Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2009 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, , language: English, abstract: Inverse heat conduction problems occur in many theoretical and practical applications where it is difficult or practically impossible to measure the heat flux generated and the temperature of the layer conducting the heat flux to the body. Thus it becomes imperative to devise some means to cater for such a problem and estimate the heat flux inversely. Adaptive state estimator is one such technique which works by incorporating the semi-Markovian concept into a Bayesian estimation technique thereby developing an inverse input and state estimator consisting of a bank of parallel adaptively weighted Kalman filters. The problem presented in this study deals with a three dimensional system of a cube with one end conducting heat flux and all the other sides are insulated while the temperatures are measured on the accessible faces of the cube. The measurements taken on these accessible faces are fed into the estimation algorithm and the input heat flux and the temperature distribution at each point in the system is calculated. A variety of input heat flux scenarios have been examined to underwrite the robustness of the estimation algorithm and hence insure its usability in practical applications. These include sinusoidal input flux, a combination of rectangular, linearly changing and sinusoidal input flux and finally a step changing input flux. The estimator’s performance limitations have been examined in these input set-ups and error associated with each set-up is compared to conclude the realistic application of the estimation algorithm in such scenarios. Different sensor arrangements, that is different sensor numbers and their locations are also examined to impress upon the importance of number of measurements and their location i.e. close or farther from the input area. Since practically it is both economically and physically tedious to install more number of measurement sensors, hence optimized number and location is very important to determine for making the study more application oriented. Before the inverse estimation, a comprehensive mesh sensitivity analysis is given for the system’s governing equation finite difference calculations to get an optimized mesh size for the forward and inverse analysis to be correct and within the tolerable error limits and computationally undemanding at the same time.

Book excerpt: This monograph is based on the author's studies carried out to investigate one of the most promising trends in the theory of ill-posed problems, namely, iterative regularization and its application to inverse heat transfer problems. Effective methods for solving inverse problems have allowed researchers to simplify experiments considerably, and to increase the accuracy and confidence of results in experimental data processing. The authors discuss a broad range of problems concerned with both the theory of regularizing gradient algorithms and peculiarities of their application to the most often encountered inverse problems of reconstruction of external heat fluxes and the identification of mathematical models for heat transfer processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph presents a systematic treatment of the theory of the propagation of transient electromagnetic fields (such as optical pulses) through dielectric media which exhibit both dispersion a.nd absorption. The work divides naturally into two parts. Part I presents a summary of the fundamental theory of the radiation and propagation of rather general electromagnetic waves in causal, linear media which are homogeneous and isotropic but which otherwise have rather general dispersive and absorbing properties. In Part II, we specialize to the propagation of a plane, transient electromagnetic field in a homogeneous dielectric. Although we have made some contributions to the fundamental theory given in Part I, most of the results of our own research appear in Part II. The purpose of the theory presented in Part II is to predict and to explain in explicit detail the dynamics of the field after it has propagated far enough through the medium to be in the mature-dispersion regime. It is the subject of a classic theory, based on the research conducted by A. Sommerfeld and L.

