Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking Lebedev Physics Institute as follows: Previous research carried out under the ISTC partner contracts has demonstrated that an electric discharge could be a powerful means for producing highly excited CO molecules needed for overtone CO lasers, for producing electrically excited oxygen and for obtaining iodine atoms via iodine dissociation, which can be extremely useful for the development of the electrically assisted oxygen-iodine laser. Therefore, the Project will be aimed at improving understanding of three main problems tightly related to each other: the experimental and theoretical study of the kinetics of highly excited CO molecules in an E-beam and RF discharge, which is extremely important for development of efficient overtone CO laser (including the supersonic CO laser); the experimental and theoretical study of singlet-delta oxygen (SDO) kinetics in E-beam and DC discharges, which is important for efficient SDO production and development of an electrically-assisted oxygen-iodine laser; the experimental and theoretical study of the kinetics of atomic iodine production in vortex flow DC discharges, which is important for the improvement of chemical oxygen-iodine lasers. The research team proposed for this project consists of experts from the Gas Laser Lab and Chemical Lasers Lab of the Quantum Radiophysics Institute of the Lebedev Physics Institute in Moscow and the Samara Branch of the Lebedev Institute. The research team has extensive experience in the field of experimental and theoretical fundamental research on kinetic processes taking place in the active media of different electric discharge and chemical lasers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combined analytical and experimental investigation of rapidly expanded CO2 laser mixtures is described. Study of the vibrational kinetics indicates that population inversions with high vibrational energy density can be produced at high pressures by utilizing low (starved) concentrations of CO2. Scaling laws for predicting the gain of starved systems are developed. A description is given of gain measurements carried out using a CO2 laser to probe the flow in a nozzle at the point where the Mach number is approximately four. Population inversions at static pressures as high as about one atmosphere have been observed and found to be in reasonable agreement with predictions. (Author).

This book examines the spectroscopic detection of single atoms and explores the purification of industrial chemicals. Organized into seven chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the methods developed for laser detection of single atoms, including fluorescence, photoionization, photodeflection, and their combinations. This text then discusses the methods of high resolution spectroscopy, which provide detailed information on molecular structure and reaction kinetics studies. Other chapters review several laser photodissociation studies, which explain dissociation dynamics. This book discusses as well the possibilities for selective photochemical reactions and examines the potential of lasers for practical application in chemical processing. The final chapter considers the various metals that can undergo a photochemical change in oxidation state in ordinary solvents. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, chemists, electrochemists, photochemists, electrical engineers, and chemical engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental investigations are presented of laser kinetics related to the use of combustion product gases in CO2 laser systems. Several processes for producing the laser gas are also considered. The sensitivity of laser performance to gas composition and to level of impurities is considered theoretically. The role of CO and the appropriate fractions of H2 and H2O are examined. Maximum allowable amounts of impurities (O2, hydrocarbons, water vapor and particulates) are determined. The laser output was measured for a variety of gases related to possible combustion product gas mixtures. Some actual combustion product mixtures were tested as well. The measured laser performance generally agreed well with prediction, with the exception of CO-containing gases where a 15 - 25 percent discrepancy for 12 percent CO was found. No unexpected problems due to impurities were found when using the actual combustion product gas. The generation method and gas properties of the combustion product gas generated at Avco-Lycoming are presented. Various gas turbine cycles for generating the laser gas were studied. Three gas production systems are considered, open- and closed-cycle operation using stored gas (the gas being generated prior to a laser run) and open-cycle operation using on-line gas generation (the laser gas being generated during the laser run). The gas storage, open-cycle system has the disadvantage of a limited duty cycle (here taken to be 50:1), but is otherwise found to be far superior in terms of weight and volume, as well as cost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model of the CO2 laser system is developed. Each vibrational mode in the system is assumed to reach internal equilibrium rapidly, permitting description of the system by six temperatures (CO2 nu1, nu2, and nu3, N2, CO, and kinetic). The various excitation and transfer processes exchanging energy between these modes are discussed and a summary of available data on the relevant process rates has been collected. The six differential equations corresponding to the six vibrational temperatures are solved numerically and the laser flux and gain calculated as function of time. This model is applied to the prediction of behavior in pulsed lasers and amplifiers. The predictions of gain and laser output are compared with experiments performed on different lasers at AERL, at both atmospheric and 1/10 atmospheric pressure. Gain and laser output measurements have been performed on the laser Humdinger Junior at temperatures near 200K, as well as near 300K. Less conventional gas mixtures have been investigated theoretically and experimentally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biofuels are classified as renewable because the carbon present in the vegetable oil or animal fat feedstocks originates from carbon dioxide already present in the atmosphere. One of the current focuses on biofuel-based combustion research is the design of advanced energy conversion devices using complex reaction mechanisms. The development of these mechanisms requires a large experimental database to ensure accuracy of computational predictions. Infrared laser-absorption diagnostics are widely used in combustion research for fast, sensitive, and non-intrusive measurements of species concentration, temperature, and pressure. This thesis explores three new areas of laser diagnostic research: (a) mid-infrared diagnostics, (b) sensing in multiphase flows, and (c) applications to shock tube chemical kinetics. A novel distributed-feedback quantum-cascade laser (DFB-QCL) near 4.7 um was investigated to develop a new mid-infrared absorption sensor for in situ measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) and temperature in combustion gases. The laser provides convenient access to the stronger vibrational bands of CO than was possible previously, enabling ppm-level detectivity with an optical path length of 10 cm at high temperatures between 1000-2000 K. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy with 1f-normalized 2f detection (WMS-2f/1f) of CO2 was developed for accurate temperature sensing in multiphase combustion flows. In this method, two tunable diode lasers with wavelengths near 2.7 um were used to measure time-varying gas temperature during the evaporation of shock-heated fuel aerosols. These recently developed mid-IR laser absorption diagnostics were then applied in studying the thermal decomposition of oxygenates (biofuel surrogates) by measuring species concentration time-histories behind reflected shock waves. In a particular study of methyl formate (the simplest biodiesel surrogate), the reaction rate constants of methyl formate unimolecular decomposition were measured using the mid-IR CO absorption behind reflected shock waves. Detailed comparisons of the measured methanol and CO time-histories with the model predictions were made. Sensitivity and reaction pathway analyses for these oxygenated fuel components were performed, leading to rate recommendations with improved model performance.

