Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photostatic copies, probably from 1920-1936, of original ms. copies of Jonathan Carver's journals, describing his travels between May 1766 and July 1768, throughout the Great Lakes Regions, from Michillimackinac to the Mississippi River, and along the Wisconsin, Fox, St. Pierre, and Chippewa Rivers. Ten leaves of "survey journals" summarize different portions of Carver's trip, such as Detroit-Michilimackinac, Lake Michigan to Green Bay, up the Fox River, and along the Wisconsin River, including, in table form, the day, date, course, distance traveled in miles, and observations on the route. Entries describe the geography, exploration history, and flora and fauna of the area, and customs and religious practices of the Naudowessie, Saugies, Ottigaumies, Winnebagoes, Chippeways, and Menomonees. There is also a Naudowessie vocabulary list. The ms. concludes as Carver returns to Boston, via Detroit and Philadelphia in July 1768. Vol. 2 contains the same journal as v. 1, although in a more publishable form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would go through several editions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and be translated into French, German, Dutch, and Greek. Out of print for more than a hundred years, this influential work is once again available due to the efforts of historian Norman Gelb. Written in a charmingly unpretentious style, and illustrated with reproduction of the original map and copper plates appearing in the original 1778 edition, Carver's book offers a unique firsthand account of an American continent untouched by European influence. But above all, Carver's depictions of the Naudowessies, with whom he spent an entire winter and among whom he was to become an honorary chief, provides one of the first in-depth accounts of day-to-day life in a Native American culture.

Book excerpt: Karl Marx was the first theorist of global capitalism and remains perhaps its most trenchant critic. This clear and innovative book, from one of the leading contemporary experts on Marx's thought, gives us a fresh overview of his ideas by framing them within concepts that remain topical and alive today, from class struggle and progress to democracy and exploitation. Taking Marx's work in his pamphleteering, journalism, speeches, correspondence and published books as central to a renewed understanding of the man and his politics, this book brings both his life experience and our contemporary political engagements vividly to life. It shows us the many ways that a nineteenth-century thinker has been made into the 'Marx' we know today, beginning with his own self-presentations before moving on to the successive different "Marxes" that were later constructed: an icon of communist revolution, a demonic figure in the Cold War, a 'humanist' philosopher, and a spectre haunting Occupy Wall Street. Carver's accessible and lively book unpacks the historical, intellectual and political difficulties that make Marx sometimes difficult to read and understand, while also highlighting the distinct areas where his challenging writings speak directly to the twenty-first-century world. It will be essential reading for students and scholars throughout the social sciences and anyone interested in the contemporary legacy of his revolutionary ideas.

Book excerpt: A tired man, struggling to overcome the loss of his wife in a car accident. Two old friends, hoping to rediscover their connection on a trip to the woods. A screenwriter hoping to hear news about the future of his film. In Jon Raymond's deft, nuanced stories, these and other characters contend with the frustrations, longings, and mood swings we face every day. Artfully conveying the feeling of lived experience, these stories brim with gratifying sensory detail: the sound of a tree root snapping underfoot, the smell of a roast, the stillness of the air after music has stopped. And, with careful observations and a humane spirit, Livability gives us a portrait of America full of characters finding ways to survive their own choices. Published to coincide with the national release of Wendy and Lucy, these refined, elegiac stories are the work of a writer with a long and promising career ahead of him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An imaginative retelling of London’s history, framed through the experiences of Indigenous travelers who came to the city over the course of more than five centuries London is famed both as the ancient center of a former empire and as a modern metropolis of bewildering complexity and diversity. In Indigenous London, historian Coll Thrush offers an imaginative vision of the city's past crafted from an almost entirely new perspective: that of Indigenous children, women, and men who traveled there, willingly or otherwise, from territories that became Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, beginning in the sixteenth century. They included captives and diplomats, missionaries and shamans, poets and performers. Some, like the Powhatan noblewoman Pocahontas, are familiar; others, like an Odawa boy held as a prisoner of war, have almost been lost to history. In drawing together their stories and their diverse experiences with a changing urban culture, Thrush also illustrates how London learned to be a global, imperial city and how Indigenous people were central to that process.
