Hallaq, a renowned sharia scholar, has called sharia an ‘episteme’ that suffered a ‘structural death’ following the dawn of modernity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (Hallaq 2009, 15–16). Yet, its resurgent is remarkable across a number of jurisdictional fault-lines: from Muslim-majority nations in Middle East and Southeast Asia to Muslim-minority societies in Western Europe and North America. Across these jurisdictions, the relationship between sharia and state law is central. It includes sharia-state encounters, notably in the form of (state) Islamic law, in the field of family law, which is often asserted as the ‘core’ or ‘last stronghold’ of sharia (Moors 2003, 2; Coulson 1969, 115–6), and other substantive areas of law, such as Islamic economics and Islamic philanthropy and also jinayah (Islamic penal law). Regardless of their differences in their own specific context, these areas somehow manage to secure an importance place in the modern days. It involves different loci of authority to interpret, legislate, and enforce sharia, or parts of it that not only flourish but also being challenged around the Muslim world. Equally important are implications of the increasingly unsettled authority of apparently agreed-upon substance of sharia. To contribute on these issues, we would like to invite scholars from diverse discipline including law, anthropology, and Islamic studies, working in both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority contexts, to present their works in our International Seminar on Sharia, Law, and Muslim Society (ISSLaMS).

Everyone undergoes spiritual formation either intentionally or most often unintentionally. Intentional effort is essential in building spiritual grit. At the same time, it can never be separated from the grace and good news of Jesus Christ. The lessons on spiritual formation in this book were gleaned while ministering to U.S. Marines and Sailors over almost two decades. The study completed in 2006 documents that character can be strengthened intentionally through spiritual formation groups. Since retiring from the Navy in 2007, the author has pastored a local church in Alaska. The same spiritual formation lessons learned as a chaplain with Marines and Sailors still apply as a pastor. Today he applies these same principles to shepherding the hearts of a flock in today's hostile culture, just as he did caring for warriors training for combat. Grady has been pastor of Eagle River Grace since March 2007 when he retired as a chaplain from the U.S. Navy after 26 years. In the Navy, he served tours of duty on a nuclear submarine, a cruiser, an aircraft carrier, Seabee Battalions, and with numerous U.S. Marine units, which included a combat tour in the first Gulf War. He has lived in Iceland, Spain, Korea, and Japan. He holds a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary, a Masters of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a B.S. in engineering from Texas A&M. His active, diverse ministry and travels span four decades and over 30 countries. Grady and his wife Pat are the parents of two adult children. His married son is a youth pastor in Oregon and his daughter serves with a charitable organization in California.

In that meeting, Taylor called on "people of all faiths" to "unite upon a universal two-point declaration embodying the spirit of belief in God and belief in human liberty" (Inboden 2008, 124). The political significance of this statement is clear from the context: Taylor held this meeting to gain European support for the emerging struggle between the US and the Soviet Union. While much of Truman's early Cold War policies involved military and economic might, he also hoped to build up the America's "soft power" by appealing to common religious values and identities among allies. The role of religion in Truman's diplomacy should not be a surprise to anyone who studies (or engages in) US politics. As observers since Alexis de Tocqueville have noted, religion is an essential element of America. The idea of Manifest Destiny, which guided the country's early expansion, included a belief in the providential backing of the new United States of America.
