Book excerpt: Investigation of ionospheric phenomena over large areas of the world has been pursued by Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories since 1953 by means of ionospheric sounders carried in large aircraft. Technical details of the first airborne ionospheric sounding system utilizing a modified C-3A Automatic Ionosphere Recorder in a JKC-97 aircraft, are described briefly. Emphasis is given to the limitations and special considerations connected with an airborne ionospheric sounder such as adequate antenna, types of interference, power, effects of temperature and vibration, and peculiarities of airborne data. Mutual operation with other projects on the aircraft conducting various photometric measurements, is discussed in regard to the severe rf interference produced by the ionospheric sounder. (Author).

Book Synopsis Report on Peru Scintillation Tests by : H. E. Whitney
Download or read book Report on Peru Scintillation Tests written by H. E. Whitney and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large scale test program was developed jointly by AFGL and AFAL to evaluate the effects of equatorial ionospheric irregularities on UHF (250 MHz) satellite communications to map the temporal and spatial extent of the equatorial scintillation region, and to determine the geophysical mechanisms leading to the formation of irregularities in the equatorial ionosphere and thus to scintillations. Of specific interest were scintillation characteristics and effects observed by airborne terminals and their relation to simultaneously obtained results from ground based terminals. The test results are based on radio propagation and geophysical measurements conducted from ground and airborne stations and show the general scintillation patterns, latitudinal dependence, heading dependence and signal statistics. Backscatter measurements from the Jicamarca radar and optical observations from the all sky imaging photometer show the development and motion of the irregularity structure. Scintillation plots for several satellites received at the ground stations and on the aircraft are included. (Author).

Book Synopsis Arctic Ionosphere and Aurora by : J. Buchau

Book excerpt: In response to Air Force needs for specifying and forecasting conditions of the Arctic ionosphere, AFCRL's Airborne Ionospheric Laboratory, a highly instrumented NKC 135 jet aircraft, was used in an extensive Arctic research program that started in 1967. To date, 69 flights were made and ionospheric and optical data covering major parts of the auroral oval, mainly the midday sector and the night sector, were collected. During the winter months of 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970 special emphasis was put on the investigation of the day sector. These flights covered a rather unique and poorly investigated area of the auroral oval, and a detailed report on the observations is given here. A thorough analysis of the data collected in the day sector reveals the existence of a band of continuous particle precipitation south of the location of the discrete aurora. This precipitation hardens towards the south and results in E- and D-region ionization. These observations compare very well with measurements of precipitating particles done by satellite. The investigation of the evening and night sectors showed similar but less organized trends than on the day side. During several flights the continuity of the auroral oval was verified. The investigation indicates that, with additional measurements, it may be possible to develop a model of the Arctic ionosphere. With control measurements from a few ideally located ground stations, the dynamics of the Arctic ionosphere might then be utilized for forecasting propagation conditions in the Arctic. (Author).

Book Synopsis Upper Atmosphere Research Using Aircraft by : George J. Gassmann
Download or read book Upper Atmosphere Research Using Aircraft written by George J. Gassmann and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An existing airborne installation is described and its potentialities are outlined. The particular properties of a jet aircraft (movability, speed, altitude) combined with appropriate ionospheric sounding equipment (receivers, optical apparatus, magnetometer, and cosmic ray recorders) constitute a unique capability. After reviewing past results obtained from more limited airborne equipment, an outline of operations and objectives is given, pertaining to: Magnetic Shell Propagation, Arctic Radio Physics, Eclipse Effects, Dumping of Trapped Electrons, Equatorial Electrojet, Nuclear Detonation Effects, Ionospheric Drifts, Airglow and Cosmic Ray Surveys. Book Synopsis Observation of the Earth and Its Environment by : Herbert J. Kramer
Download or read book Observation of the Earth and Its Environment written by Herbert J. Kramer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 1531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about spaceborne missions and instruments. In addition, surveys of airborne missions and of campaigns can be found on the accompanying CD-ROM in pdf-format. Compared with the 3rd edition the spaceborne part grew from about 300 to 1000 pages. The complete text - including the electronic-only chapters - contains more than 1900 pages. New chapters treat the history of Earth observation and university missions. The number of commercial Earth imaging missions has grown significantly. A chapter contains reference data and definitions. Extensive appendices provide a comprehensive glossary, acronyms and abbreviations and an index of sensors. An effort has been made to present the information in context, to point out relationships and interconnections. The book may serve as a reference and guide to all involved in the various national and international space programs: researchers and managers, service providers and data users, teachers and students.
