This book was released on 1994-09-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We test the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth in a cross-country regression framework, utilizing data on FDI flows from industrial countries to 69 developing countries over the last two decades. Our results suggest that FDI is an important vehicle for the transfer of technology, contributing relatively more to growth than domestic investment. However, the higher productivity of FDI holds only when the host country has a minimum threshold stock of human capital. In addition, FDI has the effect of increasing total investment in the economy more than one for one, which suggests the predominance of complementarity effects with domestic firms.

This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an engine of economic development for developing countries, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows have contributed for creation of technology transfer to local firms and managerial know-how; have had positive effects on exports and access to external markets. It is also argued that FDI will contribute to economic growth and hence generate more jobs. Driven by this, the government of Tanzania has attempted to attract FDI in the 1990s by offering generous incentives to achieve this target. This book, therefore, provides a new insights into the fields of economics and international business. The employment effect of FDI and gross domestic product (GDP) in Tanzania for the period 1990 to 2008 is analyzed empirically using SPSS. The analysis should help shed some light into FDI and economic growth and their impact on employment creation in Tanzania, and should be especially useful to multinational corporations in developed and developing countries. It is also likely to be of interest to policy makers and development practitioners in government, non-government organizations and in the the donor community.

Book excerpt: Nigeria has the potential to become Sub-Saharan Africa's largest economy because of its rich human and natural resources. These vast natural resources qualify Nigeria to be a major recipient of foreign direct Investment. Foreign Direct Investment in turn is believed to be an engine of economic development in that it brings about the transfer of technology, managerial skills, international production, access to markets, etc. A number of studies have been conducted on the Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth, with most of those studies focusing on cross-country studies. Yet, results about the relationship between foreign direct investment and economic growth come with varying outcomes. This Bachelor's thesis focused exclusively on Nigeria with a view to analysing the role foreign direct investment has played on economic growth in Nigeria since independence. This thesis concludes by making important recommendations that are particularly useful to investors who want to invest in Nigeria; academicians interested in studies of FDI-growth linkage; and to policymakers to adopt some measures to further strengthen and improve investment environment in Nigeria.

Download or read book The Global Race for Foreign Direct Investment written by Lars Oxelheim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment (FDI) has become the prime engine to foster growth and to facilitate the restructuring and internationalization of formerly sheltered areas during the 1980s. This book deals with future prospects for FDI and provides answers to some critical questions at the beginning of the 1990s: Will the unprecedented high rate of growth of FDI in the 1980s continue for the rest of the twentieth century and beyond? If so, which will be the major recipient countries, source countries and sectors involved in these transactions? The general approach of each chapter is to review the factors that prompted the expansion of FDI during the 1980s. Their value as driving forces in the future is then assessed together with some new factors. The book contains nine chapters. The first four deal with general issues such as: Will the restrictions on capital flows be reimposed? What are the prospects for the world economy? Which ingredients will shape the global competition for investment? What are the likely patterns of FDI to emerge in the next decade? The remaining five chapters are devoted to special issues such as: How will increased instability in the financial system influence trade and FDI? What role in future FDI will merger and acquisition (M&A) activities play? What influence will the emerging market economies have on the global distribution of FDI? Will the Japanese continue to be the major foreign direct investors in the future? Will FDI from small and medium-sized firms gain momentum as they become more exposed to international competition and as their customers get increasingly involved in FDI?
