Book excerpt: The report embodies the results of continuous measurements of ionospheric electron content and scintillations obtained for the first time with a geostationary satellite over the Indian subcontinent. The observations near the crest of the equatorial anomaly indicate the importance of plasma transport in the equatorial ionosphere. Solar and geomagnetic controls also show some interesting features. It has been observed that though the occurrence of scintillation is very low, there may be cases of intense scintillations even at a frequency of 136 MHz. Scintillation in this region has been found to be induced by both E and F regions. (Author).

Book excerpt: The low latitude ionosphere has a special character of its own owing to a strong control of geomagnetic field over the topside ionosphere. In order to explore the extent of this control, studies on total electron content and irregularities of electron concentration in the ionosphere were carried out at Haringhata Field Station (22 degree 58 minutes N, 88 degrees 30 minutes E). The investigation on electron content were mainly oriented towards the determination of its latitude variation under varying geomagnetic conditions while those on the irregularities sought to obtain their axial ratio and spatial distribution. Book excerpt: During the last week of September 1968, ESRIN (the European Space Research Institute) held the ESRIN-ESLAB Symposium on 'Low-Frequency Waves and Irregularities in the Ionosphere' in Frascati, near Rome. The symposium was attended by about 60 participants, including speakers from most of the ESRO member states, the U.S.A., the U.S.S.R., and Peru. The main topics covered were: (a) observations of ionospheric irregularities by radar scattering, (b) scintillations of satellite signals, (c) geomagnetic micropulsations, and (d) whistlers. Both theoretical and observational aspects were treated. In addition, laboratory results on low-frequency waves in plasmas were discussed, emphasis being given to their possible relevance to low-frequency ionospheric phenomena. Finally, a brief presentation (not included in these proceedings) of the ESRO rocket and satellite program was given by Dr. Pedersen of ESLAB. The symposium provided an exchange of information among workers in closely related fields. It was also valuable in bringing together people whose experience is predominantly in ionospheric observations with others whose field of interest is mainly in plasma physics (theoretical or laboratory) - a combination that seemed particularly appropriate to ESRIN's program and functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F-region irregularities near the equator are viewed from the concept of the temporal structure of UHF scintillations and the electron content depletions associated with VHF, UHF and GHz scintillations. Near the equatorial anomaly crest, the solar cycle effect on GHz scintillation and the depolarization of VHF satellite signals are probed along with electron density irregularities using in-situ data coupled with VHF/GHJz scintillation. Occurrence of nighttime VHF scintillation in the Indian sector near the anomaly is addressed. In the midlatitude sector, coordinated incoherent scatter radar, total electron content and scintillation measurements are studied in the investigation of the generation of km-scale irregularities which spatial variability of total electron content is analyzed in the Mediterranean region. At high latitudes, in-situ measurements provide the opportunity for scintillation modelling which low-energy electron precipitation measurements have been correlated with scintillations/TEC in the auroral oval. The nature of ionospheric irregularities generated by high-power, high-frequency heating has also been investigated and shown to vary between two sites studied.

This book consists of four parts. Part 1 introduces mathematical techniques that are required for the analysis of telecommunication systems. The physical environment of telecommunications and basic principles such as the teletraffic theory, electromagnetic waves, optics and vision, ionosphere and troposphere, and signals and noise are described in Part 2. Part 3 covers the political and regulatory environment of the telecommunications industry, telecommunication standards, open system interconnect reference model, multiple access techniques, and network management. The last part deliberates telecommunication applications that includes synchronous digital hierarchy, asynchronous transfer mode, integrated services digital network, switching systems, centrex, and call management. This publication is intended for practicing engineers, and as a supplementary text for undergraduate courses in telecommunications.

Book excerpt: The participation of such diverse scientific and technical disciplines as meteorology, astronomy, atmospheric electricity, ionospheric and magnetospheric physics, electromagnetic wave propagation, and radio techniques in the research of atmospherics means that results are published in scientific papers widely spread throughout the literature. This Handbook collects the latest knowledge on atmospherics and presents it in two volumes. Each chapter is written by an expert in his or her field. Topics include the physics of thunderclouds, thunder, global atmospheric electric currents, biological aspects of sferics, and various space techniques for detecting lightning within our own atmosphere as well as in the atmospheres of other planets. Up-to-date applications and methodology are detailed. Volumes I and II offer a comprehensive discussion that together will serve as an important resource for practitioners, professionals, and students alike.
