Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In It's About Time, N. David Mermin asserts that relativity ought to be an important part of everyone's education--after all, it is largely about time, a subject with which all are familiar. The book reveals that some of our most intuitive notions about time are shockingly wrong, and that the real nature of time discovered by Einstein can be rigorously explained without advanced mathematics. This readable exposition of the nature of time as addressed in Einstein's theory of relativity is accessible to anyone who remembers a little high school algebra and elementary plane geometry. The book evolved as Mermin taught the subject to diverse groups of undergraduates at Cornell University, none of them science majors, over three and a half decades. Mermin's approach is imaginative, yet accurate and complete. Clear, lively, and informal, the book will appeal to intellectually curious readers of all kinds, including even professional physicists, who will be intrigued by its highly original approach.

Book excerpt: In the decade since the publication of Rajan Suri’s landmark book, Quick Response Manufacturing, the innovative principles of QRM have been proven with impressive results at many companies, big and small, in a variety of industries. While the key principles of QRM remain unchanged, after a decade of teaching QRM workshops to senior executives, Suri has developed a clear, concise, and accessible method of presenting QRM strategy using four core concepts: 1. The Power of Time – the huge impact time has on your entire enterprise 2. Organization Structure – how to structure your organization to reduce lead times 3. System Dynamics – understanding how interactions between jobs and resources impact time to make better decisions on capacity, lot sizes, and similar issues 4. Enterprise-Wide Application – QRM is not just a shop floor strategy, it extends across your whole enterprise including material planning and control, supply management, office operations, and new product introduction Presenting new case studies on QRM implementation, It's About Time: The Competitive Advantage of Quick Response Manufacturing illustrates how QRM can not only reduce lead times but also improve quality, reduce operating costs, and enable companies to gain substantial market share. This practical reference explains how factories in advanced nations can use QRM strategy to compete with manufacturers in low-wage countries. In addition, it provides helpful pointers for QRM implementation, including accounting strategies, novel cost-justification approaches, and a stepwise process for implementation. Also included are downloadable resources with five appendices that provide a number of practical details to assist in the success of your QRM implementation. When you are ready to start implementing QRM, you will find that these appendices contain time-saving tips to help you work through implementation issues¿including simple calculation methods and tools to support the design of your QRM strategy. You can also access these Appendices on the Downloads and updates tab on https://www.crcpress.com/9781439805961. The author, Rajan Suri, recently became one of only 10 people to be inducted into Industry Week's 2010 Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

Book excerpt: Discover the eternal value of your finite time—and intentionally choose the meaningful over the urgent every single day. Our culture makes it so that even the most organized and efficient among us feels the pressure of the ticking clock and the possibility and regret of missing out. Modern life has evolved in a way that sets us up for stress, pressure, and overload. New norms and attitudes tap into deeply-wired psychological impulses that make it harder than ever to take control of your time. Many of us also have innate personality traits that make the struggle even worse. No wonder time can become a tyrant that leaves us chronically stressed and discontented. Unlock an approach to life that bestselling author Valorie Burton calls “living timelessly.” You will come to understand 1) the gradual changes that have led us to a place where having too much to do and too little time to do it is the norm, 2) the vision for what it could look like if you were free from the stress of time and how to blast through the obstacles to those possibilities, and 3) the practical steps to choosing the meaningful over the urgent so that your life is unhurried yet purposeful and reflects the values and impact that are unique to you. It’s About Time helps you reimagine a life that is meaningful, at a pace that is natural, with a load that is doable and equips you with the tools to make it happen.

Book excerpt: A central issue of cognitive studies of text production is What goes on in people's minds when they produce a text?, How do they plan the text?, How do they decide in what order to express their thoughts? In this volume, writers are followed in their footsteps during the moment-to-moment process of producing routine business letters. Their writing processes are explored in real time with the ultimate goal to contribute to a cognitive theory of text production. Such a theory should tell what kind of mental structures underly text production, how these structures are converted into coherent texts, and how this process is framed within real writing time. The study starts from a large corpus of real-life text production processes. It combines methods to explore both process and product of text production. Processes are described by analyzing the pause patterns that emerge in the course of writing. Products are described by analyzing their hierarchical structure. Together, these descriptions yield several significant insights in the real time organization of cognitive processes in production. The study can be characterized as a cognitive linguistic approach to text production. This volume will be of special interest to researchers in the field of (psycho-)linguistics, textlinguistics and cognitive science.

