Book Synopsis Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications by : Cemal Basaran
Download or read book Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications written by Cemal Basaran and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition adds new sections on derivation of dynamic equilibrium equations in unified mechanics theory and solution of an example, derivation of very high cycle fatigue thermodynamic fundamental equation and application/verification with two metal fatigue examples, derivation of thermodynamic fundamental equations for metal corrosion, examples of corrosion – fatigue interaction. There is also an example of ultrasonic vibration fatigue and one traditional tension/compression loading in elastic regime. While updated and augmented throughout, the book retains its description of the mathematical formulation and proof of the unified mechanics theory (UMT), which is based on the unification of Newton’s laws and the laws of thermodynamics. It also presents formulations and experimental verifications of the theory for thermal, mechanical, electrical, corrosion, chemical and fatigue loads, and it discusses why the original universal laws of motion proposed by Isaac Newton in 1687 are incomplete. The author provides concrete examples, such as how Newton’s second law, F = ma, gives the initial acceleration of a soccer ball kicked by a player, but does not tell us how and when the ball would come to a stop. Over the course of the text, Dr. Basaran illustrates that Newtonian mechanics does not account for the thermodynamic changes happening in a system over its usable lifetime. And in this context, this book explains how to design a system to perform its intended functions safely over its usable life time and predicts the expected lifetime of the system without using empirical models, a process currently done using Newtonian mechanics and empirical degradation/failure/fatigue models which are curve-fit to test data. Written as a textbook suitable for upper-level undergraduate mechanics courses, as well as first year graduate level courses, this book is the result of over 25 years of scientific activity with the contribution of dozens of scientists from around the world.

This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been ten years since I presented the paper entitled “A new model and theory on yield and failure of materials under the complex stress state” at the Sixth Conference on Mechanical Behaviour of Materials held at Kyoto, Japan in 1991. The proceedings edited by Jono and Inoue were published by Pergamon Press in 1991. At that conference Professor Murakami and I were invited to act as the chairperson and co-chairperson of a session, and I presented the paper at another session. Few days before the conference, I had given a seminar regarding the tw- shear strength theory and the unified strength theory at Nagoya Technological University. These were the first two presentations of the unified strength theory, although I had completed the research of the unified strength theory in 1990. The paper “Twin-shear strength theory and its generalization” was published in the English edition of Sciences in China, the top journal in China, in 1985. The th original generalized twin-shear strength theory was presented at the 16 International Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Congress held at Copenhagen in Denmark and MPA (MaterialPrüfungsAnstalt) at Stuttgart University, Germany in 1984. After this Congress I visited the MPA and School of Civil Engineering of Stuttgart University, and gave a seminar regarding the generalized twin-shear strength theory at MPA of Stuttgart University. Professor Otto Mohr (1835–1918) has had worked at the Stuttgart University. He was a very good professor, his lectures aroused great interest in his students.
Book Synopsis Entropy Based Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring by : Cemal Basaran
Download or read book Entropy Based Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring written by Cemal Basaran and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally fatigue, fracture, damage mechanics are predictions are based on empirical curve fitting models based on experimental data. However, when entropy is used as the metric for degradation of the material, the modeling process becomes physics based rather than empirical modeling. Because, entropy generation in a material can be calculated from the fundamental equation of thematerial. This collection of manuscripts is about using entropy for "Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring". The theoretical paper in the collection provides the mathematical and physics framework behind the unified mechanics theory, which unifies universal laws of motion of Newton and laws of thermodynamics at ab-initio level. Unified Mechanics introduces an additional axis called, Thermodynamic State Index axis which is linearly independent from Newtonian space x, y, z and time. As a result, derivative of displacement with respect to entropy is not zero, in unified mechanics theory, as in Newtonian mechanics. Any material is treated as a thermodynamic system and fundamental equation of the material is derived. Fundamental equation defines entropy generation rate in the system. Experimental papers in the collection prove validity of using entropy as a stable metric for Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring.

Book Synopsis Continuum Damage Mechanics and Numerical Applications by : Wohua Zhang
Download or read book Continuum Damage Mechanics and Numerical Applications written by Wohua Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-19 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Continuum Damage Mechanics and Numerical Applications" presents a systematic development of the theory of Continuum Damage Mechanics and its numerical engineering applications using a unified form of the mathematical formulations in anisotropic and isotropic damage models. The theoretical framework is based on the thermodynamic theory of energy and material dissipation and is described by a set of fundamental formulations of constitutive equations of damaged materials, development equations of the damaged state, and evolution equations of micro-structures. According to concepts of damage-dissipation of the material state and effective evolution of material properties, all these advanced equations, which take nonsymmetrized effects of damage aspects into account, are developed and modified from the traditional general failure models so they are more easily applied and verified in a wide range of engineering practices by experimental testing. Dr. Wohua Zhang is a Professor at Engineering Mechanics Research Center in Zhejiang University of China. Dr. Yuanqiang Cai is a Professor at Department of Civil Engineering in Zhejiang University of China.