Book excerpt: Lasers with a gaseous active medium offer high flexibility, wide tunability, and advantages in cost, beam quality, and power scalability. Gas lasers have tended to become overshadowed by the recent popularity and proliferation of semiconductor lasers. As a result of this shift in focus, details on modern developments in gas lasers are difficult to find. In addition, different types of gas lasers have unique properties that are not well-described in other references. Collecting expert contributions from authorities dealing with specific types of lasers, Gas Lasers examines the fundamentals, current research, and applications of this important class of laser. It is important to understand all types of lasers, from solid-state to gaseous, before making a decision for any application. This book fills in the gaps by discussing the definition and properties of gaseous media along with its fluid dynamics, electric excitation circuits, and optical resonators. From this foundation, the discussion launches into the basic physics, characteristics, applications, and current research efforts for specific types of gas lasers: CO lasers, CO2 lasers, HF/DF lasers, excimer lasers, iodine lasers, and metal vapor lasers. The final chapter discusses miscellaneous lasers not covered in the previous chapters. Collecting hard-to-find material into a single, convenient source, Gas Lasers offers an encyclopedic survey that helps you approach new applications with a more complete inventory of laser options.

Schmitz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research contains four different research projects, the first an educational project introducing hydrogen bromide and deuterium bromide (HBr/DBr) and carbon monoxide (CO) as viable options for infrared vibration-rotation spectroscopy at 0.125 cm-1 or 0.5 cm-1 resolution in the teaching laboratory. The second project involved determining the spectral shifts of lanthanide fibers for diode-pumped alkali laser (DPAL) applications. Spectral shifts of lanthanides were determined using UV-VIS-NIR absorbance spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). The third project entailed computing Ar* atomic energy levels and the potential energy curves of Ar*+He laser systems arising from 3p54s1 and 3p54p1 Ar* electronic configurations using ab initio theory. The final project of this research determined rate coefficients and the equilibrium constant of the formation of nitrosyl bromide (BrNO) using relaxation kinetics. Integrated solution of the relaxation rate equation and third-order integrated rate law methodologies produced final values of kf = 1.50(6) x 10-5 torr-2s-1, kr = 5.8(8) x 10-5 torr-1s-1, and Keq = 0.26(3) torr-1, agreeing with literature within uncertainty.
