While allowing that the biomedical has its place in the treatment of disease, Dr. Kenneth Bakken argues persuasively that there are untapped resources for health and wholeness in Christian faith and practice. He invites the reader into the way of theosis, the transformation of the person in union with the divine. Opening the mystic heart of Christianity, The Journey into God gives individual Christians and the Christian communities of faith a trusty map for traversing the shifting spiritual terrain of health and wholeness issues in the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Soviet regime, millions of zeks (prisoners) were incarcerated in the forced labor camps, the Gulag. There many died of starvation, disease, and exhaustion, and some were killed by criminals and camp guards. In 1939, as the Nazis and Soviets invaded Poland, many Polish citizens found themselves swept up by the Soviet occupation and sent into the Gulag. One such victim was Julius Margolin, a Pinsk-born Jewish philosopher and writer living in Palestine who was in Poland on family matters. Margolin's Journey into the Land of the Zeks and Back offers a powerful, first-person account of one of the most shocking chapters of the violent twentieth century. Opening with the outbreak of World War II in Poland, Margolin relates its devastating impact on the Jews and his arrest and imprisonment in the Gulag system. During his incarceration from 1940 to 1945, he nearly died from starvation and overwork but was able to return to Western Europe and rejoin his family in Palestine. With a philosopher's astute analysis of man and society, as well as with humor, his memoir of flight, entrapment, and survival details the choices and dilemmas faced by an individual under extreme duress. Margolin's moving account illuminates universal issues of human rights under a totalitarian regime and ultimately the triumph of human dignity and decency. This translation by Stefani Hoffman is the first English-language edition of this classic work, originally written in Russian in 1947 and published in an abridged French version in 1949. Circulated in a Russian samizdat version in the USSR, it exerted considerable influence on the formation of the genre of Gulag memoirs and was eagerly read by Soviet dissidents. Timothy Snyder's foreword and Katherine Jolluck's introduction contextualize the creation of this remarkable account of a Jewish world ravaged in the Stalinist empire--and the life of the man who was determined to reveal the horrors of the gulag camps and the plight of the zeks to the world.

And unless he can remember what happened, the second expedition will fall victim to whatever decimated the first. It is a journey he does not wish to make-a journey into terror!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive volume, Dr. Kenneth L. Vaux explores the shared theological ground of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam-the common God, the common good, the common word, and the common work. Based on the premise that the three Abrahamic faiths are given by God for some purpose in God's universal history, Journey Into An Interfaith World traces the ways in which these faith movements flow together from and into each other in synergistic ways. At the same time, the book reveals how each fraternal faith has missed the mark in disassociating from its sibling traditions. Vaux's "journey" examines the spiritual genealogy shared by the three cognate faiths--from whom we come--as well as the mutual spiritual ontology--to whom we belong. "All three traditions echo the same refrain: 'Do we not belong to One God?'"

A groundbreaking preacher who, in 2000, became the first woman to serve as bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop McKenzie is renowned for her eloquence and passion in the pulpit. Now she brings her inspirational message to readers through the biblical story of the meeting at the well between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. In twelve lessons, McKenzie interweaves the Samaritan woman's experiences with contemporary personal stories, Bible quotations, life-affirming sayings, and meditational activities. Through them she shows women that if they hold onto hope and listen for their moments of epiphany, they can accomplish anything.

We can no longer maintain the belief in a strictly physical world composed of solid physical matter; our reality is much larger, more dynamic, and more malleable than that kind of substance would allow. In this book David Judd explores the evidence from quantum physics, academia and mysticism that is leading us to new understandings of ourselves and the world we live in. We have embarked on an exciting new journey that holds great promise for the future of humankind.

Book excerpt: In the age of scientific medicine we live long lives. But still most of us sooner or later face serious illnesses for which we seek cures. Nowadays we believe that curing comes about from a sharing of responsibilities by the medical specialist and the patient. Moreover we now realize that being sick is a social event. The scientific aspects of curing have been well described by the specialists. By comparison descriptions of illnesses as social events happening to individuals are rare. However the patient's contribution to the healing process may be crucial. And so Stroke! A Memoir gives a description from the patient's viewpoint of the healing process, written by the patient after he recovered.
