Book excerpt: A Hard Row to Hoe is a narrative novel that stems from the memoirs of its main character, Ree, born in 1941. The story is based on her recollections from the around the age of four years old to the end of the decade. The story gives a concise view of the time, history, and southern setting in which the story unfolds. The story tells of how Ree slowly learns about life under the watchful eyes of her mother, doting grandmother, and their profound religious teachings. Although shes inquisitive, the excessively protective nature of her parents and grandmother always kept her curiosities at bay. However, despite their concerns, this rather sickly, quiet, and curious child senses theres more to life and utilizes every given opportunity to learn about people outside her secluded world. Sheltered in a world of blackness, she realizes her skin is black, and shes very happy being black because everybody she knows in her little world is kindhearted and nonjudgmental. It was only when she finally ventures out into the greater society that she realizes what it means to be a little black child in America. Shockingly, her aspirations temporarily floundered when she faced the harsh reality that not all people accepted her blackness. Ree learns life can be hard and very painful and that it incorporates many different kinds of painmost devastatingly, the pain of rejection. By the storys end, she has become so resolute it dulled the pain of an unaccepting world. Assuredly, she knows the moral teachings of her mother and grandmother would always be there to help her overcome the stigmas that have been attached to black skin. It is said: theres nothing new under the sun. Subsequently, everything that goes around comes around. Moral principles that have spanned the decades are embedded within the lines of events, which will provide many teachable moments, just as its gripping conclusion will provide timeless answers to age-old problems.

The Routledge Sourcebook of Religion and the American Civil War collects these sources into a single convenient volume, the most comprehensive collection of primary source material on religion and the Civil War ever brought together. With chapters organized both chronologically and thematically, and highlighting the experiences of soldiers, women, African Americans, chaplains, clergy, and civilians, this sourcebook provides a rich array of resources for scholars and students that highlights how religion was woven throughout the events of the war. Sources collected here include: • Sermons • Song lyrics • Newspaper articles • Letters • Diary entries • Poetry • Excerpts from books and memoirs • Artwork and photographs Introductions by the editor accompany each chapter and individual document, contextualizing the sources and showing how they relate to the overall picture of religion and the war. Beginning students of American history and seasoned scholars of the Civil War alike will greatly benefit from having easy access to the full texts of original documents that illustrate the vital role of religion in the country’s most critical conflict.

Download or read book The Sounds of Slavery written by Shane White and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploration of African American slavery through sound is a groundbreaking way of understanding both slave culture and American history "A work of great originality and insight." -Ira Berlin "Shane White and Graham White's book is a joy." -Branford Marsalis "A fascinating book . . . that brings to life the historical soundscape of 18th- and 19th-century African Americans at work, play, rest, and prayer . . . This remarkable achievement demands a place in every collection on African American and U.S. history and folklife. Highly recommended." -Library Journal "The authors have undertaken the difficult task of bringing to contemporary readers the sounds of American slave culture . . . [giving] vibrancy and texture to a complex history that has been long neglected." -Booklist "The book's strongest point is its attention to detail . . . [it] will not only be valuable to young scholars, but . . . to young performers and composers, especially with the explosion of interest in 'roots music,' looking for new sources of original and searing music." -Ran Blake, Christian Science Monitor "A lyrical and original treatment of the musical and spoken culture of American slaves. This book is moving testimony to how scholarship can penetrate the transcendent spirit once considered exotic or unknowable, how historians can trace social survival to the human voice in slavery's heart of darkness." -David W. Blight, professor of history, Yale University, and author of Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory "A seminal study of a neglected aspect of Southern and African-American culture . . . and the approach to the topic is both creative and resourceful. The book is highly recommended." -Michael Russert, The Multicultural Review Shane White and Graham White, who are not related, are professor and honorary associate, respectively, in the history department at the University of Sydney, Australia. They are the coauthors of Stylin': African American Expressive Culture, from Its Beginning to the Zoot Suit.
