Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creep and fatigue are the most prevalent causes of rupture insuperalloys, which are important materials for industrial usage,e.g. in engines and turbine blades in aerospace or in energyproducing industries. As temperature increases, atom mobilitybecomes appreciable, affecting a number of metal and alloyproperties. It is thus vital to find new characterization methodsthat allow an understanding of the fundamental physics of creep inthese materials as well as in pure metals. Here, the author shows how new in situ X-ray investigations andtransmission electron microscope studies lead to novel explanationsof high-temperature deformation and creep in pure metals, solidsolutions and superalloys. This unique approach is the first tofind unequivocal and quantitative expressions for the macroscopicdeformation rate by means of three groups of parameters:substructural characteristics, physical material constants andexternal conditions. Creep strength of the studied up-to-date single crystal superalloysis greatly increased over conventional polycrystalline superalloys. From the contents: - Macroscopic characteristics of strain at high temperatures - Experimental equipment and technique of in situ X-rayinvestigations - Experimental data and structural parameters in deformedmetals - Subboundaries as dislocation sources and obstacles - The physical mechanism of creep and the quantitative structuralmodel - Simulation of the parameters evolution - System of differential equations - High-temperature deformation of industrial superalloys - Single crystals of superalloys - Effect of composition, orientation and temperature onproperties - Creep of some refractory metals For materials scientists, solid state physicists, solid statechemists, researchers and practitioners from industry sectorsincluding metallurgical, mechanical, chemical and structuralengineers.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to typify the extent to which contract farming is helping small farmers to access markets and meet increasingly stringent requirements, not only of "modern" food manufacturers, retailers, exporters and food service firms,by also in non-food sectors such as biofuels and forestry. It also seeks to clarify differences in the functionality of contracts depending on commodity, market, technology, public policies and country circumstances. Conceptual issues are discussed and a series of case study appraisals based on real world examples from developing regions are presented. The issuesraised by the case study authors and the key messages synthesized in the initial book chapter bring new insights and contributions to further enrich knowledge on contract farming as a tool for inclusive market access in development countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interconnections between world politics and non-human nature to overcome the anthropocentric boundaries that characterize the field of international relations. By gathering contributions from various perspectives, ranging from post-humanism and ecological modernization, to new materialism and post-colonialism, it conceptualizes the embeddedness of world politics in non-human nature, and proposes a reorientation of political practice to better address the challenges posed by climate change and the deterioration of the Earth’s ecosystems. The book is divided into two main parts, the first of which addresses new ways of theoretically conceiving the relationship between non-human nature and world politics. In turn, the second presents empirical investigations into specific case studies, including studies on state actors and international organizations and bodies. Given its scope and the new perspectives it shares, this edited volume represents a uniquely valuable contribution to the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles a collection of case studies analysing drivers of and responses to change amongst contemporary hunter-gatherers. Contemporary hunter-gatherers’ livelihoods are examined from perspectives ranging from historical legacy to environmental change, and from changes in national economic, political and legal systems to more broad-scale and universal notions of globalization and acculturation. Far from the commonly held romantic view that hunter-gatherers continue to exist as isolated populations living a traditional lifestyle in harmony with the environment, contemporary hunter-gatherers – like many rural communities around the world - face a number of relatively new ecological and social challenges to which they are pressed to adapt. Contemporary hunter-gatherer societies are increasingly and rapidly being affected by Global Changes, related both to biophysical Earth systems (i.e., changes in climate, biodiversity and natural resources, and water availability), and to social systems (i.e. demographic transitions, sedentarisation, integration into the market economy, and all the socio-cultural change that these and other factors trigger). Chapter 10 of this book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the anthropological field initially shied away from the debate on multiculturalism, it has been widely discussed within the fields of political theory, social policy, cultural studies and law. Beyond Multiculturalism is the first volume of its kind to offer a comparative, worldwide view of multiculturalism, considering both traditional multicultural/multiethnic societies and those where cultural pluralism is relatively new. Its varied case studies focus on the intersections and relationships between cultural groups in everyday life using employment, identity, consumption, language, legislation and policy making to show the unique contribution anthropologists can bring to multiculturalism studies. Their work will be of great interest to scholars of race, ethnicity, migration, urban studies and social and cultural geography.
