Book excerpt: The school violence events that occurred in the 2006-2007 school year and the March 2007 shooting tragedy in Germany have renewed concerns about schools all across the country. The need, therefore, for a book on planning and implementing school safety measures would seem to be vital at this point in time. Reeves, Kanan, and Plog have created just such a guide, providing important information that can help prevent incidents of school violence for all educators involved in crisis prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The emphasis the authors place on the connection between physical safety efforts and psychological safety efforts make this work even more valuable.

This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullying. Gang assaults. Rampage shootings. School violence, especially when it turns deadly, has enduring social and psychological effects on students, faculty, staff, and the community. And though a great deal of research focuses on the significant role children’s positive social development plays in reducing incidents of school violence, in-depth examinations of evidence-based preventive measures have remained minimal until now. With its focus on averting lethal school violence, this unique volume translates the prosocial findings into practicable preventive measures that can be put to use in school settings. Making expert use of news reports as well as scholarly data, Preventing Lethal School Violence clarifies the links between bullying and lethal violence and delineates typical characteristics of school shooters while cautioning against outright profiling. Students’ awareness of self and others, strong connections with adults, and other social and ethical skills form the basis of a comprehensive, research-based model for reducing—and potentially eliminating—lethal incidents at school. This accessible volume: Outlines the scope of school violence as a broader social problem. Summarizes current information on the traits common to students who commit lethal violence at school. Examines the relationship between bullying/cyberbullying and rampage incidents. Analyzes examples of successful prevention of violent acts and resolution of hostage situations. Describes in detail the concept of positive school climate and introduces the Safe School Communities Model. Synthesizes key research data into violence prevention skills for students, teachers, administrators, and all professionals working in schools. Preventing Lethal School Violence is a must-have resource for researchers and professionals in school psychology and allied education disciplines, including school administration, school counseling, and social work.

Book excerpt: This forward-looking monograph distills the current knowledge base on lethal school shootings for school professionals invested in improving school safety. Divided between correlates, interventions, and prevention, it begins with the Virginia Tech massacre as exemplifying the kinds of personal, environmental and social dynamics that commonly result in lethal violence on campus. Bullying as a causal factor in school violence is a specific focus of the findings, including immediate and long-term negative effects, psychology of bullies and victims and issues related to cyber bullying. And specialized chapters provide details on Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for victimized children and youth, treatment possibilities for bullies and an empirically-supported program for preventing further lethal events. Featured in this reference: Case study: Cho Seung-Hui. Correlates of school violence: bullying, psychopathy, ethnic and gender issues and more. Anti-bullying interventions. Treatment of traumatized children. Averted school shootings and resolved school hostage events. The Safe Schools Communities Model for violence prevention. For professionals working in and with schools in various capacities, optimizing safety is a top priority. Violence in Schools gives those readers clear direction toward achieving this crucial goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far too often, children and youth experience trauma, from rare events such as mass shootings, terrorism attacks, and school lockdowns, to very common occurrences such as bullying, exposure to drugs and alcohol, or various mental health issues. They can experience these events both directly and indirectly (from surfing the internet, watching television, or through their friends). Our children spend a large portion of their day at school interacting with other students, teachers, and school personnel, where these topics are raised and discussed. This edited volume addresses how our teachers and school personnel can help students deal with these potentially traumatic events to reach the most positive possible outcomes. This collection brings together leading experts, including academics and professionals working in the field, to provide the most current evidence-based practices on how to help students who may have experienced or witnessed trauma. It presents research and advice on how to respond to traumatic events regarding bullying; drugs and alcohol; sexual abuse; mental health; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) safety; stranger danger; childhood disruptive behaviors; school shootings and lockdowns; and terrorism. It also includes a chapter focused on how to implement a school safety program. Schools cannot deal with these issues alone; effective strategies must engage family members and the broader community. Hence, the collection includes a chapter on how schools can partner with families and the communities they reside in to bring about positive change. All this work pays close attention to cultural and religious sensitivity, socio-economic variabilities, diversity issues, and developmental stages.

Book excerpt: This workbook presents a seven-step planning process for safe and effective schools. Though specifically directed to schools in California, most of the components of the plan will pertain to schools everywhere. The workbook contains requirements of the California Education Code; many work sheets, sample forms, summary sheets, checklists, rubrics, matrices, and definitions; and an action plan for each of the seven steps. The seven steps in the planning process are as follows: (1) Identify your safe-school planning committee members; (2) create a vision of your school as a place where students are safe to learn, and base that vision on youth development; (3) gather and analyze data; (4) identify strengths and areas of desired change, and set major annual goals for each of the two safe-school components; (5) select and implement strategies; (6) communicate the safety plan to the public, hold public meetings for input, and keep the updated plan available for public inspection; and (7) evaluate your progress, revise the plan annually, and include the plan in your school accountability report card. Book excerpt: Ways in which school leaders can establish "safe schools" are detailed in this guide book. It offers suggestions on how to involve students, parents, law enforcement officials, business and community leaders, and other concerned citizens. This resource guide is designed to help administrators accomplish five goals: (1) assess the school climate by identifying top safety issues; (2) determine safe-school goals; (3) develop a plan for reaching safe-school goals; (4) build a support network for policy development and plan implementation; and (5) maintain a system of continuing evaluation. The guide reviews factors that affect school safety and suggests getting started by creating a planning team. A special section addresses how to conduct a school-site assessment, focusing on what to do before the assessment begins; how to gather pertinent data; how to track and monitor school crime; and how to make campuses safer through good environmental design and sensible management and maintenance. The guide suggests that the law is at the heart of safe-school planning, and it defines the guiding parameters of what must be done. Two appendices provide model assessment questionnaires and list sample plans, policies, procedures, and codes. (RJM)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crises affect schools across the country every day. While natural hazards such as tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes may be thought of more commonly as emergencies, schools are also at risk from other hazards such as school violence, infectious disease, and terrorist threats. Through the vulnerability assessment process, schools can take steps to prevent, mitigate, and lessen the potential impact of these risks by developing customized district and school emergency management plans in collaboration with community partners. Vulnerability assessments are integral to, rather than separate from, the ongoing emergency management activities of school districts and schools. This guide is intended to be a companion piece to "Practical Information on Crisis Planning: A Guide for Schools and Communities", originally published by the U.S. Department of Education in 2003 as a guide for schools and districts to prepare for a variety of crises. This guide emphasizes a valuable part of emergency management planning--ongoing vulnerability assessment--and is intended to assist schools with the implementation of an effective vulnerability assessment process, to include choosing an appropriate vulnerability assessment tool. Vulnerability assessment tools may vary from one school site to another, depending on variables such as: location, environment, size, and structure, and even student population and school culture. For example, schools may be located in urban or rural environments, may have limited or greater resources, or may have specific populations with their own unique needs. As a result, vulnerability assessments must be customized on an individual district and school basis, taking all of these factors into consideration. This guide is intended to describe the key elements to be considered when selecting an assessment tool appropriate for school environments and provide guidance for conducting an assessment that will inform school emergency management activities. Appendices include: (1) Additional Resources; (2) Vulnerability Assessment Focus Group Participants; (3) State Policy Requirements for K-12 School Safety and Security Assessments; and (4) Assessment Example. (Contains 1 figure, 1 table and 5 footnotes.) [For the companion report, "Practical Information on Crisis Planning: A Guide For Schools and Communities", see ED.].
