Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvesting and Drying Rough Rice in California Because of the alkaline soils and other unfavorable conditions, a large part of the acreage devoted to rice production is suitable for_no other purpose. Rice is naturally resistant to small amounts of alkali, and the large amounts of fresh water used for irrigation keep the alkaline salts washed out. Because alkali is hygroscopic in nature also, an excess interferes with the drainage of the fields at maturity and thus delays harvesting operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Irrigation Districts in California: For the Year 1930 The data contained in this report have been assembled by the office of the State Engineer, Division of Water Resources, Department of Public Works. from information furnished by the irrigation districts of the State. This information has been analyzed and checked, and while it is believed to be substantially correct and reliable, there may be minor inaccuracies in individual cases. Three earlier reports have been published on this subject, giving complete information of irrigation districts and the irrigation district movement in California up to and including 1929. These earlier reports are presented in Bulletin 2 (1916) of the State Department of Engineering, Bulletin 21 (1929) of the Department of Engineering and Irrigation and Bulletin 21-A (1930) of Division of Water Resources. The present report is published for the purpose of continuing this series of bulletins and bringing up to date historical and statistical data on California irrigation districts, and recording such other information as was obtained on irrigation district activities in 1930. It is desired to express the appreciation of this office for the cooperation of district officials. Through their generally prompt response to our requests for information, we have been able to prepare for publication the irrigation district bulletin for 1930 three months earlier in the year than was possible for the 1929 report. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation in the Sacramento Valley, California In making a study of the irrigation conditions and possibilities of a drainage basin nearly one-half as large as the State of Illinois, it was found impossible to cover the entire area in a thorough man ner. Besides, such a course did not seem necessary. It was thought possible to present with a fair degree of accuracy conditions as they exist throughout the entire area by making detailed studies of a few representative localities and examining in a more general way the remainder of the territory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drainage in the Sacramento Valley Rice Fields The necessity for adequate drainage in the rice growing areas of California is quite fully appreciated by all who are associated with the industry and considerable attention has been given to the drainage of these lands in the Sacramento Valley, with the result that several drainage and reclamation districts have been organized and many miles of drains constructed. Several of these have been in operation for sufficient time to justify some conclusions as to their efficiency in providing the required relief and the making of some suggestions regarding-future work. In any general paper on drainage of rice lands a more comprehensive understanding of the situation can be obtained by the presentation of data on some of the interrelations between soils, irrigation, cultural methods and social and financial economics.
