes, pledges, and exclusive privileges.
Book Synopsis The Laws and Jurisprudence of England and America by : John F. Dillon
Download or read book The Laws and Jurisprudence of England and America written by John F. Dillon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws and Jurisprudence of England and America: Being a Series of Lectures Delivered Before Yale University Othing can be less ambitious than this vol ume. The introduction to the first lecture shows the circumstances under which the lectures were given, and the scope and purpose Of the course. I have, however, added some notes in the line of further development or illustration. It might have been more artistic to have recast the whole, working the notes into the text; but if this had been done, the loss would have exceeded the gain, since the lectures thus remodelled would not have been the lectures delivered, and they would moreover have contained details not adapted to oral discourses. Besides, it is a prized privi lege Of the teacher to make use of the first per son, as this enables him to address his hearers more directly and more forcibly than in any other way. It is Of set purpose, then, that I publish the lectures in their original form. They are just what they are, and just what they purport to be, and nothing more, - namely, discourses to a class Of law students, given largelyto inspire a patriotic and just regard for the laws and institutions of our country, to incite enthu siasm in the study Of the law rather than to im part technical instruction, to awaken inquiry rather than to satisfy it upon subjects Of vital moment to the profession lying somewhat outside Of the Ordinary legal curriculum. It is due to me and to the reader that the book be judged from this point Of View and no other. While it therefore disclaims any pretension to profound research or exhaustive treatment, as inconsistent with its main purpose, it deals, nevertheless, with the interest ing subjects Of legal education; trial by jury; the Origin, development, and characteristics Of the common law; written constitutions, legislation, case-law, the law reports, the doctrine Of judicial precedent, codification, and law reform.