Book excerpt: It's About Time represents author Bill Pearcy's attempt to reconcile Christian theology with a more modern understanding of the universe. The slim volume represents a relatively sophisticated counterpoint to the idea that religious faith is antagonistic to scientific thinking. Among the challenges he tackles are: squaring divine creation with the Big Bang; the compatibility of God's omnipotence with human free will; and reconciling eternal life with our understanding of the laws of the universe. He manages each topic with careful thought and clear articulation. His approach to free will, for example, shares fruitful similarities with philosophers such as Immanuel Kant, drawing important distinctions between the world as we experience it and the universe as it is in itself, as God must experience it. Not every discussion is as successful; his examination of God's omnipotence is less adequate, ignoring critics who would claim that being all-powerful contains inherent contradictions. He has not written a comparative theology, but devoted nearly all his attention to core Christian beliefs. It's About Time is not likely to convert many to a theology they don't already share with the author, nor does it try to. Instead it provides insight into how one person can square belief in a modern scientific worldview with faith in the central tenets of Christianity. -Blueink Review

Book excerpt: How do two-career couples manage in a one-career world? It's about Time examines this mismatch between outdated scripts and the experiences of dual-earner couples. It broadens our understanding of occupational and family career strategies couples use in light of the widening gap between their real lives and the outdated work-hour and career-path roles, rules, and regulations they confront. It's about Time draws on the data from the Cornell Couples and Careers Study to demonstrate that:*Regardless of income, time is a scarce commodity in dual-earner households. With two jobs, two commutes, often long work hours, high job demands, business travel, several cars, children, ailing relatives, and/or pets - time is always an issue.*Time is built into jobs and career paths in ways that make continuous full-time (40 or typically more hours a week) paid work a fact of life in American society. *The multiple strands of life—career, family and personal—unfold over time. Spouses move through their life courses in tandem, with early choices - to have children or not, to work long hours or not, to switch jobs or not, to relocate for his or her career or not—all having long-term consequences for life quality and for gender inequality. The evidence from this book suggests that it is about time for the United States to confront the realities and needs of contemporary working couples and indeed, all members of the new workforce. To do so requires more than Band-Aid, short-term (and often short-sighted) policy remedies. It's about Time argues that it is essential to re-imagine and reconfigure work hours, workweeks, and occupational career paths in ways that address the widening gaps between the time needs and goals of workers and their families, at all ages and stages of the life course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning reporter Carolyn Castleberry brings workable solutions to help women discover and apply the right strategies for time management in their lives, freeing them to invest themselves in what really matters. American women are in a time crisis. There's just not enough time. They are doing more but enjoying it less. Fueled by both internal and external pressures, they run from task to task without pausing to ask themselves, "Do I really want to do all this stuff? Why can't I get a handle on managing my time?" How can they find true time balance in their supercharged, over-scheduled lives? Carolyn Castleberry, anchor and co-host of Living the Life on ABC's Family Channel, has not only asked herself these questions, but she has interviewed countless accomplished newsmakers over the years. Determined to bring workable solutions to women, she commissioned a national survey on women and time. Roughly half of those surveyed feel busier than they did five years ago (50%), don't feel there's enough time to get everything done (45%), and say they don't have enough time for themselves (43%). One in three women (34%) described themselves as overwhelmed. This book delivers proven, effective strategies for time management. First, it offers women a chance to take a self-test to see where they fall on the "time-balance scale," a tool to assist the reader in diagnosing her time management style in order to apply the right strategies and biblical principles to fit her needs. Castleberry describes five major groups of women when it comes to time management: the Overwhelmed, the Procrastinators, the Pressured, the Self-Stressed, and the Balanced. Once diagnosed, readers discover the unique factors standing in their way of effectiveness. They explore the time traps that need to be avoided -- those habits, decisions, and disempowering thoughts and words that literally steal time. Then with smart biblical strategies in place, readers will discover how to select their true priorities and invest their talents, careers, and selves in living to do what really matters.
