Book Synopsis Internationalization in Vocational Education and Training by : Ly Thi Tran
Download or read book Internationalization in Vocational Education and Training written by Ly Thi Tran and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book addresses a range of aspects of internationalization in vocational education and training (VET) in different countries. It considers the impact of internationalization and student mobility on VET at the sectoral, institutional and individual levels as the sector emerges as a key tool for social and structural change in developing nations and as a flexible and entrepreneurial means of growth in developed nations. The book explores not only the effects of the neo-liberal market principle underpinning VET practices and reforms, but importantly considers internationalization as a powerful force for change in vocational education and training. As the first volume in the world that examines internationalization practices in VET, the book provides VET and international education policymakers, practitioners, researchers and educators with both conceptual knowledge and practical insights into the implementation of internationalization in VET.

Book Synopsis Innovation in University-Based Intensive English Programs by : Jason Litzenberg
Download or read book Innovation in University-Based Intensive English Programs written by Jason Litzenberg and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the past, present and future directions of innovation in US-based Intensive English Programs (IEPs), which provide international students with an immersion-style environment for learning academic English, prior to matriculating into a full-time college or university degree program. IEPs frequently serve as sites for pre-service teacher preparation, curricular experimentation and research, and yet little published work takes a critical look at the advantages and shortcomings of such programs. The chapters in this book provide a nuanced view of this microcosm of the English language teaching industry, demonstrating the various ways that IEPs have impacted and continue to influence the wider fields of Applied Linguistics and TESOL. They emphasize the unique positioning of IEPs within higher education and describe the various ways IEP practitioners can influence their host institutions and beyond.

Book Synopsis Aspects of Language Development in an Intensive English Program by : Alan Juffs
Download or read book Aspects of Language Development in an Intensive English Program written by Alan Juffs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is much in the literature on ESL development, this book is the first of its kind to track the development of specific language abilities in an Intensive English Program (IEP) longitudinally and highlights the implications of this particular study’s findings for future IEP implementation and practice and ESL and SLA research. The volume draws on many years’ worth of data from learners at an IEP at the University of Pittsburgh to explore selected aspects of language development, including lexical, grammatical, speaking, and writing abilities, in addition to placement assessment practices and student learning outcomes. A concluding chapter points to the ways in which these findings can be applied to decision making around IEP curriculum development and the future role of IEPs in higher education more broadly. With its focus on students in IEP settings and the concentration on data from students evaluated over multiple semesters, this volume offers a unique opportunity in which to examine longitudinal developmental patterns of different L1 groups on a variety of measures from the same learners and will be key reading for students and researchers in second language acquisition, English for Academic Purposes, language education, and applied linguistics.