Book excerpt: Inverse Heat Conduction A comprehensive reference on the field of inverse heat conduction problems (IHCPs), now including advanced topics, numerous practical examples, and downloadable MATLAB codes. The First Edition of the classic book Inverse Heat Conduction: III-Posed Problems, published in 1985, has been used as one of the primary references for researchers and professionals working on IHCPs due to its comprehensive scope and dedication to the topic. The Second Edition of the book is a largely revised version of the First Edition with several all-new chapters and significant enhancement of the previous material. Over the past 30 years, the authors of this Second Edition have collaborated on research projects that form the basis for this book, which can serve as an effective textbook for graduate students and as a reliable reference book for professionals. Examples and problems throughout the text reinforce concepts presented. The Second Edition continues emphasis from the First Edition on linear heat conduction problems with revised presentation of Stolz, Function Specification, and Tikhonov Regularization methods, and expands coverage to include Conjugate Gradient Methods and the Singular Value Decomposition method. The Filter Matrix concept is explained and embraced throughout the presentation and allows any of these solution techniques to be represented in a simple explicit linear form. Two direct approaches suitable for non-linear problems, the Adjoint Method and Kalman Filtering, are presented, as well as an adaptation of the Filter Matrix approach applicable to non-linear heat conduction problems. In the Second Edition of Inverse Heat Conduction: III-Posed Problems, readers will find: A comprehensive literature review of IHCP applications in various fields of engineering Exact solutions to several fundamental problems for direct heat conduction problems, the concept of the computational analytical solution, and approximate solution methods for discrete time steps using superposition of exact solutions which form the basis for the IHCP solutions in the text IHCP solution methods and comparison of many of these approaches through a common suite of test problems Filter matrix form of IHCP solution methods and discussion of using filter-form Tikhonov regularization for solving complex IHCPs in multi-layer domain with temperature-dependent material properties Methods and criteria for selection of the optimal degree of regularization in solution of IHCPs Application of the filter concept for solving two-dimensional transient IHCP problems with multiple unknown heat fluxes Estimating the heat transfer coefficient, h, for lumped capacitance body and bodies with temperature gradients Bias in temperature measurements in the IHCP and correcting for temperature measurement bias Inverse Heat Conduction is a must-have resource on the topic for mechanical, aerospace, chemical, biomedical, or metallurgical engineers who are active in the design and analysis of thermal systems within the fields of manufacturing, aerospace, medical, defense, and instrumentation, as well as researchers in the areas of thermal science and computational heat transfer.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the errors introduced when one-dimensional inverse heat conduction techniques are applied to problems involving two-dimensional heat transfer effects was performed. The geometry used for the study was a cylinder with similar dimensions as a typical container used for the transportation of radioactive materials. The finite element analysis code MSC P/Thermal was used to generate synthetic test data that was then used as input for an inverse heat conduction code. Four different problems were considered including one with uniform flux around the outer surface of the cylinder and three with non-uniform flux applied over 360°, 180°, and 90° sections of the outer surface of the cylinder. The Sandia One-Dimensional Direct and Inverse Thermal (SODDIT) code was used to estimate the surface heat flux of all four cases. The error analysis was performed by comparing the results from SODDIT and the heat flux calculated based on the temperature results obtained from P/Thermal. Results showed an increase in error of the surface heat flux estimates as the applied heat became more localized. For the uniform case, SODDIT provided heat flux estimates with a maximum error of 0.5% whereas for the non-uniform cases, the maximum errors were found to be about 3%, 7%, and 18% for the 360°, 180°, and 90° cases, respectively.

Book excerpt: Real-time heat flux measurement has great significance in numerous applications such as metal heat treating, quenching, fire safety tests, furnace operation, thermal therapy and more. Direct measurement of heat flux is not always possible and therefore, developing methods for accurate heat flux estimation using temperature data is desirable for several applications. An Inverse Heat Conduction Problem (IHCP) has to be solved to estimate the unknown heat flux at the surface, knowing the temperature measurements in the interior points of the medium. This problem is mathematically ill-posed and a small error in temperature data result in large errors in estimated heat fluxes. The focus of this dissertation is developing solutions for IHCP's using digital filter approach. A series of IHCP's are closely investigated and filter based solutions are developed for each problem which allows real-time heat flux estimation. The characteristics of the filter form solutions are discussed in detail for each case. A series of articles are written to discuss these problems. The articles in this dissertation provide real-time solutions for a series of IHCP's with wide applications in industries. In particular, a filter based solution technique is developed for heat flux estimation in multi-layer mediums with temperature dependent material properties. While one application of this solution technique in using Directional Flame Thermometers is discussed in detail, there are many other applications for this solution method, e.g. in thermal therapy and tissue engineering (Articles 1-5). Furthermore, the concept of using artificial neural networks as digital filters for real-time heat flux estimation is investigated in Article 6. Several test cases are demonstrated to study the applicability of ANN's for solving linear and non-linear IHCP's. Finally, developing filter form solutions for two-dimensional IHCP's with multiple unknown heat fluxes is presented in Article 7. This study not only provides a basis for heat flux estimation in heat treating processes in industries, but also proves the applicability of the filter solution for multi-dimensional mediums with more complexities and demonstrates the characteristics of this technique.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explicit non-iterative algorithm developed by Ling, et al. for inverse heat conduction problems is applied to two-dimensional rectangular and axisymmetric domains. The inverse algorithm takes advantage of the linearity between the computed temperatures and the instantaneous surface heat fluxes. The instantaneous least-squares error norm is minimized explicitly. The minimization leads to a current set of surface heat fluxes to be estimated. Exact or closed form solution to a particular two-dimensional heat conduction problem is found. This forms the basis for the inverse heat conduction problem. A finite element-based code, using the above mentioned inverse algorithm is developed for a two-dimensional geometry and the surface fluxes are predicted. Several possibilities are considered for solution stabilization and the effect of these approximations on the flux predictions are analyzed. Further, the sensitivity of the fluxes to the temperature sensor locations is also investigated. These steps are repeated for a second problem involving the axisymmetric heating of a cylinder. Based on the results for these two problems, conclusions are drawn regarding solution stability, sensor location, and corner effect.
