Book excerpt: In The Transatlantic Gaze, Mary Ann McDonald Carolan documents the sustained and profound artistic impact of Italian directors, actors, and screenwriters on American film. Working across a variety of genres, including neorealism, comedy, the Western, and the art film, Carolan explores how and why American directors from Woody Allen to Quentin Tarantino have adapted certain Italian trademark techniques and motifs. Allen's To Rome with Love (2012), for example, is an homage to the genius of Italian filmmakers, and to Federico Fellini in particular, whose Lo sceicco bianco/The White Sheik (1952) also resonates with Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) as well as with Neil LaBute's Nurse Betty (2000). Tarantino's Kill Bill saga (2003, 2004) plays off elements of Sergio Leone's spaghetti Western C'era una volta il West/Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), a transatlantic conversation about the Western that continues in Tarantino's Oscar-winning Django Unchained (2012). Lee Daniels's Precious (2009) and Spike Lee's Miracle at St. Anna (2008), meanwhile, demonstrate that the neorealism of Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica, which arose from the political and economic exigencies of postwar Italy, is an effective vehicle for critiquing social issues such as poverty and racism in a contemporary American context. The book concludes with an examination of American remakes of popular Italian films, a comparison that offers insight into the similarities and differences between the two cultures and the transformations in genre, both subtle and obvious, that underlie this form of cross-cultural exchange.

Book excerpt: This book examines how Italian Americans have been represented in cinema, from the depiction of Italian migration in New Orleans in the 1890s (Vendetta) to the transition from first- to second-generation immigrants (Ask the Dust), and from the establishment of the stereotype of the Italian American gangster (Little Caesar, Scarface) to its re-definition (Mean Streets), along with a peculiar depiction of Italian American masculinity (Marty, Raging Bull). For many years, Italian migration studies in the United States have commented on the way cinema contributed to the creation of an identifiable Italian American identity. More recently, scholars have recognized the existence of a more nuanced plurality of Italian American identities that reflects social and historical elements, class backgrounds, and the relationship with other ethnic minorities. The second part of the book challenges the most common stereotypes of Italian Americanness: food (Big Night) and Mafia, deconstructing the criminal tropes that have contributed to shaping the perception of Italian-American mafiosi in The Funeral, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, and the first two chapters of the Godfather trilogy. It views this vibrant scenario from a cross-cultural perspective, and investigates the domains of national identities and stereotypes, advertising and social media, TV series, myths and festivals, landscapes, culture-bound terms, migrating words, and food. More specifically, some chapters revolve around issues of intra-/inter-group identities in the context of itineraries of recent or historical migrations, and how such variegated identities are re-shaped by and through the media, in a dynamic interplay of symbols and clichés. In the same vein, gender issues are also addressed in a dimension suspended between tradition and modernity, with a special focus on Turkish women. The multi-dimensional Turkish culture and landscape are also voiced through an example of blended American/Turkish children’s literature. Other chapters explore the language of tourism in the diverse multimodal representations and textualizations of the tourist experience in Mediterranean destinations, mainly expressed through social media. The contemporary appreciation of the Mediterranean Diet as a global cultural heritage is also explored through the magnifying lens of such media. Given the variety of perspectives and methodological approaches adopted by the contributors, this volume offers useful insights to students and practitioners of discourse analysis alike. From an educational perspective, the book, which also includes practical worksheets, can be used in first- and second-level degrees in Foreign Languages, Communication, Political Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies, as well as specific courses in linguistics, multimodal studies, critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. The underlying rationale of the book is its concentration on the prominent role of English in representing the Mediterranean heritage, despite the fact that it is a non-Mediterranean language.
