Book excerpt: An advanced system for measurement of transionospheric radio propagation effects was developed, utilizing the TI-4100 four-channel Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. During AFGL's Polar ARCS campaign at Sondrestrom, Greenland in February-March 1987, the system successfully measured ionospheric total electron content (TEC), phase scintillation, and amplitude scintillation on both GPS carrier frequencies, from up to four satellites simultaneously. This was the first time it has been possible to measure these parameters simultaneously, in multiple directions, in the high-latitude regions. Coupled with the simultaneous optical and incoherent scatter radar diagnostics obtained during the Polar ARCS campaign, these measurements significantly improve our capability to characterize high latitude ionospheric structures, particularly their temporal and spatial variation. Additionally, the development of this advanced system has contributed significantly to the technology base for specification of the Transionospheric Sensing System (TISS) for the Air Weather Service. The system can also be software upgraded to perform special navigation in addition to ionospheric measurements in airborne applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ionosphere produces several effects upon radio waves that must travel through it. For radio waves such as those that propagate to and from satellites used for communication or navigation purposes, and for ranging to space objects from satellite detection and tracking radars, the effects of the ionosphere may be important depending upon the system operating frequency and the state of the ionosphere at the time. In this report the various effects that the ionosphere has upon radio waves which must traverse it are discussed and the main characteristics of the ionosphere, which are important to systems design engineers and others who must consider the effects of the ionosphere upon space systems, are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space weather has an enormous influence on modern telecommunication systems even though we may not always appreciate it. We shall endeavor throughout this monograph to expose the relationships between space weather factors and the performance (or lack thereof) of telecommunication, navigation, and surveillance systems. Space weather is a rather new term, having found an oMicial expression as the result of several government initiatives that use the term in the title of programs. But it is the logical consequence of the realization that space also has weather, just as the lower atmosphere has weather. While the weather in space will influence space systems that operate in that special environment, it is also true that space weather will influence systems that we understand and use here on terra firma. This brings space weather home as it were. It is not some abstract topic of interest to scientists alone; it is a topic of concern to all of us. I hope to make this clear as the book unfolds. Why have I written this book? First of all, I love the topic. While at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), I had the opportunity to do research on many topics including: Thomson scatter radar and satellite beacon studies of the ionosphere, utilization of the NASA Gemini platform for ionospheric investigations, microwave radar propagation studies, I-IF signal intercept and direction-finding experiments, and multi-disciplinary studies of certain physical phenomena relevant to weapon systems development.

Book excerpt: This is a compilation of seventeen (17) papers presented by the Space Physics Division at the 1978 Symposium on the Effect of the Ionosphere on Space and Terrestrial Systems. The symposium was jointly sponsored by the Naval Research Laboratory and the Office of Naval Research, January 24-26, 1978. The emphasis is on the occurrence of ionospheric irregularities and their effect on communication, radar and navigation systems.

Book excerpt: The accurate design of earth–space systems requires a comprehensive understanding of the various propagation media and phenomena that differ depending on frequencies and types of applications. The choice of the relevant channel models is crucial in the design process and constitutes a key step in performance evaluation and testing of earth–space systems. The subject of this book is built around the two characteristic cases of satellite systems: fixed satellites and mobile satellite systems. Radio Wave Propagation and Channel Modeling for Earth–Space Systems discusses the state of the art in channel modeling and characterization of next-generation fixed multiple-antennas and mobile satellite systems, as well as propagation phenomena and fade mitigation techniques. The frequencies of interest range from 100 MHz to 100 GHz (from VHF to W band), whereas the use of optical free-space communications is envisaged. Examining recent research advances in space-time tropospheric propagation fields and optical satellite communication channel models, the book covers land mobile multiple antennas satellite- issues and relative propagation campaigns and stratospheric channel models for various applications and frequencies. It also presents research and well-accepted satellite community results for land mobile satellite and tropospheric attenuation time-series single link and field synthesizers. The book examines aeronautical communications channel characteristics and modeling, relative radio wave propagation campaigns, and stratospheric channel model for various applications and frequencies. Propagation effects on satellite navigation systems and the corresponding models are also covered.
