Since many of the notices in the Journal make no mention of relationships but give useful clues to where people lived in Ireland, Mr. Schlegel has gathered those references into a separate appendix. All told, this fully indexed publication identifies some 2,000 Irish men and women. This book should be especially useful to those interested in tracing 18th-century Scotch-Irish ancestors, since the largest proportion of emigrants from Ireland prior to the American Revolution came from Northern Ireland, embarking as so many of them did from the port of Londonderry.

In the earliest days of publication, what little genealogical material is found in the paper comes chiefly from advertisements for runaway servants or Negro and Indian slaves.In time, however, a steady stream of genealogical data--mainly marriages and deaths--began to appear. Most of the marriage entries pertained to persons of some distinction, such as governors, judges, government officials, clergymen, and eminent merchants, as well as their family members. In the case of death notices, the age of the deceased was noted, sometimes with a brief sketch of his career and with an indication of his place of birth, ancestry, and relatives. Many of the genealogical items were concerned with persons in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina, and New England, as well as Pennsylvania. The index lists 3,400 names of persons who would otherwise have been relegated to obscurity.

Book excerpt: Catholics were restricted from owning property, voting and other civil rights during the 1700's. Some of them renounced their religion, converting to the Church of Ireland in order to enjoy such rights. Besides taking the sacrament in the Church of Ireland, they were required to file a certificate in a court of law. These Convert ceritficates were kept in the Chancery Court Rolls Office until 1867, at which time they were transferred to the Public Records Office. The actual rolls were destroyed by the fire in 1922, but they had been calendared and recorded.
