In the developed world, academics and practitioners explore food quality using a supply chain perspective. In transitional economies, such as China, this perspective is largely unexplored. This book addresses food quality and firm performance improvements through supply chain integration and quality management in China’s pork processing industry. Data were collected from Chinese pork processing firms. This book shows the relationship between quality management practices and firm performance. Factors that influence firm performance include in-company quality management, supplier/customer quality management, employee involvement and integrated governance mechanisms. This book is a valuable resource for practitioners of meat processing enterprises, as well as academic researchers with an interest in the areas of agri-food supply chain governance, quality management and firm performance in transitional economies.

Book excerpt: Challenges faced by supply chains appear to be growing exponentially under the demands of increasingly complex business environments confronting the decision makers. The world we live in now operates under interconnected economies that put extra pressure on supply chains to fulfil ever-demanding customer preferences. Relative attractiveness of manufacturing as well as consumption locations changes very rapidly, which in consequence alters the economies of large scale production. Coupled with the recent economic swings, supply chains in every country are obliged to survive with substantially squeezed margins. In this book, we tried to compile a selection of papers focusing on a wide range of problems in the supply chain domain. Each chapter offers important insights into understanding these problems as well as approaches to attaining effective solutions.

Book excerpt: The managed flow of goods and information from raw material to final sale also known as a "supply chain" affects everythingâ€"from the U.S. gross domestic product to where you can buy your jeans. The nature of a company's supply chain has a significant effect on its success or failureâ€"as in the success of Dell Computer's make-to-order system and the failure of General Motor's vertical integration during the 1998 United Auto Workers strike. Supply Chain Integration looks at this crucial component of business at a time when product design, manufacture, and delivery are changing radically and globally. This book explores the benefits of continuously improving the relationship between the firm, its suppliers, and its customers to ensure the highest added value. This book identifies the state-of-the-art developments that contribute to the success of vertical tiers of suppliers and relates these developments to the capabilities that small and medium-sized manufacturers must have to be viable participants in this system. Strategies for attaining these capabilities through manufacturing extension centers and other technical assistance providers at the national, state, and local level are suggested. This book identifies action steps for small and medium-sized manufacturersâ€"the "seed corn" of business start-up and developmentâ€"to improve supply chain management. The book examines supply chain models from consultant firms, universities, manufacturers, and associations. Topics include the roles of suppliers and other supply chain participants, the rise of outsourcing, the importance of information management, the natural tension between buyer and seller, sources of assistance to small and medium-sized firms, and a host of other issues. Supply Chain Integration will be of interest to industry policymakers, economists, researchers, business leaders, and forward-thinking executives.

This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During the last decade, sector wide crises in agriculture have rapidly followed each other, resulting in serious consumer concerns about the quality and safety of agri-food products. To prevent new crises, governments have developed quality regulations and retailers have introduced quality management standards. However, concerns have been raised about the administrative burdens placed on firms, because they must comply with many private and public quality regulations. Therefore, both government and firms strive for more integration and self regulation of quality management systems. By combining managerial and economic theory, this study builds a framework to demonstrate the impact of integrated quality management on self regulation and performance. Using empirical evidence from the poultry meat, the fruit and vegetable and the flower and potted plant chains, this study shows that integrated quality management systems positively affect performance and self regulation. However, it is necessary to find committed partners that share the firm’s quality objectives. In most cases, too strict enforcement of quality requirements is destructive, initiates conflict and does not lead to higher performance. Furthermore, governmental agencies should focus on innovative approaches to assure quality. Not legislation, but factors such as media attention and corporate social responsibility enlarge the integration of quality management systems. This book is recommended for a broad audience of professionals, practitioners and policy makers who concern themselves with the design, management and assessment of quality management and self regulation in agri-food supply chains."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New JIT, New Management Technology Principle contains the previously published, updated, and new works of renowned scientist, scholar, and consultant Kakuro Amasaka. This book details the Just-in-Time (JIT) quality management strategy, exploring the cutting edge of a new management technology principle that surpasses what traditional JIT has accomplished. The new JIT principle contains hardware and software systems, and next-generation technical principles for transforming management technology into management strategy. This comprehensive work covers traditional JIT, innovation and evolution, the full new JIT and its applications, along with case studies. It is clearly impossible to lead the next generation by merely maintaining the two Toyota management technology principles, Toyota Production System and Total Quality Management. To overcome this issue, it is essential to renovate not only TPS, which is the core principle of the production process, but also establish core principles for marketing, design and development, production, and other departments. This book reassesses the way management technology was carried out in the manufacturing industry and establishes new JIT. This next-generation management technology model is the JIT system for not only manufacturing, but also for customer relations, sales and marketing, product planning, research and development (R&D), product design, production engineering, logistics, procurement, and administration and management for enhancing business process innovation and introduction of new concepts and procedures. The book focuses on the theory and application of strategic management technology through the application of new JIT, then demonstrates its effectiveness in a case study based on an advanced car manufacturer. Using this new model, you can realize manufacturing that places top priority on customers with a good Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD) in a rapidly changing technical environment, and allows you to create uniform quality for the global market.

Book excerpt: Research on Just in Time (JIT), Total Quality Management (TQM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM),Supply Chain Management (SCM), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) generally investigate the implementation and impact of these programs in isolation. However, none of these paradigms is self sufficient and may not be powerful enough to deliver the improvements and innovations that are required nowadays to insure the survival and growth of a firm. They are not mutually exclusive and inconsistent. On the contrary, they need complementary support and may reinforce mutually to make use of their complementarily, inducement of side effects in favor of other paradigm's, mutual simulation and exploitation of shared values. More researchers have begun to discuss the importance of synergistic approaches by understanding the joint implementation and effect on manufacturing programs.

Book excerpt: Proven Solutions for Improving Supply Chain Performance is a collection of about 175 descriptions of scientific management studies in the management of supply chains. Each one of the descriptions of the scientific studies is presented in readable and understandable form for individuals who probably have not had the statistical and scientific education and training to fully understand the underlying studies. The book is significantly different from the popular management literature, which is generally based on “armchair” theories that have little basis on fact, and seldom have been scientifically verified. Although the book is targeted for the supply chain manager/administrator, it can also be used as a supplementary reader in such courses as Operations Management, Service Systems Management, Manufacturing Management, Purchasing Management, and, of course, in Supply Chain Management courses.
