Penelope Moon couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw her fiancé, Simon Decker, a man who had been languishing in a coma for months, on board a passing yacht with a man who would die within hours. When Jennifer Mabbot goes camping in the Forest of Dean for some much needed soul-searching, she had no idea her life was about to take a very drastic turn. Witnessing a strange man burying a wooden box in the middle of the night, she thought it strange but nothing overly noteworthy. Until, that is, she came home to be confronted by two men, clearly intent on hurting her for the whereabouts of the burial site. Turning to the only person she could trust—her life-long best friend, Saul Haslen—she asks for help and gets more than she could possibly bargain for. Jennifer knows Saul does some sort of Government work, but actually he is an elite member of The Agency. With danger coming from all sides and neither of them fully understanding what's happening, they must work together to uncover the truth. Before, Jennifer would have sworn she knew practically everything there was to know of Saul. But they are both learning more about each other, personally and sexually. Within that intimate knowledge lies the key to both their futures, and lasting happiness.

Book Synopsis Intimacy or Integrity by : Thomas P. Kasulis
Download or read book Intimacy or Integrity written by Thomas P. Kasulis and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2002-03-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can I know something? How can I convince someone of the rightness of my position? How does reality function? What is artistic creativity? What is the role of the state? It is well known that people from various cultures give dissimilar answers to such philosophical questions. After three decades in the cross-cultural study of ideas and values, Thomas Kasulis found that culture influences not only the answers to these questions, but often how one arrives at the answers. In generalizing cultural difference, Kasulis identifies two kinds of orientation: intimacy and integrity. Both determine how we think about relations among people and among things, and each is reasonable, effective, and consistent. Yet the two are so incompatible in their basic assumptions that they cannot successfully engage each other. Cultural difference extends beyond nations. Cultural identities crystallize in relation to religion, occupation, race, gender, class. Rather than attempt to transcend cultural difference, Kasulis urges a deeper awareness of its roots by moving beyond mere cultural relativism toward a cultural bi-orientationality that will allow us to adapt ourselves to different cultural contexts as the situation demands. Wonderfully clear and unburdened by jargon, Intimacy or Integrity is accessible to readers from a variety of perspectives and backgrounds. By analyzing the synergy between thought and culture, it increases our understanding of cultural difference and guides us in developing strategies for dealing with orientations different from our own.

Book Synopsis Preventing AIDS by : Ralph J. DiClemente
Download or read book Preventing AIDS written by Ralph J. DiClemente and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public health has a legacy of neglect regarding social and behavioral research. Too often, prompted by technical and scientific progress, we have ignored even marginalized-the vital "human element" in health thinking and prac tice. Thus, for example, while family planning programs focused on providing a choice among safe and effective contraceptive methods (a supremely worthy goal), the central issue of sexuality and sexual behavior was generally neglected. Similarly, the enormous and important efforts to develop rapid and reliable diagnostic and treatment methods for sexually transmitted diseases helped divert attention away from the crucial issues of sexual practice. In short, we seem to have difficulty addressing the fundamental behaviors-including sex, drug taking and other intoxications, and violence-that are central to the major causes of preventable morbidity, disability, and premature mortality in the world today. Our collective reluctance to examine and understand ourselves is also expressed in the oft-repeated pipedream that scientific progress will "take care of" the HIV / AIDS pandemic by delivering a preventive vaccine, an effective cure, or both. Yet even a cursory glance at the relationship between scientific/ technical progress and health shows that meeting the scientific challenges is only one step toward effective application of the vaccine or drug. It is typical, not atypical, that hepatitis B vaccine is only now becoming relatively freely available to large populations in the developing world, more than a decade after the vaccine's licensure.
Book Synopsis Measuring and Analyzing Informal Learning in the Digital Age by : Mejiuni, Olutoyin
Download or read book Measuring and Analyzing Informal Learning in the Digital Age written by Mejiuni, Olutoyin and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, learning—and the definition of education—is changing. New digital, online, and social tools have the ability to transform the classroom and engage learners like never before. In the midst of this technological revolution, it is crucial for educators and administrators to be able to gauge the impact of digital tools on learners in a variety of settings. Measuring and Analyzing Informal Learning in the Digital Age addresses the need for educators, administrators, and professionals across industries to be more attentive to the learning process outside of a traditional classroom setting. As online learning, and MOOCs in particular, become more mainstream, tracking informal learning becomes difficult despite the necessity of feedback and measurement in non-formal learning environments. Investigating some of the primary technologies being used in educational settings and how a less structured and more open learning environment can effectively motivate students and non-traditional learners, this premier reference is a crucial source of information for educators, administrators, theorists, and other professionals in the field of education.

Book Synopsis Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa by : Chika Ezeanya-Esiobu
Download or read book Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa written by Chika Ezeanya-Esiobu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a strong philosophical, theoretical and practical argument for the mainstreaming of indigenous knowledge in curricula development, and in teaching and learning across the African continent. Since the dawn of political independence in Africa, there has been an ongoing search for the kind of education that will create a class of principled and innovative citizens who are sensitive to and committed to the needs of the continent. When indigenous or environment-generated knowledge forms the basis of learning in classrooms, learners are able to immediately connect their education with their lived reality. The result is much introspection, creativity and innovation across fields, sectors and disciplines, leading to societal transformation. Drawing on several theoretical assertions, examples from a wide range of disciplines, and experiences gathered from different continents at different points in history, the book establishes that for education to trigger the necessary transformation in Africa, it should be constructed on a strong foundation of learners’ indigenous knowledge. The book presents a distinct and uncharted pathway for Africa to advance sustainably through home-grown and grassroots based ideas, leading to advances in science and technology, growth of indigenous African business and the transformation of Africans into conscious and active participants in the continent’s progress. Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa is of interest to educators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers and individuals engaged in finding sustainable and strategic solutions to regional and global advancement.

Book Synopsis Into His Presence by : Timothy L. Anderson
Download or read book Into His Presence written by Timothy L. Anderson and published by Kregel Academic. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theologically grounded treatment of what it means to be close to God Numerous Christian books aim to provide guidance on relationships with God, but few base their conclusions on a biblical theology of intimacy. In this volume, Tim Anderson develops a biblical and holistic portrait of nearness to God, exploring key themes like God's Trinitarian union, the fall, God's fatherhood, marriage imagery, suffering, and our relationship with the Holy Spirit. A concluding chapter examines contemporary Christian songs that address oneness with God and evaluates their theological messages in light of the previous chapters. Into His Presence is a helpful guide for pursuing intimacy with God and distinguishing contemporary cultural understandings of close relationships from those communicated in Scripture.
Book Synopsis Teaching as Paul Taught by : RoyCheck B. Zuck
Download or read book Teaching as Paul Taught written by RoyCheck B. Zuck and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-11-20 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though books on Paul's life and writing abound, very few works have examined the apostle's teaching techniques. In this companion to 'Teaching as Jesus Taught,' Roy Zuck probes Paul's pedagogy to discover principles for effective teaching today. According to Zuck, the apostle Paul stands as a master teacher. "Analyzing and following Paul's educational goals and strategies," Zuck writes, "can help us become better teachers of God's Word. Examining his pedagogy can acquaint us with a number of important principles and procedures in teaching." 'Teaching as Paul Taught' explores the many New Testament references to Paul's teaching as well as the historical and cultural context in which the apostle taught. Zuck carefully organizes this extensive material around fifteen key questions regarding the teaching ministry of Paul. Over twenty tables and questions for reflection at the end of each chapter aid readers in following Paul's example. The result is a comprehensive and practical handbook for everyone involved in a teaching ministry.
