Book excerpt: This monograph presents results of the analytical and numerical modeling of convective heat and mass transfer in different rotating flows caused by (i) system rotation, (ii) swirl flows due to swirl generators, and (iii) surface curvature in turns and bends. Volume forces (i.e. centrifugal and Coriolis forces), which influence the flow pattern, emerge in all of these rotating flows. The main part of this work deals with rotating flows caused by system rotation, which includes several rotating-disk configurations and straight pipes rotating about a parallel axis. Swirl flows are studied in some of the configurations mentioned above. Curvilinear flows are investigated in different geometries of two-pass ribbed and smooth channels with 180° bends. The author demonstrates that the complex phenomena of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotating flows can be successfully simulated using not only the universal CFD methodology, but in certain cases by means of the integral methods, self-similar and analytical solutions. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of heat and mass transfer.

Book excerpt: This Handbook provides researchers, faculty, design engineers in industrial R&D, and practicing engineers in the field concise treatments of advanced and more-recently established topics in thermal science and engineering, with an important emphasis on micro- and nanosystems, not covered in earlier references on applied thermal science, heat transfer or relevant aspects of mechanical/chemical engineering. Major sections address new developments in heat transfer, transport phenomena, single- and multiphase flows with energy transfer, thermal-bioengineering, thermal radiation, combined mode heat transfer, coupled heat and mass transfer, and energy systems. Energy transport at the macro-scale and micro/nano-scales is also included. The internationally recognized team of authors adopt a consistent and systematic approach and writing style, including ample cross reference among topics, offering readers a user-friendly knowledgebase greater than the sum of its parts, perfect for frequent consultation. The Handbook of Thermal Science and Engineering is ideal for academic and professional readers in the traditional and emerging areas of mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, bioengineering, electronics fabrication, energy, and manufacturing concerned with the influence thermal phenomena.

Book excerpt: In the second edition of this well known Textbook, a full chapter on the finite volume method has been added a technique that combines the benefits of finite differences and finite elements. Specifically, it is applicable to three dimensional unsteady flows in complex geometrie. It uses structured collocated grids, the grids themselves can be orthogonal or non-orthogonal. Extension of the finite volume technique to compressible fluids as well as turbulent flows is possible.

Book excerpt: Applications of Nanofluid for Heat Transfer Enhancement explores recent progress in computational fluid dynamic and nonlinear science and its applications to nanofluid flow and heat transfer. The opening chapters explain governing equations and then move on to discussions of free and forced convection heat transfers of nanofluids. Next, the effect of nanofluid in the presence of an electric field, magnetic field, and thermal radiation are investigated, with final sections devoted to nanofluid flow in porous media and application of nanofluid for solidification. The models discussed in the book have applications in various fields, including mathematics, physics, information science, biology, medicine, engineering, nanotechnology, and materials science. - Presents the latest information on nanofluid free and force convection heat transfer, of nanofluid in the presence of thermal radiation, and nanofluid in the presence of an electric field - Provides an understanding of the fundamentals in new numerical and analytical methods - Includes codes for each modeling method discussed, along with advice on how to best apply them

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physical mechanisms that drive counterflows, examining how they emerge, develop, become double and multiple counterflows and comprise both global and local circulations. Counterflows play an important role in nature and technology. A natural example is the Gulf Stream and the opposite flow in the ocean depths. Technological applications include hydrocyclones, vortex tubes and vortex combustors. These elongated counterflows are wildly turbulent but survive intense mixing, a seeming paradox. Local counterflows, whose spatial extent is small compared with that of surrounding flows, occur behind bluff bodies and in swirling streams. The latter are often referred to as vortex breakdown bubbles, which occur in tornadoes and above delta wings. Most scale counterflows are cosmic bipolar jets. Most miniature counterflows occur in capillary menisci of electrosprays and fuel atomisers.