Book Synopsis Korean Englishes in Transnational Contexts by : Christopher J. Jenks
Download or read book Korean Englishes in Transnational Contexts written by Christopher J. Jenks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 242 pages. Book excerpt: This book challenges the dominant tendency in world Englishes scholarship to rely on the ‘nation’ as a static spatial entity and reliable analytic category. Using the transnational Korean context as a case in point, the authors analyse how the practices and ideologies of the English language reflect the complex and unexpected flows of globalisation. Examining topics such as the spoken English of South Korean youth and English education in North Korea, this interdisciplinary work gathers both established and emerging scholars from a range of language-related fields to evaluate English as a dynamic and evolving language beyond purely ‘English-speaking’ countries. This edited collection will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of world Englishes, multilingualism, second language acquisition and globalisation.
Book Synopsis Serving Library Users from Asia by : John Hickok
Download or read book Serving Library Users from Asia written by John Hickok and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian populations are among some of the fastest growing cultural groups in the US. While books on serving other target groups in libraries have been published (e.g., disabled, Latino, seniors, etc.), few books on serving library users of Asian heritage have been written. Thus the timely need for this book. Rather than a generalized overview of Asians as a whole, this book has 24 separate chapters—each on 24 specific Asian countries/cultures of East, Southeast, and South Asia—with a wealth of resources for understanding, interacting with, outreaching to, and serving library users of each culture. Resources include cultural guides (both print and online), language helps (with sample library vocabulary), Asian booksellers, nationwide cultural groups, professional literature, and more. Resources and suggestions are given for all three types of libraries—public, school, and academic—making this book valuable for all librarians. The demographics of each Asian culture (numbers and distribution)—plus history of immigration and international student enrollment—is also featured. As a bonus, each chapter spotlights a US public, school, and academic library providing model outreach to Asian library users. Additionally, this book provides a detailed description and analysis of libraries in each of the 24 Asian countries. The history, development, facilities, conditions, technology, classification systems, and more—of public, school, and academic libraries—are all discussed, with detailed documentation. Country conditions influencing libraries and library use are also described: literacy levels, reading cultures, languages and writing systems, educational systems, and more. Based on the author’s 15 years of research and travels to Asia, this work is a must-have for all librarians.
Book Synopsis Neoliberalism and English Language Education Policies in the Arabian Gulf by : Osman Z. Barnawi
Download or read book Neoliberalism and English Language Education Policies in the Arabian Gulf written by Osman Z. Barnawi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the Arabian oil-rich Gulf countries have faced enormous social, political, economic, cultural, religious, ideological and epistemological upheaval. Through detailed, critical comparative investigation, Neoliberalism and English Language Education Policies in the Arabian Gulf examines the impact of such disruption on education policies in a political and economic union, consisting of six countries: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. Using data collected from a wide range of sources, this thought-provoking book documents the inner workings of neoliberalism across a strategic geographical area of the Islamic world. The book teases apart the complex issues surrounding the ways in which access to English has been envisioned, contested, and protected from being challenged among different players within and between the Gulf countries. Osman Z. Barnawi explores the intensifying ideological debates between Islamic culture and Western neoliberal values, and questions whether Islamic values and traditions have been successfully harmonised with neoliberal capitalist development strategies for nation building in the Arabian Gulf region. Neoliberalism and English Language Education Policies in the Arabian Gulf will be of interest to academics, researchers and postgraduates working in the fields of language education and, more specifically, TESOL, applied linguistics, education policy, and teacher education.

Book Synopsis America's 'Great Immigrants' by : Kaba, Amadu Jacky
Download or read book America's 'Great Immigrants' written by Kaba, Amadu Jacky and published by Adonis and Abbey Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the immense contributions that immigrants make to the greatness of the United States, especially during this period of extreme negative views of immigrants and anti-immigrant government policies. It examined the Carnegie Corporation of New York's 'Great Immigrants: the Pride of America' honorees from 2006 to 2015 and found that the 408 honorees during this period came from 87 countries and diverse professions. It also found that among the honorees are 24 Nobel Prize winners. Several of the honorees studied at Columbia University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, Princeton University, Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Cambridge, the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, and Yale University. Available data show that 122 (30 per cent) of these honorees had a total net worth of $113.4 billion. The data also show that America will not be as productive and successful as it is today without the enormous contributions of immigrants. The data equally show that immigrants are among the most important employers and taxpayers in the United States.
Book Synopsis The Article II Mandate by : Matthew P. Goodman
Download or read book The Article II Mandate written by Matthew P. Goodman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To explore opportunities for greater economic cooperation between the United States and Japan in third countries, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington and the Asia Pacific Initiative (API) in Tokyo embarked on a joint research project using a case-study approach to examine four countries (Myanmar, Vietnam, India, and South Korea) and two institutional arrangements (regional trade architecture and the G7) where the United States and Japan have aligned interests. We found that shared interests and goals of the United States and Japan transcend today’s bilateral trade tensions, and despite China’s growing influence and assertive behavior there nevertheless remains a strong demand in the region for U.S. and Japanese leadership. Washington and Tokyo should therefore work to better coordinate their economic engagement in the region.
